That is actually not only science fiction. Red light is harder to spot than "white" light. Thats btw. the reason why they use red light in SWAT vehicles :)

Mar tin red light also does not disrupt a humans night vision( once the eyes have adjusted to the dark) meaning that for example the swat team can travel to an incident at night and be able to look at maps,documents or make last minute adjustments to their kit and then step out into the dark and their eyes need little to no time to readjust to the light levels hence improving the units effectiveness

No, night vision. A white flashlight would make it more difficult for the human eye to adapt to the dark, outside of looking where the beam is.
