The presence of the previous alternator's molten remains acts as a motivator for replacement units to work extra hard. Also adds at least 1.63 horsepower by improving cooling performance. It's not a molten blob, it's an artisanal, custom forged heatsink.

Dalton: I dropped an Olds 455 in my 4 door Cutlass. On the freeway it would get hot. I learned it was because I omitted the spring that belonged in the lower radiator hose. It would result in the pump pulling the lower hose shut at higher rpm. Once I put the spring in it solved that getting hot problem. I'd bet Pontiacs will do the same thing. Your life will be changed. If you don't have one in there I'd bet it solves your cooling problem on the nice motor you pulled out.

Watching this video reminded me of chasing down an overheating issue on my '64 F-85. We tried a radiator, then a thermostat, then a water pump, then new / better electric fans, then a camshaft... turns out the person who owned it before me decided to dump at least 3 "Coolant Stop Leaks" into the block (because of a leaky core plug), which completely dammed up the coolant passages around the cylinders. Once that was fixed, that engine never ran over 180F, even in hot summer traffic. Keep up the good work, best budget auto channel on KZbin!

I don't like Stop Leak at all. I have used a few tablespoons of black pepper in a radiator which actually sealed a pinhole permanently!😂

I had the same problem with my 89 F150 Lariat, the gentleman that sold me the truck claimed it had a bad head gasket however when I ran it and traced the leak coming through a rotten freeze plug, after replacing the plugs I thought I was home free but 2 overheats later I finally realized about the stop leak. Two flushes and a new radiator later it’s been my daily for the past six years.

It's pretty cool to see someone much much much younger than myself experience the sites scenery and more important trials and efforts it actually used to take to go on a real American road trip. One of the best trips I ever went on was following your same basic route, but back in the '70s with my dad and grandpa, so many car issues along the way, but at least we had actual service stations back then with parts, hoses, tools, etc and didn't have to search for a random chain parts store with questionable at best import parts! No matter where his path leads, JD will never forget these experiences and lessons for life, not to mention be wary of the western oysters!!!!

Need a phenolic carb spacer to stop heat soaking the carb from the bottom. Then, use a closed air cleaner and run drier ducting to the grille so it can only pull air from outside of the engine bay. Did this on my f150 and the difference was startling. There a reason the oems don't use open air cleaners. They just suck all the hot air from the engine bay, and it chokes the engine. I put an IAT to check and the intake temps at 65mph cruise with the open element you could watch the temps rise then feel it start to surge. With the snorkels, it would actually drop in temp on the highway and didn't heat soak at idle in traffic. And this is on an f150 with a much larger engine bay than the Skygoat so on yours it would be even more beneficial 😊

Don't sell the Thunderbird short. They can make for a very nice cruiser. I too am building a '79 Thunderbird, 302/C-4 car and it is almost road ready, only needing some small items. They ride great, and hot ridding is as easy as building a '72-'76 Torino, as they are the same chassis. You can build a big block car out of these using the big block '73 Ranchero motor mounts, radiator and C-6 mount on the crossmember. Then repaint it as an older man's car and shock the competition when you jump on it. All the Torino goodies are a direct bolt on affair. You can have fun with that Thunderbird.
@Stephens_offroad_and2 ай бұрын
My dad bought one new in November of '79. He's said he surprised quite a few Corvettes and things in the '80s with the stock 351W/FMX. They aren't that fast by modern standards, but they're good highway cars, and for what they are they aren't bad on gas. A 460 was offered earlier in this generation so the proper mounts should exist even without having to hunt around for Ranchero stuff. And supposedly someone in the '90s or early 2000s made an aluminum 460 block capable of being bored and stroked to something like 869 CI... That would really make that 5,000 pound car into a N/A old man sleeper.
@Stephens_offroad_and2 ай бұрын
My dad put 208k miles on his before parking it in '92 because the gas tank was rusting out and the the freshly rebuilt transmission had a bad leak from a seal the shop forgot to replace. One of these days I'll get around to putting it back on the road... All that seems to have happened in the last 32 years are that the engine and master cylinder both seized up, and there's maybe 3 square inches of body rust in the whole car - predominantly in the pillars where the vinyl top was. The engine did turn by hand one time when it was extremely cold outside while I was there, so with enough soaking of the two rusty cylinders it should come free even in warm weather. He had a dealer replace the engine at 160k and it still has clear crosshatching on the cylinder walls. It also still has the original 1979 dated spark plug wires and valve covers...

We also had cooling issues on some of the cars we worked on with my dad, usually when a car is ran on tap water, or topped off using tapwater the lines get dirty and crudy, and when you fill it up with fresh coolant or dump the old water and refill without cleaning it, all the gunk in the cooling system gets released at clogs up everything. Talking about breaking down in the farmers field reminds me when I was stationed in Millington Tn. in 1976. I had a '66 VW bug . One of the wheel bearings went dry while we were driving around the back roads . With no shoulder to pull off to I pulled into a driveway far enough to get off the road . I jacked it up , pulled off the wheel and was trying to get enough grease into the bearing to get back . I turned around because someone was coming to see who was trespassing , it was a black guy riding a 10 speed bike with 2 dobermans , one on each side of him . He asked if we were ok , I said yes and we'll be gone in a few minutes , he said ok and turned and went back to the house . The 2 friends I was with asked if I knew who that was , I said "no" , they said "That's Ben Vereen" , I said "Never heard of him".
