Ten years after the owners passed, we go inside and see what remains of this 19th Century mansion. Once the owner of a successful department store a man decided he needed a home, and in 1918 he built it from scratch. The house later fell into the hands of his family when he passed but the disrepair and maintenance was too much to keep up with. Later, those family members passed and the mansion has been sitting vacant ever since. Over the years thieves and looters have overcame the mansion taking and tearing up what they will. We will be entering the homestead and documenting its remaining beauty before it may get any worse.
If you enjoy leave a thumbs up and subscribe for more Abandoned Documentation, thank you for your time and have a good day.

@@andreajuvonen6032 not everyone has an actually family though. Some families are literally just Grandparents Mom, Dad and Child. Everyone’s parents dont always have siblings so if both your parents are rich but both were only children in their families, you have no Aunts, no Uncles and no cousins. Its uncommon but I know someone who’s family is that small so Ik there are people put there with minimal family.

I worked in a small downtown Dayton law firm in the early 1980's, where one of the three partners owned and and lived in this Traxler Mansion at the time with his young family. The owner was an immigration attorney, and his wife Vietnamese, with two young children, and a nanny. At the time, the property was unbelievably beautiful and grand beyond belief, with the third floor being a ballroom. I've always loved this impressive home, which is modeled after the Biltmore House, in NC.; and it's been so sad to see it turn to this state of disrepair as the neighborhood is no longer very desirable but wouldn't it be wonderful to somehow save the home?

I get a family not being able to afford the upkeep on a huge place like that but...they couldn’t sell it? No one wanted it? Like not the city, county or state? That’s too beautiful a building to let rot. That staircase was magnificent. All those beautiful mirrors and not one of them broken. Amazing. No graffiti either. Odd that the family left behind their children’s books and toys. It looked like from the clothing racks on the third floor like maybe a rummage sale had been held at one point. Or did the family run a thrift shop out of there? Interesting. Great video. Loved the poignant music too.

@Anthony Sanford What exactly does the 1619 project have to do with German schools in the 1930s? You do realize that Antifa was around in the 1920s, fire bombing political figures and civilians right? It was the marxists that pushed transgenderism, atheism, and critical theory in the schools during Weimar Germany. The NSDAP was against all of that and won the favor of the people of Germany. Germany was a democracy when Hitler was voted into office; a man that was loved by a majority of the country up through the war. Democrats today have more similarities to the Bolshevik uprising in Russia's 1910s than National Socialist party in the 1930s.

I’ve found myself becoming addicted to these abandoned videos, this home is amazing but sad at the same time. If I could just give a bit of constructive criticism...I’ve noticed you “explorers” are young and know very little about architectural features of homes and of furnishings. I cringe every time I hear false information about items in or a part of the house, which is pretty much every abandoned video I watch. For example, the “main room” is actually a foyer (pronounced for-yay), the “shelf” in the kitchen is a bakers rack, the “office” off the kitchen is a butlers pantry...there are more examples but you get the picture. I’m not at all trying to put your video down, it was great and I really enjoyed it. I just really wish you young explorers would consider taking some history of furnishing or beginning architecture classes, I believe the added knowledge would add enrichment to your videos.

This is such a shame when a beautiful home, filled with antiques btw, has been torn up, destroyed, & turned into a type of hoarders paradise. Lots of 80’s era things (refrigerator, big screen tv-we had both of those)-it’s like “classy antique home meets low end items”. The Yamaha grand piano is itself a valuable item! Idk if this beautiful old gem could be restored. Can you find out any info on why it was deserted, leaving everything behind ? Thanks for sharing. Oh, and: yes, I enjoyed the video, but to see so many beautiful, priceless antiques left unappreciated for mold and mildew to take over, leaves me sad-plus, the WASTE of what was clearly tossed aside should be a crime!

That computer at 11:20 is an Apple ][ Plus Clone, a Franklin Ace 1000 and matching Ace 100 5.25" floppy drives (the 2nd one is behind the boombox, you can see the vents). Those are highly collectible and sought after, I wouldn't be surprised if it still works. The keyboard part IS the whole computer. That Thompson CRT monitor may be either a green phosphor or a white phosphor. You can power the entire setup with a omnicharge (or any portable battery that can supply 120V), to confirm its functionality and run a few AppleSoft BASIC programs. EDIT: Since October, I'm now a proud owner of a Franklin Ace 1000, except mine is a Plus model which integrates the disk drives into a new top case shell. I paired mine with an Amdek amber phosphor monitor.

While it's too bad the place has gone into decay the part most posters don't see is the story behind why. Locally we have several empty homes. One is easy... the people passed on and the kids wont part with the family homestead. OTOH, they at least have the lawn cut so it's not a blight on the area. The other was a case of the owner passing and he has no immediate family so stuck in probate, with the additional issue of a second mortgage that was taken out before the market dropped. On top of that the guy's estate is in serious debt. House went on the market with no buyers, even at reduced price. Eventually the bank will take it, but that will be several more years. The house in this video likely needs a million bucks in repair / renovations so can't make a judgement without knowing the local market value. Might be worth the investment and might not. Sometimes they find that mold has taken over (leaky roof?) and it needs to be bulldozed. Now time for a comment on the video itself... while most empty homes fall into this typical kind of disarray it's always the same personal crap in a time capsule from 10+ years ago. The more interesting aspects to some people will be in the architecture, both inside and outside. (close up shots) If you want to know about the "bones" of an old home you look in places where nothing has changed.... the attic, basement, and even some of the larger closets. This is where nobody ever paints or decorates so usually original to an older house. I have seen coal fired heating systems and even gas light systems in older homes. I have also seen tin ceilings in older barns of rich people's homes. How about laundry rooms for the maids in the era of hand washing clothes? These are the rare gems!

Poor Detroit. It truly is devastating what a great economy they had a booming car industry and the city alone had almost 800,000 people. The majority had great jobs at the factories and the city was so alive. So so sad to have seen (from a distance, I live in Denver) the factories close and people losing jobs they thought they'd have until retirement. Families that could, moved out of Detroit for good, and the rest were left to watch their city turn into a gutted, burned out wasteland of despair as crack took them by storm (along with the rest of the country, but Detroit truly suffered the most lasting damage for it). All it needs is an industry to plant a new seed to bring in jobs which will draw people in and businesses will open and clean up of all the abandoned homes would make room for apartments and houses which creates even more jobs and brings in more people. But most importantly they would need to give assistance to the people who have been left behind whose lives were shattered by the closing of the car manufacturers. They need housing and to be offered treatment from simple counseling to drug and alcohol treatment if they so choose. My heart breaks for Detroit. They have needed a major reset button for far too long.

I love the porte cochere at the entrance. That was an elegant way to enter a home. The wallpaper that's falling from the ceiling was interesting to me too. I read they used to lay out the paper on a flat surface to paint it and then glue it to the ceiling afterward. Sounds like a pain but I guess it's easier than painting those designs directly on the ceiling.

Ok why couldn’t the last surviving family members hire an auction company to get what they could for it before it became uninhabitable? Or was it mortgaged and the bank repossessed it? Something just doesn’t seem right. Not sure what the laws are there but if a property goes years without a tax payment doesn’t the city or county auction it off?

I"m really surprised this building is in the shape it is as it's on the national register for historic places. From the looks of the merchandise upstairs I"m guessing it was one the dept store owner's children who lived there. (they kept the stuff for nostalgic reasons). (or grandchildren but they would hvae been born in the late 40's or possibly 50's). The man died young at 69, in 1977. So I'm guessing one of his children lived there and became hoarders due to his death. The children would have been in their 40's maybe when their dad died.

Thank you for taking the time to go through this home and show much of the architectural detail and opulence this home has especially on the lower floor , though I do believe I saw one or more fireplaces which also would of had some great detail on the lower floor. By the time you got to the top floor guess between the stuff and time crunch for video length you did not do as good of a job with the detail of the home . Like those wooden beams in the room with the bulk of the stuff from the department store I know there is a name for the style those beams are set up , however I can’t remember the name . I would like to add I saw another explorers video of this same home and it was terrible and I was a bit hesitant to watch your video , however you did not disappoint as I mentioned above you gave this home more respect for the detail of the home itself and not paying homage to the junk and other trinkets . I don’t know if this is possible because this home could be caught up in some legal issue whit the government ( local or other ) , however if not I wish someone would buy this place and restore it to its past glory before nature and time have damaged it much further . Wish you would of tried to close that open window to stop nature from getting in further . Thank you for documenting this once beautiful home . I can imagine it having been a one luxury family home filled with love before someone succumbed to miss fortune and depression.

The main stair is the most elaborate feature of the interior. Naturally finished woodwork defines four arches across the back wall of the hall. The stair begins at one side of the room, ascends to an opening beneath the first arch, and turns to continue to the second floor behind the paneling, spindles and fretwork that fills the space beneath the two center arches. The door to the kitchen is beneath the fourth arch. Pocket doors connect the hall to the living and dining rooms at either side and a columned mantel enhances a fireplace on a side wall.

Beautiful house that clearly had cherished memories for almost 100 years (or until it was abandoned). I wonder why it has to just sit there and crumble into nothing. There should be some kind of law that allows it to be auctioned off by the state, but only to be restored not torn down. Those light fixtures and the mirrors are awesome and that stunning furniture in the living room and dining room that all matched and the velvet wasn't even damaged. I love the hand crafted wood throughout but man that banister was breathtaking. It's cool to imagine what it must have been like with a family in it. Sadly it makes me think of the past few years in America. 4 years ago things were safe and content and now our home is falling down around us and we feel totally abandoned.

Your right, just think how many families are living in the streets, would jump at the chance to move in just tell them clean it up a little and you can live there, I am sure you would have people lined up waiting to move in, what a waste, it would be cheaper on the tax payer just to have places like this cleaned up and house them, and not to forget all that close in there that they also could use, it makes me angry to see this kind of waste, only in America.

To be fair, it would probably cost more to get this historic structure up to code rather than completely rebuilding a new home. Excluding the property itself, the structural damage alone would probably cost more to repair the actual homes current value. Obviously, that doesn't answer our homeless problems. However, explains why most historical homes are not simply converted into homes for the needy. It simply costs more to reinforce and refurbish over leveling and rebuilding.
