This video is a exploration of the abandoned LORAN C Coast guard station in Searchlight Nv. From what I found this station was established in 1976 and shut down in February 2010 due to budget cuts and the station was considered to be obsolete with the availability of gps systems. If you was stationed here or have any stories to share please do in the comments would love to learn more history about this location.

It was a coastguard loarn c broadcasting station.. It's what airplanes and boats used to navigate before GPS. How it works was by triangulation of three different stations it used to have three big radio transmitting antennas. And the planes and ships or boats would have a reciver and by the triangulation it would give you a latitude and longitude of your position.

Early days of Cellular CDMA Loran was used for timing the digital radios. Probably varied by carrier/equipment manufacturer but that was taken over by GPS around 2000.

I’ve wondered if LORAN would ever be used again as a backup to GPS. Looking at this video I’d say the firm answer is a solid “no friggin way.”

9:26 "Anybody know what these machines are or what they did?" The APC (American Power Conversion - A company) cabinet immediately in front of you when you asked that question is a VERY large uninterruptible power supply (UPS) the cabinets off to the right would have housed the batteries for the UPS. A UPS can "clean" and condition the dirty power a generator produces for sensitive electronic equipment. It can also provide the equipment limited run time on the batteries. A scenario could be: facility is running on one generator that has a fault, that generator shuts down, while the second backup generator is starting and getting up to speed the UPS keeps the electronic equipment constantly running.

I saw a newer video of this location a while back, and it's worse now than this due to all the scrappers. In that video, all the gensets were pretty much torn down, basically, just the blocks. With one exception of one genset, guess the scrappers couldn't get one of the heads off. Good lord, I bet there isn't a single fluorescent ballast left in that place. Now that I am thinking of it, I think that some of the fluorescent fixtures were taken in that hallway that you walked through. So sad. Anything that drug users will do to get their next fix.......

Yes, I liked what you filmed! Whereabouts from Searchlight is this abandoned eyesore? Any evidence of “The Big Stick”?! By that, I mean the electronic Transmission-tower the navigational signal radiated from...

One room had large HVAC units that sent cool air under the floor to the Transmitter room to cool the transmitters. The copper thief’s really torn that place up! It took a lot of work to remove the stators from those generators, and I doubt they got a lot of money for it? Unless they went to a lot more trouble to remove the wires From the slots. That is a lot of work.

Definitely a data center. Some of those big blue cabinets with the fans at the bottom were A/C units to keep the server room cool. The others were PDUs, and UPS cabinets.

This appears to be a data collection center of some kind not exactly sure all the racks with squirrel cage blowers are high speed date server racks that run at super high rates of speed gathering and storing data the raised floor is for cables or fiber optics as the apc switches are fairly current. The 5 stages of generator power is indicating large energy was being drawn for use the 2 generators are either diesel or propane the ones indoor would possible be natural gas not sure. More is going on underneath the structure. The further it is away from prying eyes the better it is. The coast guard is in on collecting large amounts of data also the level of generators indicates possible mining situations were occurring. Also with all the energy scrubbers and capacitance tenders just sitting around they were dumping and drawing gobs of energy. Only thing that you did not show was the heating and cooling systems that would give even more clues. Next time check out your local att brown towers and you wonder why you never see people working in them anymore maybe a few people not like they use to be full of people and desks now all att buildings are self functioning indexing with small support staffs. Next time you are near an att brown building look around generators and weird spaces yet hardly any people just like building generators and generally weird designs. The large blowers indicate fiber optic systems were in use as well
