Күн бұрын

I picked up this 1961 Chevrolet BelAir "Bubble top" a year ago. A coworker found it locally in one of my teacher's shelter belts while looking for deer sheds. They were more than willing to let the car go as it had sit in their trees since before they bought the farm in the 1970s. So, being the sucker that I am for bubbletops I jumped at the opportunity to drag it home even if it's a complete basket case! Let's address some issues with this car, first thing is to find the VIN to acquire a title and install a drivetrain and pedal assemblies from last weeks 1962 BelAir donor car. I'm not really ready to part with this one as I've got more parts for it to install and I'm kind of attached but if you made me a crazy offer I might consider it. You never know! As always, thanks for watching!

Just say no to the later front clip. You'll find one in due time. Disc brakes are really nice to have. I vote for taking time to build this car as nice as possible, for as low as you can possibly keep the budget. Time is on your side with this one. Four times the old shop means seven times the work to keep from losing the new one. Pretty sure that's how math works. Congrats on the new space. Having a lift makes all the difference in the world.

I think you were talking yourself into taking all of the parts from the 62 and getting it back together. You went over and above what I thought you would get done on it this week. It's an impressive change to the car. Duff looks like he is loving the new shop location. Lots of critters to chase.

Congrats on the new shop. Looks as though now things will be way gooder than crawling under cars on a creeper. As for the bubble top, swapping frames would have to wait until you get the new VIN tag because a "new" frame won't match for VIN to do paperwork.Otherwise it sounds like a good plan especially if the front-end components are useable. I would media blast the frame if you do swap it but it strikes me that a good coat of rust converter followed by a good rust paint would be cheaper than powder coating it. The front clip, though, sounds as though it might be better to look for a '61 clip even if you have to repair it and you already have 3 out of 4 main parts (grille, bumper and Left fender assy). A bit of welding and a date with the english stump and you would be in business.

my sentiments exactly. Nice Choice Mortske on that gorgeous body and roof line. Love me a early 60's Chevrolet Bubble top/full size automobile.. I just happened into a '64 Old's F85 instead of one of these years Impala Caprice or Bel Air. Though my early Chevelle El Camino is my real favorite. Congrats and I'm a looking forward in seeing whatever you do with this ol' Girl. I think a Dirt track car would be fun with a ton more Ass from a 327ci 348 396 or 427ci.btw.

@@RabidSnot if you're talking 1961, you might be thinking Impala, Bel Air and Biscayne. The Caprice wasn't introduced until 1965 under the Impala tag and had the official Caprice label in 1966. These all were great cars!

Another excellent Mortske Monday video, the 61 was in a lot better shape than I thought it was gonna be. I personally would want to hold out for the 61 parts but with all the "free" 62 parts on hand, it's hard to pass on keeping with the cheap build idea. Either way, congrats on the upgraded shop, keep up the awesome work, and thanks for another great video.

I LOVE THIS. Been watching your stuff for about a year now-always love the "Will it run" vids on these old forgotten Chevys. I want to see more of this car. Even if you piece it together-use a '61 front clip. It will look weird with the tail lights with a '62 on it. I would grab as much as you can from that 4 door though. I've been having a ton of fun the last 5 days working a '73 Imperial LeBaron I shipped here to Spokane from Missouri. I love resurrecting old rides myself. It's fun and keeps me out of trouble.

U-joint hack... as someone that has lost needle bearing too many times to count, I wrap a few rounds of electrical tap around the joint to keep the caps on as long as possible until I bolt it back in again. I tape as soon as I unbolt it from the car. The odds of me getting the drive shaft out before a cap falls off is very slim. As for that floor shift, remember that those cars came with a two speed auto and most guys put in a three speed auto. No column shift was made for them.

Get your glass, get your clip stay in your budget, then resto mod the interior to keep it classy, but that's just what I would do.

My favorite of the early 60's Chevy's. had a 61 2dr. post, 348 tri power. couldn't keep rear ends in it. No money one time to fix after blowing up the 5th or 6th pumpkin, Fri nights on the " Gut" were ruff back then. traded it to an employed friend, for a 2 dr valiant slant 6 3spd on the flr. factory stk. He wrapped it around a giant fir tree at he bottom of a hill in the snow. I always appreciate take a set of bones and sticking on some life, and takin it for a rip. Fun. It don't matter how you get it, long as no one else gets hurt. C U next week.

Love the channel, love your sarcasm. The bubble top is by far the best style for the Impala they ever made.Like the fact you are doing a budget build people need to know you dont need concourse builds to have fun.You can have fun with junk and not worry about getting it dirty.Keep up the great work and keep the sarcasm coming.

I was born September 12th, 1962, I don't remember seeing these that much in Moline, Illinois except for when I walked to kindergarten in the fall of 1967. The Chevy's I do remember had 6 tail lights, not 4, So the official sales numbers for the 1961 models must have been low.

This is a project full commitment. Love bubble tops with all the windows down. That rear bumper is pristine. Proud of you for washing it first. Pat on the back to Chin. It's alive. Making one out of two is just the way it goes I'm doing it why not you. Wait on the 61 front end there's plenty to do for awhile. You're a magician.

I think being a 2 door bubble top, you need to do it right or pass it to someone that will. If it were a rust bucket sedan, then a budget build to make it safe enough to drive would be the way to go.

You did some great work on that 61,but too keep going is going to cost a lot of cash and many hours. You might be able to just keep looking and digging and fine something that isn’t so labor and money demanding. Just my two cents

Great video Mortske. I was surprised that car did not have more rust than it already does. I think you maybe could just keep scrounging parts and find the right front clip for it. And just keep doing what you’re doing. Not like you’re going to drive it 3000 miles. Or maybe. Anyway I think it’ll be an awesome looking ride when you have it finished. Carry-on. Will be waiting for the next one. Be safe.

I vote put the good frame under it,the car is worth it and everything will fit proper.do the front clip last, keeping your eye out for a 61 donor.I agree with you it needs the correct sheet metal on it.those are beautiful cars.

Not sure of the "Fisher Tag" on the firewall would be the expected VIN but could substitute if the VIN given once final front fenders bumpers engine and stamping back then. Of course in case of my Buick as to ensure owners cant do any 3800 mods like the M90 which was standard for same motor used in the discontinued only year earlier standard Park Ave and as to try to cram Northstars as the higher power option VIN is now stamped on motor "for life" of the car😊
