Күн бұрын

High in a narrow canyon of Death Valley lie the remnants of a once prosperous gold mine. The bunkhouse/kitchen and a couple of miners' cabins, built in the 1930s/40s, are still intact, along with many artefacts.
Due to continuous vandalism, we are not giving out the name or location of this mining camp.
Please feel free to share your memories in the comments below without divulging the whereabouts of this "pin". Thank you for your understanding.

Here in Northeastern Ontario Canada all the abandoned shafts are covered with concrete slabs with hooks embedded into the concrete slabs as they are usually by a crane or such, as we are in relatively flat ground (no mountains here, and very few adits).

We have seen that in certain locations here in the states too, if the shafts are really dangerous. The majority are open, with signs stating the dangers of course.

Cool you guys teamed up with Jenni :-) Loved the intro!! Good (visual) story-telling with nice close-ups combined with you lot walking up, close-ups of plants and wild-life. Great location which seems remarkably well preserved, so kudos for you to try and keep it that way! ;-) There were plenty of adverts while I watched, so you guys must really rake it in :-p Just wondering: will you be doing anything with the Crystal Geyser footage you teased a couple of videos ago, or was there no story to tell in that erea?

Andrea and Steven, I'm pretty sure that is a Chuckwalla Lizard, it looks like the one I saw on the Bright Angel Trail I hiked out of the Grand Canyon. The get between cracks in rocks and puff up their bodies so they so they can't be removed. The Native Americans used to poke them with a stick to deflate them. They tasted like chicken. :) For anyone reading this THAT IS MY BACKYARD!!!!!! The world is my back yard...really!!! Cheers, Rik Spector

Such a great "pin". Glad you have chosen to start keeping locations secret. I think those pans/bowls were for that night-time thing. You know, when you don't wan't to be walking along a little path on the side of a cliff in the dark of night. Now that shovel experience could have very well happened. Often the Tommy-knockers, those friendly imps of the miners, will show you a shovel because they know that the mine is not done. A hint, so to speak. On the way up i really enjoyed the view. That arch behind the gals was classic. Was it the explore? Or the journey up? It was both. Three beautiful people, in a rugged yet wonderful background, hmm... I'll have to check out that old gals videos. She's kind of cool. Ah...well, what should i expect from the likes of you two. Great editing, lovely hike, beautiful people, what a cup of coffee and what a cool explore. If your friend is ever in the area tell her to stop by. Until next week, have fun, be safe, walk lightly, and never leave a trace.

you could see where the Park Service or someone had braced that whole cabin to keep it standing - - easy to spot new 2x4s added to support weak areas especially the diagonal one covering where the flue pipe from the stove went. When dating things look for nails - - the old square hand made versus the round manufactured ones. Congrats on this new one you're getting the terminology right. Remember Jeff's explanation of the timed explosions to fracture the wall then then bottom ones went off to drop it on the muck sheet - - he studied the process and I'm sure talked to some old timers but my point is he started where you guys were but had an interest (in his case a passion) and he sucked up knowledge like a sponge until when you talk to him its like being there with a miner who worked the mine - - same thing with Frank. People will follow you both because they can relate to seeing everything through your eyes and they feel they are learning right along with you. You were completely right to not make it easy to find - - the folks that want to see it for the right reason will make the effort. As the old cowboys I knew would say - - ya done good

We love learning new things all the time and sharing that with everyone who watches our content. Some very quickly forget that not everyone was born knowing about mines, mining equipment, or how everything about history and how it all worked. Doesn't mean we don't have the upmost respect for the hard work, sheer determination and ingenuity it took to make a go at it back then. Makes us more appreciative of our past and ancestors and we want to make sure their stories continue to be told.

Hi Barry. I had an apartment in E. Vic Park (Perth) but also did the fruit picking season for a couple of years- apples, pears, toms, lemons etc (you get the idea). I got bitten by a red back whilst picking grapes in the Barossa Valley, swam with crocs in Katherine Gorge and Sharks on the GB Reef. And carved up on corral. Don't remember it being called the thunder box though.

Y'all can pin a map location would be nice to understand quickly where you are. I have to Google map it. I am sure enjoying y'all. I will be voting my step brother in June if I can talk him into short travels to ghost towns would so exciting. He lives in Chandler, Az which is east of Phoenix Arizona. I can borrow his little car and take short drugs by myself or take my son with me who lives in the border of Tempe and east Phoenix. But I used to drive from Las Cruces New Mexico to Chandler Arizona to see and help my brother out and drove back I surely enjoyed it but if I knew a few stops that I could explore I would have done it. Wish I never left the Southwest but someday. Who knows. Y'all put a special spot in my heart we relate and have a passion for southwest history. It is where all my ancestors came from settled. Even from Europe and Spain. Mom said in New Mexico we are all mixed not from Mexico because of the euro settlements. We have red hair to light brown to dark or light eyes. Native indian feature to euro features. My sister's and I are all completely look different. Mom from NM dad is from CA. His mom urgent from Mexico but the different history and my mother has a completely different mystery. And they're Spanish is more Castilian but she hit that from us for many years. I did talk to her older cousins my uncle that live in New Mexico so it's been very interesting history and very unique.

That was so good. I loved the cabin with the refrigerator. Looks like people stay in that often. It is good to see Jenny too. I missed her video of this. I've been caught up in the people's protest in Washington. They really need more people making videos. If you want to go thru hell to get a whole bunch of viewers, it would be the place to go. I'm watching Sasnak. He's a truck driver and goes out west. It started February 23rd from California/Arizona and went across the country to Maryland. I even went to greet some of them when they came thru Indiana. I missed the best one. 2 hrs south. Dang it. Monrovia, Indiana. Check out a video of that. They had the biggest flag in the world' i think. I took a picture of a truck i see every day driving around the beltway. Bad things are starting to happen. Rocks an bricks thrown from overpasses. Nails. Cops are blocking exit ramps for no reason an they are causing accidents so the protest will get blamed. I don't think I said anything to get you in trouble. Usually a wash and shaving basin for the men, catch basin for a wet diaper in the wee hours of the morn, ladies bed pan when snow was on the path to the outhouse, and a wash basin for women's ditties and unmentionable contrivances. So there were his, her and utility basins under one roof. Modern plumbing is marvelous.

Argh! Completely forgot to comment. Love, love, love this exolore, the three of you. Always love Miss Jenni! What a superb remote location. Oh, and, the ubiquitous 'bog', as we called it! 😂 Shovel? 🤔 Was Stephen correct? Or, is it haunted? 🤔😂

I like your videos. Luckily my wife and I have done what you are doing. We did it from 1971 until 2017. We just took photos only for ourselves but no videos. We always had a nice RV. You are doing it the hard way. I give you a lot of credit. You have a hard life. We have subscribed and will always give you a thumbs up to help support your channel. Have you done a video explaining who you are? It would be nice to know a bit about where you are both from and how you arrived at this adventure.

Wow, 71 to 17. Now that is putting pins in the atlas! We haven't done an actual video, but we do touch on it in our Journey series, however, we have an "About Us" page on our website which goes into more detail. pinintheatlas.com/ Thank you so much for your support, and hope you continue enjoying our content.

@@PinInTheAtlas I read your bio. Thanks for telling us more about you. You seem like really nice folks. We wish you much success. I just looked at one of your older videos. You were having issues with condensation in your truck bed. Did you solve that issue? If not, I can tell you how to solve it. Let me know. I have spent my life outdoors and since 1970, my wife also joined me in our outdoor adventures. In the 60's, I came of age in central Florida. in 1964, I hitchhiked to Oregon and got a job working in the woods. I worked in the woods as a surveyor in Oregon, Washington, California and three years in Alaska. Some of my time in Alaska was living in the wilderness in a log cabin. I was there in the 'old' Alaska BEFORE the Alaska pipeline. Starting in 1971, my new wife and I purchased our first motorhome. I met my wife at Florida State University in 1969 and married in Dec. 1970) In 1970 before we got married, my girlfriend flew from Florida to Fairbanks, Alaska and came to our wilderness camps and was our cook. She had just gotten her Masters Degree from FSU. Three guys and her in the wilderness. That impressed me so much I married her. We've now been together for 53 years. All these years, all I had to say to her was how about another adventure and she would say, when do we leave? In the past 30 years, we spent most of our time in the West exploring old ghost towns and old mine sites. We had motorhomes towing a Toyota extended cab with an ATV in the bed of the truck (just like yours....white too). We've had solar on the roofs of our last two motorhomes since the early 90's. We would travel just for fun seven months a year and then live at our home in Oregon during the summer. Probably 75% of our boondock camping sites were on Public Lands in Arizona, Utah and Nevada. We love the open spaces of the SW desert. We park the MH in some really remote spot and then take the ATV and explore everything within 25 miles in all directions. We got to go places where nobody ever goes. We had three storage boxes on our ATV so we could take lots of stuff with us. The last 15 years, we carried an emergency satellite beacon for emergencies. Luckily, we never had to use it. We feel lucky that we did what we did when we were relatively young. Many of the things we did and places we went are now closed. Just too many people now. We live on a couple of acres about 25 miles south of Portland, Oregon. We have two RV sites with full hookups on our property. If you guys are ever up this way, you are welcome to stay here for a couple of days. We're close to I-5 but out in the country. You could take showers and do some laundry. When temps in the desert start hitting 90F, you might like to head north. We love 60F to 75F. We just followed the seasons in our MH so everywhere we went, it was in those temperature ranges. RV and truck beds are not a fun place to be when temps are really cold or hot.. My wife grew up partially in Sweden and I grew up partially in Germany. We have lived in probably 50 places during our lifetimes. My wife Greta has collected dinosaur bones and other semiprecious rocks for 50 years and is a pretty well know glass artist. Keep up the great videos. Stick a new pin in it!

@@phillip5545 Thank you for sharing. It seems you have both had a life full of adventures. No we haven't had any luck with solving the condensation issues. When we can, we leave the windows and the back open. When its all closed up and its cold - that's when we get the issues. By all means share any info you can email us at info4pinintheatlas@gmail.com If you have any suggestions about explores, please let us know via email. Thanks once again

Good evening, Andrea & Stephen. Enjoyed your last video with Jenni and very happy y’all got together! I subscribed to both of your channels after seeing you on Wonderhussy’s Videos. I really liked the interaction between y’all during the filming. So many times it seems when there are more than one filmmaker, they tend to go off on their own path. I like the way you can bounce ideas between each other and maybe get a different perspective about the subject observed! Also, curious who to contact to have a protective structure over the open shaft that you found at the mine. Will you be having a Live Stream? Have you ever made a video about the “Painted Desert “ in Arizona? Keep Safe & Healthy!!

Hi Cary, and thanks for all the compliments. We had a fun time with Jenni and another video to come, so stay tuned. We have made a video on the Painted Desert which is on our Patreon page. What a beautiful area it is. As far as doing live streaming, probably not. Being on the road, living in Tonto, we don't or rarely have decent wifi, plus we never really know where we are going to be, our plans change daily! So happy you are enjoying our explores.
