Hey Mortske, One effective way to deal with that push rod when installing the fuel pump on a small block Chevy is to put a small dab of petroleum jelly on the innermost end and around the circumference of the end of the shaft and then insert it. The suction created with the use of the petroleum jelly will hold the push rod in place without the hassle that it will slide out and then install the pump. It works really well. ---Mark

@@MortskeRepair Almost wonder if the rear axle would be viable, too, though with 4.10 gears and a 3-speed *anything* that 56 ain't gonna be gettin' many speeding tickets. That being said axle width probably isn't compatible. If I was to build that car I'd probably go with a 3.08 rear end on a 3-speed non-O/D with an engine just like this one. Might as well throw another hundred cubes at it and it ain't like you'd need to do much custom fabricating to slide a 70s 350 into a triple nickel sedan. Should bolt right in if I remember Chevy smallblocks right. That 350 sounds MEAN. Probably the best running engine you've gotten out of a junk vehicle.

That's got the 4-bolt main 350. The '78 I had with that engine was a real tire-shredder. I bought it off my parents - the AC Delco maintenance-free battery lasted over 10 years. They don't make good daily drivers - you get sick of the up-n-down ride. Since you're over the front tires if they go up and down you do that too.

Easy trick to get that pushrod out of your way. There is a bolt right in line with it. Temp replace it with a longer bolt finger tight and it will hold that rod up and out of your way while you install the pump. When you are done, just replace the stock bolt. Easy peasy.
