This is one of the most legit "barn finds" there is. This lincoln sat untouched for 22 years. Im going to see if I can get it running and drive it home 650 miles!

These cars were produced when Ford Gm and Chrysler were finding ways to scale down their luxury line. Caddie made the Seville, from the Nova platform. Ford made these Lincoln from the Ford Granada line and Chrysler made their New Yorker on the Volare platform. All of these lower line platforms became personal luxury cars by using the same low-line running gear, but sprucing them up with great interiors and making all the power equipment formerly available in the big full-size luxury line now in these vastly reduced-in-size models. If you knew that under all that fancy interior and wheels it was still a Ford Granada. This was a brilliant example of what this brave mechanical genius who isn't afraid to take risks does for fabulous content on KZbin. This guy is something else. Another great video.
@MrSloika
@MrSloika 2 ай бұрын
The Seville was constructed on the Nova's 'hard points' which cut down on tooling costs, but the Seville shared very little in common with the Nova. The Versailles was just a tarted-up Granada. My father owned a Granada and looking at the interior of this thing brought back some bad memories. Ford should have been ashamed for selling such a thing. The only car I would rate worse as an example of shameless marketing was the Cadillac Cimarron.

OK, I like them too, and VG is amazing on getting a bucket started...but once you determine it's good enough to revive and clean up, then do all the overdue maintenance - oil, trans, carb, brakes, fuel sys, and give the car some respect. Good golly, and old filter could disintegrate and clog passages killing oiling to the the whole engine....geesh, and a full maintenance is not that tough

I saw a few of your other videos. I got partnership in a gas station arriving home from Nam, did a ton of car mechanical work, one fellow left and I had 1 partner. I spoke with the parts store owner who was retiring with his wife back to Jamaica. Dad got me a loan to move to the store, inside, no cold, making much more money, and many customers from the station followed me to my auto parts store working on their cars on the weekend so I had a ton of customers in a little tiny town in Northern NJ. I loved working on cars with dad at home, my parts store and had a delivery truck out delivering to shops also. The garage in back hd room for a drum lathe, axel bearing press, and a nice disc brake lathe. I did a lot of brake, axel, and tune up work using my own parts and customers loved my quality parts & work. Car dealership liked me as well and the entire loan was paid off in ONE YEAR!!! I love seeing you contend with these cars and you are a real nice feller and I hope to see many more. I just watched the rest of the Lincoln Versailles story and prayed you got er home. I now make language courses and am 76 having a great life. I have friends in Tennessee in Blue Buck Valley near route 100?? near Centreville, TN. Many years ago they gifted me with a bran new Learning BIBLE and I never forget that day. Carol & KP Tucker. I built them a great computer before I retired from the businesses in NJ and moved to Florida near the central gulf. So I have customers who buy from me yet in lovely Tennessee! Bless you heart young fella and thank you so much for sharing these videos as I know it is a lot of additional work besides what you do. Again thank you soooo much! They cost like an ordinary "used" car. That´s not bad as long as you don´t need spare parts. These are unavailabe here and have to be ordered from U.S. Importing an American car also presents ridiculous administrative hurdles. The rules here are beyond strict. Derek, this video rally brought back the memories. I was selling Fords and Lincolns in the late 70's and actually drove a brand new Versailles as a demo for a few weeks. It was a very tough sell, we didn't sell many. It was a dressed up Granada, made in the same way that Cadillac dressed up a Cavalier to be a Cimarron. If you still have the car, check out the hood. It's aluminum. Both the Cimarron and the Versailles were total flops. It drove ok, but never was considered a real Lincoln. Thanks for the video it took me way back to 1978. I was much younger then.

I don't know how many takes you make or how the jokes and puns are planned, but it does feel like it is mostly spontaneous and that is what is great about you. You are genuine. That A/C being functional and cold is unbelievable ! Yeah the clutch went bye bye, but the fact that the polar gas didn't escape is impressive. That engine runs so well, I bet it would't take much to free some poneys out of it. Since the transmission is on it's last leg, would be cool to see that heart maybe go into one of the F100 you got. A very cool find. Brief history of the car. The Versailles was Lincoln's answer to the Cadillac Seville, which was a wildly popular "small" Cadillac. Lincoln used the Ford Granada as the car's base, and it showed. Customers saw right through the upgrade and sales were lackluster from the start, ending with only a few thousand production units by the end of its run. It has a lot of engineering improvements, such as available 4-wheel disc brakes (anti-lock in the rear), a 9-inch posi rear axle (Mustang guys pull them the second the cars hit a junk yard), and a not-so-great 2-bbl variable venturi carburetor. It's amazing the car ran all that way without a hitch, a testament to the engineering that, regrettably, wasn't matched by the stylists effort. Oh, and as part of the ad campaign, they photographed the Versailles on the floor of Windows on the World, the restaurant at the top of the World Trade Center. You can still find the ad if you Google it (or look on ebay).

My dad changed the venti carb and electronic ignition on mines to a four barrel Holley and old school points distributor. I remember vividly back in 1992 I was doing a tune up on it...had just replaced the set of points. The car was idling while I was washing my hands with the garden hose. I heard a "hiccup" and immediately went to adjust the distributor...with wet hands. ZAAAPPPP!!! 😂 My arm went dead for about ten minutes. I was hollering like a banshee and my dad was laughing his a** off. I miss having that car.

Quite a challenge and an adventure to start a car that has been stationary for a long time and make it go a good distance! Really fun to solve all the problems until you reach the destination. And it is really surprising how the lights, the air conditioning, the horn, etc. end up working. That wouldn't happen with a modern car. Before everything was done better. Keep Walking!
