In the late 50’s, the city fenced the zoo off, hired professional zoo staff and started charging admission. The bear dens were the oldest part of the park and were falling into disrepair so they were left outside the fence line and basically left to rot. The entire zoo is located in the city of Boston itself. It was also used in the move “Mystic River”.

That second staircase you walked up with the two bear stone carving is in the movie Mystic River. That swimming hole right below is where the dead daughter is found!

Sad, no grass , no trees, just a concrete existence. I don't understand that the folks seeing animals in the natural wild put them into an unnatural environment.

Should check out the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. Went there last year and half of what used to be there is abandoned. I believe the reptile house might be being renovated but I could be wrong. The old polar bear pool (now abandoned) can even be seen on an episode of the Simple Life!

At least they seemed to be big enough. Wonder what the environment was like with pools, trees to scratch on, toys or items to help with boredom. Thank ood it is a relic and no longer used.

Here in Sydney there was a zoo before the current Taronga zoo. The only thing remaining of the old zoo are two bear pits, one now within the grounds of a girls school and the other in the grounds of a boys school. Not sure why they left them and tore down everything else

Looks like an abandoned prison but for bears. For some reason, I feel as if there was plenty of sad bears in there trying to survive just to entertain the selfish.

Pretty big miss to not mention that an intense scene of the movie 'Mystic River' was filmed here. The bear cages is where Katie's body is found and her father, Jimmy, comes running up those concrete steps where several cops struggle to hold him back as he loses his mind. Great acting by Sean Penn took place in that very park in places that you stood and filmed. Should have acknowledged it, Chris...

We had bear dens in the town lake park I grew up in. The bears hadn't been there since the late 1920's, but there was no local zoo. I have no idea why they were where they were. They couldn't have been happy. I think I can show you some pictures, but not here. Feel free to email me! Thanks for another great video!

Point and case for why I generally dislike Zoos and Circuses keeping large, wild possibly exotic animals. Its just not possible to give them an adequate life. And when you look at these very old installations, all you can see is a miserable existence behind bars...

we have something similar here from the 30's, old bear cages from an old zoo along the river. the stone building above them is now a restaurant but the old cages are still below it,

To me its sad. I dont like animals in cages, so us humans can walk by and gawk at them and then go merrily on our way while they are left behind, caged. 😢 Thank you for the video, Chris. If those rock walls could talk, we might be disturbed by what we heard them say. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, I'm just not a fan of zoos anymore.
