It's amazing what Mother Nature will do to a car that's left out in the elements. This Nova drag car has been sitting for at least 10 years, and I bought it from my neighbor. It'll make a great entry level drag car, and it was a SUPER QUICK transformation from crusty old abandoned drag car to a somewhat promising drag car project. Follow along as I blast this thing with Super Clean and follow it up with a blast of water from my budget-friendly electric pressure washer.

One of the best investments I ever made was buying an industrial steam cleaner/pressure washer when a truck shop closed down. You can use it as a high pressure spray washer with hot water, or lower pressure with steam. I haven’t had to use any cleaners on old projects since I bought it, just the water/steam alone cleans anything. You do have to be careful that you don’t burn yourself, it gets really hot and it does take up some room in the shop. I put it on a small trailer so it can be taken outside, but the trailer takes up even more room.

Yup agreed, nothing beats the jet wash then some 2500 wet and dry sand paper, finished off with a machine polish. It's no good just cleaning it, that top layer of oxidized paint has got to come off.

This brings back memories. In 1977 I bought a brand new 1977 Chevy Nova. I ordered the same color as this one (Aqua metallic) with a tan interior. The only options I ordered were automatic transmission & power steering (Which was not standard in 1977), and I got the stereo system from another place. Total cost; $4,100. It lasted for 10 years.

I am sure you find plenty of old small block motors. just install a starter small block and cheap trans and give someone a builder that runs! You, your dad, and a Saturday is all you need! I once bought an old street drag car (no cage) from a farmers field. It was a 76 Monza Town Coupe. It had a 72 400 4 bolt from a caprice in it. Was quite the car and I am sad that I had to sell it. Orange with a black vinyl top and never registered as it was used for racing at our local-ish track for lower et (no cage needed) type of stuff. It still had the original comp cams box from 1977 in the trunk lol
@HotRodHoarder
@HotRodHoarder 3 жыл бұрын
That's kinda what we're thinking. Put together a decent small block from some of the parts we've gathered up over the years. We could assemble it without spending a lot of money and it would definitely add value to the car.
@wingerfan1
@wingerfan1 3 жыл бұрын
@@HotRodHoarder I think that would be the easiest choice. I’m sure you guys have a stash of parts even from the period. I have to admit I’ve never been really fond of that body style of car or the 1973-1977 ElCaminos. But it would definitely not take you very long to throw together a small block and shove it in there. Would love to see the project come to fruition.

Just landed on your channel via the ‘87 K5 you painted. Always have a soft spot for Novas. Pretty sure I was made on prom night of ‘84 in a ‘69 Nova lol. Your sentiments on the electric power was are the same as mine. Love my SunJoe one I got from Amazon for about $90-100. If you haven’t, check out a surface cleaner for it for doing concrete and flat surfaces. Real handy. I also did a foam cannon as well a curved lance tip for spraying underneath vehicles. The real beauty of electric washers are you can put a kid of about 8+ on it and set em loose. Enjoy your content sir and I’m subscribed and combing through your videos now.

Also I picked up a ‘79 K5 that had about the same crust on it as this Nova. I used the super clean in the big jug put into spray bottles. Sprayed and let soak for about an hour then hit it with the power washer. That thing is rough but it has better factory coat than my ‘88 has. Luckily the ‘85 M1009 Blazer I picked up was repainted. If you can’t tell I’m a K5’r lol. Must be why KZbin suggested your K5 repaint to me. I’m thinking about doing the same to my ‘88 in all white until I get time and a shop built to do it high dollar back in the white and red 2-tone it is now.

SuperClean is good stuff, I’ve used it for a long time but I would suggest using gloves. I got into it one time too many and started having a reaction to it. I had used it on my 3/4ton diesel pick-up and 5th wheel trailer on Friday and Saturday morning I woke up with red, burning, itchy hands and feet (I was wearing flip-flops while working with it). It got pretty bad and I went to the doctor and it he called it dishydrosis. I’ve never had a reaction to anything, soaps or medicines or food but apparently it’s possible to develop a sensitivity to something like this if you contact it too often or too much at one time. I still use it but I wear shoes, thin rubber gloves, and pay attention to the wind so I don’t breath the spray. The best plan is to not “overdose” on it in the first place and avoid the hassle of a reaction.

Nice find! I had a 77 Nova Hatchback as my first car. Loved it! I drove that car for over 10 years. I do know pretty much everything about the 5th gen Nova. This one here has the 75-76 grill. That 8.5 rear IS factory equipment. They never put a 7.5 in these cars. The 7.5 come out in the "metric" years starting in 1978 into the g body (Malibu, Regal, Cutlass, Monte Carlo.)
@HotRodHoarder
@HotRodHoarder 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, I had no idea! Very cool that it came with the 8.5. I assumed GM had already made the switch to the dinky rear end. I noticed the early grille when I was trying to figure out the year of the car (before I looked at the numbers). Thanks for the info!
@NovaResource
@NovaResource 2 жыл бұрын
A couple of corrections. First, the grill in that car is a 1975 grille. 1976 thru 1978 all has the same “standard” grille. There were other grilles those years (SS, Rally, Concours, Custom). Second, the 7.5” rear absolutely was used in 4th gen Novas (1975-79). Mostly in 6-cylinder applications but also in some 305 equipped Novas.

Lot's of potential, i'd go on jegs and purchase 4 drag wheels from them, they are very affordable and it would afd so much value to vehicle. That super clean stuff works great the only thing is ya can't leave it on for too long or it will almost strip paint. God bless.
