The Volvo factory built these generations of vehicles by hand. Everything fitted and adjusted just so by vary talented and loyal technicians. All the mechanicals were assembled and tested with no quality defects allowed. If maintained properly, you may have a 1 million mile survivor on your hands! Please don’t cheap out on parts.

To some level I would agree that the low mileage has something to do with it working so good, but it is mostly because of the quality. It is not my favourite make, even though I have one right now, I've just always known it to be solid and reliable! 15:25 the plate is a phenolic spacer, it IS required, it prevents the fuel from boiling into the pump and vapor locking. Without the spacer it'll vapor lock at idle/slow city driving. It did that too on my B21 Volvo redblock (the OHC version of that mill) Also without the spacer is pushes the arm outside of it's travel and can damage the pump too !

Sump plug = ring wrench, and always put the fuel filter before the fuel pump it saves the pump failing from crud, volvo recomend mercon type ATF for the su dashpots. Also if the fluid is burning off through the intake then the needle seal is leaking and needs replacing.

WHOOO boy! you WAAY overfilled those Su Dashpot pistons! when filling them you are supposed to fill the inner piston sleeve to a little below the top of that, not the top of the dashpot itself xD It helps to lift the piston to the top to fill them

I once owned a 122 Volvo, such a solid car, the way the doors shut can't be matched, like this one. Same engine as this one. It will serve you well as long as you love it.

Man I'm jealous. That thing is MINT! VP Autoparts is in SC, and they specialize in a lot of old Volvo stuff, might be able to help you out with some of those parts (I did a quick search on their site and didn't find the specific linkage bushings, but I may not have been looking in the right place). I know they've been helping David Bello with his 164 resurrection project, and I believe have contacts overseas to help with sourcing and/or recreating OE parts that have been NLA for decades. Aside from that, it's really just junkyards and word-of-mouth to find what you need. But there's a surprising number of Volvo people around. I mentioned David Bello earlier, he's made a lot of friends all over the country recently, and might be able to point you in the direction of certain parts if need be. Good luck, that thing is amazing!

I used to love my 1971 Volvo 145 Estate (wagon) automatic, weekends it towed my car trailer with oval track hot rods on it all over England, and In the week it was the family 5 seater.. Volvos from earlier designed a fail safe braking system where If one brake line blew out you still had 70% braking on 3 wheels, 2 front and 1 rear google It... Volvo designed shock absorbing bumpers years before many other car makers also.. Now many years later after seeing your 145 my love for them has come back again. OH. 145 stands for !st series, 4 cylinders 5 doors/ the next generation were 245.. Thanks for your videos - Ian - UK.

Volvo back in the 1960’s had a good reputation of quality. Then simple strong machines. The world has changed since these cars were New. No computer control. The few fuel injected cars were mechanical fuel injection. Electric timing devise were sold as add one. Points and condensers were the norm. My first car was a BMW 1600. No power steering . It had only 6 fuses on the car.

G'day from Australia, had lot of SU carbs back in the day, we never overfilled the oil gallery on the carbs just enough to have a little bit of resistance on the needle slide otherwise it made it run like a dog! And never put heavy weight oil in them, we used very thin oil like singer sowing machine oil. Love the channel keep up the great work. Very enjoyable......

Those towers on the carbs are called dashpots and the sliding internal components are called pistons. Yes, you top them up with something like 30-40 engine oil. On cars that have sat for a while, the pistons sometimes stick due to internal corrosion. Not a big problem. You just remove the two screws holding the dashpot and polish the insides. Great work :)

Hello from the UK. I have had Volvos mostly all my life. I started with 144 then a 164 (withjust short of 1 milliom miles on the clock) right up to my 10th V70. Due to age and bad eyes I have just given up driving at 70. My last Volvo I had was the mighty V70R which was played with up to 400BHP. Anything you need to know join the Volvo owners club worldwide. I recall a friend of mine that knew Volvos up and down at that time, and he said they were broken in at 100, 000 miles. They would easily get more than 200,000 miles on them with routine maintenance.

Lovely car. Such good base to build from. Check out the Simon Stallenhag artwork. He features them in. Very cool now. In the 1980’s and 90’s everyone wanted rid of them. In the 2000’s there was none left. 20 years later everyone’s starting to see the cool look. Dead slow, flat engine. Looks good though. I’d love one.

There are many Volvo fans that would bring the 145S to "as new" condition. I had a 142S (1969), and it was a great car. I still remember just how good the Heater performed, in the middle of winter. You should still be able to buy original Volvo parts for the car. It definitely deserves saving. I would fit a Pertronix electronic ignition. The engine performs much better after this cheap refinement, and no more points gap to set - ever!

Thank you for getting this one going. I've never been a huge Volvo fan, but I'm a sucker for station wagons, and I love seeing people revive cars that your average entry level collector would ignore. There are too few cars like this being saved, and that car is in fantastic condition. I wouldn't even drive that one much. There can't be that many unrestored cars like that out there in such great condition with such low mileage. These aren't like muscle cars. People didn't just buy them and park them, so there can't be that many low mileage examples out there. That interior looks almost new. I would definitely get in touch with some Volvo people and see what kind of interest you can drum up. That car should be preserved.

The 140 and 240 Series Volvo were built at the Volvo factory here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I purchased a new 1971 145 Station Wagon and had very few problems in the 3 years I owned the car.

I am not surprised about the easy start. Own a car with the same engine. Been in storage for the last 25 years and always fires up even with several years between each attempt. Never replaced fuel pump or points.

I recently bought a 240 wagon that made that exact noise you are getting from the drive train. To save you some time it was the driveshaft centre bearing. Pop the drive shaft out. Press old bearing off, install the new one and noise gone. Love the car btw, my Grandma bought one brand new in 1970 just the same as the one on this video, even the same color. Its still in the family and going well!!

Looks like it is in very good condition. The wrench that you are using for the drain plug is actually called svensknøgle in Danish, translated to English It's a swedish key. So perfect for a swedish car.

It should be easy to get a new ignition switch and keys, or a used one - this car is SUCH a classic. Might not be cheap, will take a while of course.

I've owned both a '70 and a '69, like yours, except mine were all manual 4 speeds. Both of those years also had the rear side windows that opened, too. They're truly one of the finest engineered cars ever built, IMHO. If ever get a chance to drive a stick shift, you'll experience a whole new level of fun. I have not watches the whole series yet, but I will. I hope that you changed the timing belt very quickly. The B20 if I recall correctly did not do well with broken timing belts. The later B23 was a non interference engine.

My friend who lived across the street's mom had one of these back in the mid-late 70s. Puke green, black interior. It died in the 80s, but as far as I know they kept it stored for years after that in the back. First time I saw it, I was like "what kinda car is that?" He said "a VoVo!" A VoVo?? 😂 We were like 5.

Damn what a nice find! The only problem is the engine brake/fuel slurperer that some call an automatic gearbox! It´s more of an engine brake since 50-75% of the power is magically lost in it and about 50-75% more fuel is needed to drive the car.

Wow, did this bring back memories. Back around 1977, I bought a 1970 Volvo 145 automatic exactly like this one for $400. I named it "Ernest Lee Sincere" and kept it for around 10 years as a spare car and loaner for friends and family. Besides reliable transportation, with the rear seat folded down you could carry a surprising amount of stuff (including a full-size garden tiller).
