I think this era is going to be regretted. Modern architecture is soul-less and totally devoid of any character. You used to be able to look at a photo and name the city. Not any more. Houses now look like factory units. You used to be able to look at a photo of a street and recognise it as being typical for a certain suburb. Not any more.

What a lifeless city Sydney is now. I worked near that location in the 90's and it was always bustling then.

Skinners Family Hotel build 1845 & a hotel until 1873. Many uses since then & Heritage listed 1999. The reason the corner building is staying. Makes the corner look nice.

This reason did not save The Royal Oak Hotel in Parramatta which was even older . Just ask Phil !

Hunter Street used to be one of the last decent loading zone spots for us making deliveries. Now that's taken away, along with Pitt St loading zones turned into bike lanes, looks like city businesses won't be receiving supplies for much longer 😢

That corner building used to be a pub (or Hotel as they were called) . Hasn’t sold alcohol in a very long time.

Wow, thanks. Worked on 10th Floor 300 George St from 1982-1993, that building next to the old pub on the corner, all but gone.

The corner building was a hotel called the Metropolitan. The hotel had a public bar and the top floor was a fine dining restaurant. My father worked there in the 1970s. It was very grand.

Is anyone old enough to remember a huge toy store in St Leonards called Uncle Tony's?! They were very well known in the 1980s....
@murraykitson14362 ай бұрын
It sounds familiar, but I do remember the bowling alley and the Alderson Building with the revolving Mercedes sign on the roof . Another niche institution was the 729 club in Lithgow Street whose members were people involved in the television industry , hence the name was derived from the channels 7 2 and 9 . Channel 10 did not exist until about 1965 so wasn't included in the name of this club which was originally in Crows Nest . I recently had an early appointment at RNSH ( hospital) so while I was filling in time at St Leonards Station , I looked down Lithgow Street to reminisce then looked at my phone ... the time just happened to be 729 ! Quite spooky . 😳

I hope they pick something more exciting than Hunter Street Station, which would be so out of place among Central, Gadigal, Town Hall, Museum etc. I can't stand stations named after roads.

I lived and worked in Sydney from 1964 until moving to Canberra in 1984. Even when in the ACT I would visit Sydney city (the CBD and some suburbs) for work until 1993. The city centre would be a strange location to me now, with very little remaining from my years in the place. I really have no wish to visit it these days.

Isn't the Hunter St Connection where the hidden GPO is? I'm not talking about the old GPO building which is now a luxury hotel but the parcel and letters pick up ppint ( no post office counter) . I stumbled upon this GPO collection point by mistake taking a wrong turn under tge Hunter Connection. Maybe I''m thinking about the wrong building.
