In 1719 in Falu Koppargruva (copper mine) in Sweden, a dead man was found over 150 meters down into the mine. He was not recognized by any of the miners or the foremen, and the rumor soon spread in Mora. One woman, a Margareta Olsdotter, got a look at the dead man and cried out "That's my Mats!". Mats was bethoed to Margareta Olsdotter in the past, but had gone missing in the mine 42 years earlier and wasn't found until now. The remarkable thing is that he was so well preserved that you'd think that he had just tied a few days ago. The copper sulfate in the mine had preserved his body in a remarkable condition, he still looked young and handsome, while his was-to-be wife had aged. He was put on display for many years until he finally was put to rest in the local church. The story of Fet-Mats can be found online, but probably only in Swedish. Thought I would share this here, some might find it interesting.

Went caving once. "Spelunking" they called it. Started with a repel into a space that could fit the Statue of Liberty, about 305'. Very Cool. Once at the bottom we entered the shafts. Halfway thru, I started thinking: "All the way down here, about how many of hundreds/thousands of tons of Earth between me and the surface?" NEVER DOING IT AGAIN. It was an Excellent experience. I also went caving into an old mine once and it was an awesome experience and would 100% do it again. At one point the people in front of me had walked so fast they had disappeared and the people behind me had walked so slow that they also disappeared. It was just me with my headlamp walking through a tunnel that was filled one foot deep with water. It was scary but also thrilling at the same time. It gave me a chance to experience what it would actually be like getting lost in that cave alone and that would be terrifying. We also reached a huge room and all sat down and turned our lights off. It was just pitch black darkness. Nothing like on the surface.

So, no need to learn illustrator, continue to explore, discover and entertain us. By the way - wouldn’t it be cool if a camera had the technology to record elevation tracking. Back in the 70's I did work as a geological surveyor in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. One of my duties was to keep my eyes open for undocumented vertical shafts. Many of them where partially filled/blocked by forest debris. Was pretty unnerving taking a step and feeling the ground start to give way. Found quite a few of them along with exploratory trenches. Some of the adits I came across impressed on me why life expectancy was so short back then. They worked themselves to death.

A few pieces of shaft anatomy: Collar: The structure placed at or in the near vicinity of the mouth of the shaft. Consists of a heavy collar set that is resting on sills that extend 4 to 8 feet beyond the timbers at the end plates dividers. The collar is bolted to the sills and the first set of hanging bolts is attached. DIagonals are often used and the area around the first set is filled with waste rock. The first 5 to 10 sets in the shaft are usually of this heavier duty timbers. You can see an example at 0:41. Shaft Set: This consists of Wall Plates, End Plates, and Dividers. These have a lot of design into them and fit together in a precise manner to give support to the shaft walls. These are the horizontal timbers that "ring" the shaft. Once each set is in place the hanging bolts are used to support the next set down. Oregon pine or Yellow Pine were two common types of wood for shaft sets. Studdles: The vertical timbers between each shaft set spacing them out. They also give additional support to the ground. Practice in the Butte (summit valley) district was to also place these on dividers for additional strength and stiffness to the sets. Bearers: Starting at the collar and at intervals of 50 to 100 feet these are placed below end plates and dividers to help bear the weight of the sets below. The shaft will typically have a larger width to allow the setting of these timbers. Lagging: the boards used to line the compartments. These were commonly used in all but the hardest rock to prevent minor rockfall and cave ins from the shaft walls. Guides: The long vertical timbers in the hoisting compartment. Presence of these implies use of a crosshead if bucket hoisting was used, or a cage/skip otherwise. The ladders in the manway rest on lagging that may be referred to as floors or platforms depending on where you are at. The methods of constructing shaft sets and how they are blocked can tell you where the person who did it was trained or came from. Small shafts (single compartment) may be cribbed without formal shaft sets. These are of small cross section. The shaft here is probably sunk on the hanging wall of the vein and punches through the vein. That is likely where you see the bowed and broken wall plates below the first door in the shaft. that covered the manway and hoisting compartment. The lack of levels above that point suggests either that it is in country rock or that the shaft was retimbered and any levels were blocked up so you cant see them. "Cartridges" basically is interchangeable with "sticks" for explosives in this context. so that was an explosives box. The keg was most likely nails or other supplies. If for some odd reason black powder was being used, it would be made into cartridges on surface. Id love to see the surface at the shaft collar to see what we have there.

I'm still scratching my head at how all those animals wound up falling down that shaft. It's not that they were in there, but they were so far in, down the adit all that way before they even came to the shaft. No food in there and rock face, not den or burrow material. And the skeletons were mostly whole so I guess no one was eating any of them. Great video and interesting mine. De. serves to be almost 4 million views

I love how our narrator is all gear up while his friend is literally in Jeans, a t-shirt, and a bike helmet

When the intro started I thought cool this should be interesting. 10 sec later he drops down on his belly and crawls into that crack. Ah hell no!! What a perfectly dug mine though once you got inside. Amazing the amount of work people did in there.

Do you think it might've been a bad idea not to wear a mask or respirator going into that shaft?

A year later and I'm wondering the same thing. Not only can that be dangerous with unknown (or possibly known) toxins, but legit the deceased animals *could not* have smelled like springtime down there. 🤢

Been living in Nevada for 32 yrs. Back in 1991 open mine portals were everywhere. Without proper knowledge I only ventured into one about 50 yrs. The media in southern NV was very persistent about the potential dangers inside. Yours vids are Awesome. Your knowledgable about these mines. Thanks for taking us deep into these places that I could never be bold enough to explore. 🤟👍
