I agree. Before my grandma died in NYC, she asked me what I wanted...I told her I wanted the FAMILY PHOTOS and her tea cup collection. My millionaire cousin never gave me the China British Crown teacups, but fortunately my grandma sent me the photos before she died. I treasure EVERY PHOTO to hand down to my children. Shiela's children obviously didn't care. I'd love to know what became of them.

Watching these videos has caused me to start thinking more about the tracks of my life, after I pass away. I have always just ignored the “after” phase of my life but I owe it to my 6 kids and 12 grandkids to not leave behind a mess. I'm 76 now and my parents lived to 85 and 92 - so time is running out.

I am in my 50's and no children. I recently came to a similar conclusion. I don't own a lot,but I will slowly reduce it more, to what I really need. I will give away things to friends and charity. Sell some things if I can to help financially. I am now even reducing what I buy even moreso. So at least when I go there won't be much left to worry about. The valuable things have already been given to whom I want. Also as I get older there is less for me to care for,and worry about. If I ever need to move I won't have much to transport.

Emotional abuse (as well as other kinds) is extraordinarily common, and traumatized adult children are completely justified in not wanting to bring items that cause bad memories (re-traumatizing) into their own homes.

Hi, again! I have watched again from Norway. To me its very nostalgic, as the doctor and wife married the year after I was born, they were a bit older than my parents who married very young. My dad died many years before mom, and she downsized and moved to a smaller apartement when we discovered she got Alzheimers. She later lived in a nursing home the last years, so we did not have much to clean up when she passed ladt year. It all happened little by little, but our parents home was very well kept and was sold. Mom bought her last home around 2008. This was sold when she left to be nursed. We children have shared and kept many memories, some furnitures, some pictures, some decorating items. Small things here and there. We are 3 siblings born from 1958 till 1963. We have cherished all the memories, even some not of money value. My daughter is very much like me, she will keep memories after us, because she knows we got memories from her grandparents and greatgrandparents as well. When we keep items of memories we make a home of history. Its not only material. I love stuff having affection value. I remember I wondered as a 5 year old why my greatgrandmother had so much old looking stuff totally different from the home I lived in. It was because my childhood home was brand new, looking like from the late 50thies and up into the 60thies. We had not yet inherated anything from our grandparents or greatgrandparents. It came much later when I was adult and a parent myself. Then my parents had a home mixed from 3 generations, ....while my home, now with small kids, were new and modern. Untill I got old stuff from my grandparents and from my parents. I love to take care of stuff. My diningroom furnitures is almost 40 years old. I have painted them and made new chaircovers. I do not buy new stuff if I like what I have. My beautiful classical looking dining furnitures is made of oak and got space for 12. My kids grew up with it. It was new when they were 3 and 5 years old. They where white before, but now they are dark blue. I love the memories of all the family dinners with the kids and now grandkids. All the Christmases and birthdays. We have moved a few times, after they grew up and moved, but the same dining furnitures makes it still look home to them. I do not kling to material things, I just take care of it as long as I live. I do not have anything I cant leave. Heaven is much better. ❤

I do know that until the decision is made and signed the family are not allowed to remove anything- not even a photo - and be told there will be jail time or financial consequences. For example. I live 5 thousand miles from family. So, God forbid, something happens to B Mom or siblings I would not be able to come financially. Which my family wouldn’t take it well. I just want to say- my mother is living her final days in a 10 bedroom what one could call a 'mansion', and I have zero interest in any of the things in the house. Family members have taken the valuables and mother continues to manipulate everyone. There are no memories of that horrid place which I would wish to have. So, appearances may be deceiving, there could be reasons why family members have no interest in 'family history', they just want to be rid of the memories of it. I can rest easy knowing that people will always speak kindly of me and the things I did. So Lesley, don't forget that the little insignificant 'peasant' homes are often full of love far more than mansions, but on the other hand you won't find kind people's things abandoned like that.

Not always true. Some parents are very good and kind but their kids decide to care more about money and status and reject their parents. I worked in nursing homes and have seen the kindest, sweetest people treated horribly by their families. The way it should be isn’t always the way it is.😢

Hi Lesley, what an amazing find, this place is the apotome of American life, as I watch a lot of KZbin, and see how people in Europe are, they seem more appreciative of their gardens and the lovely homes that they have, not so much the grandeur and the objects they fill it with. You have more respect for this man than his family members do. People are searching genealogy and ancestry websites for information and all of this man’s accomplishments are sitting on shelves. It makes me want to cry. Based on the dates that would make his children my age. They probably had enough to deal with just getting mom into a nursing home. But to not have an estate sale or shred documents blows my mind. It’s also possible that as boomer’s they might also no longer be alive.

I love the way people back in the day decorated their homes. Very little usually matched but their personalities showed so clearly in their decor. For example… the ding room… such a lovely room with the so formal chandelier the oriental China cabinet in ebony wood. The lighter colored credenza and the medium colored table. It seems that the children and other relatives of the baby boomer generation don't care a whitt about their heritage. Don't want any of the cherished family heirlooms. Don't even want to be bothered to settle their parents estate. Leave the dissolution and management to lawyers and their paralegal staff. So sad. It really saddens me to see these historic old homes so neglected! I suppose the money is much better than memories. It completely burns me up to see senseless grafitti and destruction, not to mention the theft. This is a gorgeous home! So open and airy. Lots of glass, exquisite furniture and mirrors which just make it feel so welcoming and spacious. It could absolutely be restored. Again, all about the money. Can make more if it's sold to a developer. Makes me want to cry 😢 Sure wish I could be experiencing this in person. Thank you for documenting this home so beautifully❣

Just wanted to point out something about the Doctor's age/date of death [2015]. Lesley says "[the Doctor] was born 'post WW2'..." If Doctor died in 2015 at age of 86, he would've been born in 1929 [PRE-WW2] and, most likely, fought in the US/Korean War in the early 1950s.

To help you feel a little better about photographs left behind, particularly in recent times, family photographs on camera film are usually printed in multiple copies for family and friends. Those photos likely live on in the albums in the homes of family members. We now can easily make copies of older photos from grandparents albums and collections with out taking them from their original home.

I very much DOUBT that the kids care about the PHOTOGRAPHS. What grandparents and parents cared about the children could care less about. You see this in MANY of these ABANDONED home videos.

I don’t know, in my family all kids and grandkids have copies of most family pics, at least of those following down their branches and major holiday group shots. We may keep more shots digitally these days (which is actually safer and more easier shared), but we have them. I find your attitude rude and very judgmental. To my mind it says more about you than it does about “younger generations”. I’m sorry your experience with us has left you with such a poor impression

The red board at ~6:00 which is full of photos, certificates, etc was most likely a memorandum board/collage which would have been displayed at the funeral. It's a way to remember the deceased and honour their achievements in life.

I'll never understand how or why a property is left without any family intervention or care. I just can't wrap my head around it. Wouldn't you at least hire someone to sell the stuff, collect personal items, and sell the property? That no one took care of anything and left it for looters and vandals to rummage through seems disrespectful and negligent to me. Maybe there was too much bad blood and feelings between the surviving family members. It's a mystery. Also it looks like way more than 7 years of decay. The property is stuck in the 60s to early 70s and looks like it has been rotting for 40 years or more. It was obviously a beautiful house at one point, but a money pit and maintenance nightmare with a sad ending. Thanks Leslie for another great exploration.

A lot of the photos you saw were of either a daughter or granddaughter because they looked post 1980s photography. They likely had kids in the 1960s, so any of the more modern looking color photos are grandkids, which were probably born in the 80s and 90s. Just sad that all those photos were left behind! I can only think there might have been some tragedy preventing the kids from reclaiming their parents photos!

That bed is called a day bed in America. The pictures of female children were probably grandchildren pics. The house over all is traditional decor from 60's forward.

I would think that this Doctor had a Staff that sent Bills out, and he saw Patients in his Office at the Hospital or another location. It really makes me want to cry when I see a LIFETIME OF MEMORIES EATEN UP BY TIME!!!! What is going on with their children?! They couldn't pick their parents "WEDDING PHOTO ALBUM" up and SAVE IT? And God Forbid they can't take the time to go through their Ancestral Home and pick some things out, then make sure that this BEAUTIFUL MANSION was Sold!!!! I just DON'T GET IT!!!!

Hi Lesley, Abandoned Million Dollar Mansion of Doctor in the United States!! Wow so many things to see, some I recognize & some I don`t!! It`s a Shame that in 2 Years this Place will Be Demolished, a Shame the Children at least should of taken the Pictures & sold All the Furniture & Chandeliers!! When the Demolition Day comes those Men, will go thru the house & take everything they want & the rest will be Smashed!! ( I seen my neighbors house smashed & all the windows & lights hanging & bathrooms were Smashed, thankfully the 2 Adult Children took everything out of house except the Queen Waterbed with sheets behind, & I called a friend & they took it!! The Neighbors house had a Above Swimming Pool & Whirlpool Tub, was put in dumpster) This Mansion everything like Pictures of Family will be put in the Dumpster & anything they Don`t Want!! As for you saying a Collapsing Door..it`s Called Push Door Open! Bread Toaster is Called Toaster Built In! As for the Vandalism Jerks, looking for things to Sell were Crazy, because All the Furniture, Mirrors, Crystal Lamps & Chandeliers, & Stained & Clear Beveled Windows & Round Top Windows..All Worth Money $$$!! You thought in the Kitchen it was strange to have Cabinets So Low, that was for Serving Food on Plates to Family or Guests!! In the Child`s Yellow Bedroom the Bed was called a Day Bed!! I think the Vandalism Broke the Railing to go Upstairs! I think the Furniture could of been Changed in Different Years!! The Master Bedroom had a Beautiful Satin Blanket on the Bed!! As for Presidents, Correct President John Kennedy & the other one was President George Washington in Basement!! The Picture thing You Pointed to that Most of Us had was View Master Finder, I too had one!! In Basement..You Missed the Bubble Gum Machine Next to the Bar!! The Bad Shape Record Player was called a Victoria Record Player!! Swimming Pool, was Gorgeous...maybe they will save it for Next Mansion & they had a 6 Car Garage, that will Be Smashed!! Lesley, always love watching your videos. Please be mindful of places like that basement. Severe water damage from flooding and it had significant mold. I know you don’t want to narrate with a respirator but your personal safety must take priority. 44:57

I can not believe a place like this was absolutely abandoned with everything still left inside. That is not normally done here in America. The parents of this callabor always have a Will and usually give the children an inheritance. So I don't understand why all that was left behind. I recognize those word stickers on the photos. The stickers were popular back in the mid to late 1980's. I used them on a lot of my photos. Those mirrors look like they are made of Venetian glass, and that is very very expensive. It's very possible they had a summer house or vacation house that you see pictures of the family in a different house.

At the very least they could have donated the clothes and other items to people who could have used them if they weren't interested in making money. But I guess that would have taken too much of their valuable time and effort.

The grandchildren not well off enough to buy mansions so that huge gigantic furniture hasn't any place to fit. The pictures... the small items.. don't know I'm guessing they already have what they wanted and the left behind stuff is junk to them? For sure one of them was in process of taking pictures and the wedding album. Maybe the car was full.

Some others might be fine giving it away, "but later", I'm busy with the new place the new baby etc Later the roof caves in... Oh yah, grandad's furniture...oh well.. Basically you yourself would have to take this work on. Everyone else is "too busy" "I wanna get paid" "I'm not just GIVING it away" Etc

👍❤️ Has anyone mentioned to you the plastic view masters that you can put a round disc in, with pictures to view. Also the Nativity Scenes you have found in homes are brought out at Christmas time. If I visited abandon places I would feel compelled to clean and sweep up messes people have made. Is is fascinating to see these abandoned homes. I think Dr’s lead difficult lives and most don’t have much time with their family. Thank you for showing all the wonderful places you are fortunate to visit. From somewhere in Oklahoma.

It has baffled me since i was a small child, Why they would build a house out of a living tree. Despite the chemicals used to try and stall the decaying of the wood, the homes are subjected to Bugs/termites and whatnot.

Even when I got divorced, which i was immensely happy about, I saved my wedding album for our son. I thres everything from our wedding away but I realized it might be important to him one day, and now I know it is. I can't imagine the children not caring...
