What a crossing... Signs tagged or damaged, wigwags damaged as well and very mossy, lights destroyed, some of them don't have any bulbs. All that in a line that looks like it has never seen any train, so the crossing hasn't "closed" once (in quotation because no barriers here!) All that in the middle of nowhere, aside from the river just before it. Quite a shame, and quite sad to see.

The reason why Ham Hall railway is no longer in use, is because first of all,it is named after the country house the railway was built on, and secondly Ham Hall was also a colliery, and the reason it was closed, either the coal mine closed, or it was one of the railways that Breeching closed

Wow, that's a strange crossing. It reminds me very much of the crossing in Shoeburyness. You probably haven't heard of it but in Shoebury high street, right next to the train station, there is a single track railway that crosses the road. It has manual gates, which I imagine the driver uses, and the railway disappears into a field and goes behind some houses. Every night between 22:30 and 00:30 a train carrying ammunition to the MOD place in Shoberyness uses it. When I go there to visit some family, I can hear it's horn just as I am getting ready for bed. I was wondering if you knew about it or wanted to film it. I have walked over the tracks many times but I have never stayed up to film it. Kind regards, Boom😄.
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Boom 😁 I have actually heard of that crossing and know roughly where it is. I've not yet been to it though. Interesting it's used late at night.
@BoomTrainspots4 жыл бұрын
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Yeah, I think it’s used at that time so that there is no traffic. The gates only cover the pavement so the train has to go into the road barrierless. I don’t know when the train returns though🤔😄.
@SgtChip3 жыл бұрын
It's probably used at night as a security measure. It's a lot harder to attack something you don't see coming.
@BoomTrainspots3 жыл бұрын
@@SgtChip Yeah, that would make sense but it comes at the same time every night and it’s tones echo over the whole of Shoebury. I imagine they do it at that time because the driver has to get out and open the gates, stopping traffic by hand because there are no lights or electric barriers👍.

@SgtChip3 жыл бұрын
That's truly a waste of good equipment. It's only hope now is preservation (unlikely) or reactivation and finishing of the spur for industrial purposes (can't even describe how unlikely). Good call on not pushing the plungers for the crossing. If those rail signals are still on and working, it likely means all of the wiring is ready, and the quiet nature preserve would have had an odd noise join: A Yodalarm.
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately both of those things are very unlikely as there's now not much to preserve at this crossing, and the line was built for a power station which is now a large industrial estate. I was tempted to see what happened but as you said, the chance the equipment might still work was why I didn't tamper with the plungers.

@adrianthoroughgood11916 ай бұрын
It looks like something out of a post apocalypse film! My guess is that they thought the line would be completed at some point so they left the crossing equipment there ready for that situation. Since the track was laid a train could theoretically come along even though there was nowhere to go. They didn't think it was worth paying someone to remove the equipment because maybe next year they will need it. But no one maintained it so it degraded. Leaving the euipment there might have protected the cables though so at least they might be possible to use even if the equipment needed replacing. Or its possible that it just fell through the cracks. It might not be on the crossing database since the line was not open so no one realised it needed to be removed.
