@Mortske - The Porsche 944 was produced from 1982 - 1991. 1982 - 1984 was the Series 1. The series 1 had separate built-in gauges. All 944 are built in transaxle layouts. The 944 was built by Audi, only the last models were built by Porsche in Zuffenhausen/Outer district of the town Stuttgart. The series 2 later had considerably more powerful models with 944 S/S2/Turbo and Turbo S.

We used to have the highway patrol drive Porsches in the Netherlands, the proper ones, the 911. Can you imagine? In my humble opinion it’s just flat Volkswagen beetles with a two extra tiny cylinders and really bad weight distribution. The 924/944 evolved because of the effort of the German engineering department at Porsche where they surprisingly put a water cooled engine in the front, replacing the bags with sand, and left all the gears in the back, the geniuses. Without doubt really nice to see you struggle with this bit of epic German engineering! Love it so thank you, may the power of Grayskull be with you, you are gonna need it😂😂😂 But there’s more…. I would really like to see you some day, work on a French gem of an attempt of a car, the Citroen 2CV, you’ll be amazed!
@groundguy86892 ай бұрын
Hey Mortskie, That's a fairly nice example of an early 944. The history of the car is interesting and it is said that the 924, on which the 944 body pan is based, is the car that saved Porsche. The 944 began back in the mid-seventies as a joint Porsche/VW project as the VW people were looking for a sporty-ish car for their inventory and in cooperation with Porsche, developed to about 90%, the 924. V-dub then lost interest in the project, going instead with their fully in-house first-edition Scirocco. It was enormously successful but Porsche had on its hands something they had spent money on languishing "on the shelf". Management was facing receivership of the entire brand as Porsche had been hemorrhaging money. They finished the 924 and sold record numbers of the cars, as it was fun to drive, good on gas and, for its time, quite reliable. Now, jumping to the 944, as you may already know, the biggest complaint of the 924 was that it was an "underpowered VW with an Audi motor" which isn't exactly true. The engineers in Stuttgart had a Porsche-designed head on the 2.OL NA motor and, as is wont for Porsche of all generations, they decided to turbocharge the car, with its ultimate form being the 924 Carrera GT, their SCCA racer that was overboosted to ridiculous numbers and given fiberglass fender flares, upgraded suspension and it handled in the corners in a way that was considered absolutely delightful and predictable by drivers the world over. A factory original 924 Carrera will go for quite a lot of money and most people today don't know of its racing heritage and consistent wins in many races. It's no secret however, that the 944 gets its looks from the 924 Carrera.. But, those fenders are galvanized steel, baby. Plus, the inline 2.5L four is a wholly Porsche-developed engine. Porsche struggled with balance shafts to calm down the vibration inherent in a big four-banger and ultimately had to pay royalties to Mitsubishi for their highly-developed solution. It works very well on the Porsche motor and the result is a smooth torque curve that is delightful to drive through the twisties, or run at 100mph on long cruises. It revs to 6000 RPM regularly, uses 20-50 oil and has hydraulic lifters and is also an INTERFERENCE MOTOR! This is a key point as you want to change the timing belt regularly. Porsche says every 30k miles but I'd go 20. Once it breaks, and you roll the engine over, valves are bent. I've done a few repairs on those, they are time-consuming and costly. It's much easier to get all the dots lined up, change the timing belt, hand-pull the motor through and then proceed. There is a self-adjusting belt tensioner available. With all that said: The next issue is the clutch with the "double-rubber-donut" shock absorber in it. Porsche tried this with a couple of their 911's in the past and the problem is, it becomes a time-change item as the rubber degrades and you get a pronounced *clunk* when on/off the gas. Changing the clutch involves removing the transaxle, the drive tunnel and then the bellhousing. It takes awhile. If you have to do this job, it is best to replace the clutch with an aftermarket spring-conventional unit that works and lasts much longer. Engine mounts are liquid-filled rubber units and when new, deaden vibration well. When the right one collapses, which is always the first one, as that's the one that takes all the load under acceleration, you will feel lots of vibes through the steering wheel. But they are easily changed and still available from Porsche. I see the car has Fuchs "6's and 7's" for rims. You can put some seriously wide tires on the rear but I think you are limited to 225mm on the front for turning clearance. I had an '84 (I've owned six of these cars, all the way to '89) and the daisy star rims are a nice upgrade for it. I had that upgrade on my '84 back in the day. They look especially nice polished with the recessed areas painted semi-gloss black. I believe the rear may also have spacers installed to push the rims out a bit and to match the exterior lines of the car. Electrics can sometimes be a brain-teaser but the Haynes manual, believe it or not, isn't too bad with the circuit diagrams. But the '84 still has the same wiring as the old 924 and it is a single-ground arrangement. So cleaning terminals and such for a car this old may be the best possible thing you can do. The 944 enjoyed a long run, eventually evolving into the 968 which had a 3.0L DOC setup and was pushing around 200bhp in stock fashion. Each new year for the car pushed up the HP and torque as Porsche continued to upgrade and re-engineer things. But one thing remains, love it or hate it, the 944 made its mark on the auto world and decent examples, like you have on your hands right now, are sought after and are still very sought after for SCCA racing. For Joe BagODonuts, like me, they are just really attractive cars that look terrific, mark the date and time they were made with impressive timeless lines and generate the same oooo's and aaahhhhh's they did when new. As for the rear bumper, a new bumper shock and replacement plastic fillet on the side, painted to match will restore that 5mph bumper line in a short period of time. However, the bumper is aluminum and the welded bracket that the bumper shock mounts to inside it may have fractured, which means a new bumper is in order. Lots available on eBay....just make sure the mounting points aren't compromised. Good luck. Be patient with it. They are good cars that many people don't understand. But if you rush or do shadetree fixes, you will regret it. Good parts, adjusted to proper spec will provide huge rewards and give you a really fun to drive car. Make note of the shifter and if it's sloppy, the pin that holds the shifter to the long connecting rod to the transaxle is probably shot. New shifters are available. Do not rush this job. The ball joint that the shifter sits in is disconnected via two bolts on the drive tunnel, accessed from the top from inside the car. DO NOT PRY THE SHIFTER OUT, the bolts are hard to see and if you rush and try to pry it out, you will launch the defective shifter into the windshield. Ask me how I know. LOL (I didn't do it but my buddy did) It will be a wonderful car. You will have no problem selling it to someone who knows what it is. Best, TW

Porsche.....Italian 🤣 Had me giggling right from the get-go with THAT one, matey! Ol' Ferdinand Porsche started life as a mechanic at VW, but got disillusioned when VW didn't like his ideas for pepping them up, so went out on his own....and the rest is history. Mate of mine had a Mercedes like Puddin's one. Learnt a few things working on that. Zundefolge is firing order, yeah - easy to figure that out. The 'R' on the bottom of the gas gauge I reckoned stood for "Rock All" because you didn't get very far in his car when the gauge was pointing at it. Bloody thing did 6 miles per gallon if that....and I'm talking about its oil consumption! James Bond and his Aston Martin never had a smoke screen like Noel's Merc could put up.... One last - there were actual words on the ignition shroud for each position of the key. I nearly wet myself laughing when I saw that the word for the crank position was FAHRT. Yeah mate - just go outside and FAHRT your car for me, will you? Priceless..... Yeah, I like the 944. More sexy with its big hips than the 924. Had a better sounding engine too. However, I much prefer the 928 because it has a V8. Haven't driven one. Actually, I haven't driven ANY Porsche. Again, anything European down in this part of the world is for people who have money. They may be cheap enough to buy, but getting parts for them is another story.....and the parts take ages to get here.....and any mechanic who specialises in them charges through the nose. I should know. I owned an Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce........once upon a time, when I was younger and had a lot of disposable income.....and boy did that car dispose of a LOT of it! Nice car when it was running well and bits of rusted subframe were not falling off it.

Probably a good idea he left because we blew up the VW plants during WW2 because they were making ball bearings and parts for the German war machines. I used to work for a guy back in the late 70s a old car guy & he had a 40s VW bug sitting in his pole shed that he kept a lot of his old Hudson cars and a 27 Hudson powered fire truck he restored . He also had a special Hudson Hornet twin H power car that he had the owner of Clifford 6=8 make some special performance parts for the engine because he used to race the Hornet up the Pikes peak hill climb races back in the late 60s with the car beating the new Camaros and Mustangs setting faster times than they were. They tried to have his car disqualified from this class he told me because the guys racing those cars were mad because he was beating them lol which shows Bruce could drive the wheels off that Hornet . If you look on the Internet the car he had he named it Satan of Morimar & he had aluminum emblems he had made for him put on the rear 1/4 panels . His name was Bruce Morris Kubo who lived in Cedar MN for many years until he got killed crossing country road 22 as it was called back then which has been renamed Viking Blvd some years ago. I hadn't seen Bruce in many years but was watching the news 1 night that was coming in from MN to WI where I live now and they had mentioned a person being hit by a car & killed & when they mentioned the address I knew it was Bruce that got killed . His mail box was across the road & he had walked out to go get his mail and got hit by a car and died from this . Imagine that being a hard core car guy his whole life & getting taken out by a car . As far as the VW I'm not even sure how he got that back from Germany to the states because he never mentioned that or did I ask him but there couldn't have been very many 40s VW cars left after the war being the VW factories got bombed during the war . He had no kids and his wife Evey and his dog Skizicks was named because he was a well known skier and would teach people to snow ski part time . The Hudson Hornet he had was sold at auction and sits in a museum now and if you look for it you will notice that it had MN collector plates on it still & the Clifford 6=8 decal on the driver's door wing window plus the copper colored paint in the center of the body with the big metal flaked blue paint on the upper & lower half of the car . RIP Bruce you were a inspiration to me for working on old cars and were a good old soul may god rest your soul !

@@harrywalker968 - Americans aren't so bad, mate. However, as John Cleese once remarked "Only Americans would call a liquid, 'Gas'!". They do like their wars, but they do love their country with a fervour and commitment that I've never seen anywhere else in the world. Just a pity that the prerequisites for their political leaders appear to be an IQ starting with a decimal point, delusions of grandeur or senility...and sometimes all three. I do love their passion for cars, the V8 engine and long straight roads. I also love their bourbon whiskey....and their love of cheese keeps my home country afloat! You should have checked out the transmission configuration on that puppy. Clutch is in the bell housing and then there is a torque tube back to the transaxle. I changed several of those.. not too bad, once you get the hang of it. One time, a 944 came in and the owner said that before it quit running, he had to decide whether to change the clutch or the timing belt... he chose wrong. The timing belt snapped and it Mortske'd a valve. Had to pull the cylinder head.. it didn't break the piston, but it damaged the combustion chamber pretty well. Anyway, sent the head out to be pressure tested, it was fine. I put it back together and it ran pretty well, even with the damaged combustion chamber.

A Mortske show on Friday! Talk about a bonus. Actually, that's a great price for a '84 Porsche. That's just new/old enough that I could work on it Great episode.

I love this!! ❤️ I know you're accustomed to vintage domestics, but you should give the imports, specifically VAG cars, a try more often. That's my shit lol. You're still my favorite car youtuber regardless. 🥰🚗

Brutha-Man I’m so proud of you. First off you pronounced the name right and secondly you ain’t skurrd of no 4-N cars from Germania. I’m a classic Mercedes man myself along with good ole classic Merican cars and the lead singer in a band. I tackle songs the same way. They are both basic notes/ gas engines and the rest is just nuanced and figuring out how to make them work. GOOD ON YOU! P.S. We just did a show for a golf tournament and the drinks were generously poured and it’s 2:30 🕝 A.M. here in Atlanta so if this sounds a little over flattering, it’s not me talking, it’s the Johnny Walker Red…. Stay In School!

that pronunciation was introduced by a motoring writer in the 80s as an experiment to see if it would be taken up and used by a certain demographic of his readership that he thought were pretentious . guess what , it was .

Some of those old German fuel pumps only run when you're cranking the engine over. I've got a 78 vw bus that's like that.

The fuel injector plastic caps might be the reason it won't hot start and losses power. Without a cap(s) it will start cold. Check to see if they are on or blown off and spat out. Thanks for the show.

When these cars sit for a long time, or have anything done that involves the lifters, it takes FOREVER to get the lifters to pump up and bleed. It can sound disturbingly loud until they calm down.

German car, Audi motor. 50/50 balance front motor rear gearbox. A great car for club track racing or even rallying. Similar to my Alfaromeo GTV. Right up my ally with fuel injecters, high pressure fuel pump, but very possible clogged fuel filter? These Porche 924/944 are fluid cooled not aircooled like the 911 etc 😅

I had a girlfriend in high school that had this same car, same year, but different color (hers was black). I was never really impressed with the performance. It wasn't all that comfortable either. I will admit that everywhere we drove it, it turned heads, and everyone quoted the famous Risky Business line to us even though it was a 944 and not a 928. There actually was a substitute in my eyes, my 1974 SS big block 9 second Nova. lol

The door handles look identical to the Audi 5000. Also very notorious for breaking internally and good luck opening the door when it's broken. I'm amazed the intake boot was in a fine shape usually mice and rats love to eat these up and ruin the throttle body as well. Mechanical fuel pump? Fuel pumps are notorious on failing on these old German cars and most of the time finding a replacement is a real bugger. Chin did a fantastic job with the sensors. These German cars don't like running on low octane gasoline, bad gasoline or ethanol enriched gasoline. The older the car the more picky it is on fuel. Fouled injectors on German cars is a very common issue specially when it's ran with god knows what in the fuel tank. Mojo is like my Granny who never left the country ever. I will say Sir Mortske you did fine in getting the Porsche running and helping out your relative.

That's pretty much what my experience of Pusher 944 is too. Noisy starter, slow gearshift due to being in the dif and clutch up front. Noisy rattletrap of an engine and as reliable as a party balloon. There's a story they made it after being scoffed at as unable to built front engined cars. I believe that was almost proven to be true. BUT 948 is apparently a different case altogether!
