On Mercedes, if you hold down left (downshift) paddle shifter while cruising, it will automatically select the best gear for overtaking (passing). But keep in mind, it will go into manual mode and you will have to shift up if necessary! For example you are cruising at 1600RPM, there is a vehicle in front of you and you wait for the perfect moment to overtake, hold down left paddle shifter and gearbox will select gear around 3000-4000RPM (depends on engine Diesel or Petrol), of you are ready to go. Tested on Mercedes C class 220D (S205 2015)

Huge tip for winter driving: when in snowy conditions and at a complete stop, shift into 2nd gear. You will minimize torque when you hit the gas and have a smoother take off.

From years of experience driving on snow and ice with Nisan GTR35 and MB GLS63, I've found it much safer to just using "slippery" mode than using manual mode. In fact, it may be dangerous downshifting in slippery conditions as the sudden deceleration may trigger a slide.

@ABAUTOAMG
@ABAUTOAMG 9 ай бұрын
If it's a Mercedes it will be because the car goes into a temporary manual mode when you use the paddles. If you have an AMG it will have a full manual mode button (normally a little cog icon) if you don't have an amg you can normally still go full manual mode but you have to create a individual driving config. In individual mode set transmission from D to M. Hope this all helps!

Continuous downshifting for engine braking while super fun and efficient for braking, it also generates high stress on the engine and over time, can cause high oil pressure and therefore oil leaks. Use it but don’t abuse it. Been there done that.

Nice video! I am fairly new to owning a Mercedes as well. I got a steal a year ago and purchase my 2012 C250 coupe for 14k off an elderly couple who hardly drove it as they couldn't get in and out of it lol. Well, it was loaner car from Gilbert AZ. So I'm the second owner...No regrets what's so ever! I'm glad I started off with an entry level Mercedes. Maintenance is actually pretty cheap on this one. I've been a little hesitant in fully flooring it while shifting paddles. I just started playing with it more and watching videos like this encourages me not to be scared to put my engine and transmission to work.

Hi, interesting about the emotion start, my gla45s only only does so when the car warmed up, not cold start or any time. Is it normal? 🤔
@ABAUTOAMG
@ABAUTOAMG 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Lam, Yep this is normal on the 45s. It's because the M139 engine has a safety system to limit it till temps are up. There's a little blue icon top right of the digital dash, If that's there it means the temps are not high enough and It will actually limit the cars power. I tried it and it's amazing how slow it felt compared to normal. I'm guessing this applies sadly to emotion start. Otherwise I'd do it every startup! :(

Instead of Engine breaking which I presume uses more fuel as your engine is revving higher, why not just pre-empt when you to need to slow down and take your foot of the accelerator early. Uses a lot less fuel.

I'm waiting for delivery of a Merc with one of these gearboxes and I have a question. I've always had manuals before, and when on the motorway in a car with decent torque, I often squeeze the accelerator hard without shifting down, if the in gear acceleration is sufficient for the occasion. Is it possible to make one of these gearboxes not downshift when you press the pedal hard, if you don't want it to?
@ABAUTOAMG
@ABAUTOAMG 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, in full auto mode the car will very quickly downshift under hard acceleration depending on the gear and drive mode. In comfort mode it will be more likely to hold the gear while sport+ will quickly downshift to third gear. But in full manual paddle mode you will be able to hold the gear as you accelerate similar to your current manual. If your car doesn't have a manual button you should still be able to set up a full manual mode in the individual config. Hope this all helps :)

7:36 Higher gear for snow? I always use lower gear for the snow. It gives the tires more power and more traction need on slick roads.
@ABAUTOAMG
@ABAUTOAMG 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on your tyre setup and power. Traditionally its taught to use a higher gear for less immediate power since more power can lead to more spin and loss of control. For example if you were to run on ice from a standing spot your more likely to slip than if you were to walk away slowly. Same thoughts with launching a car in the snow. The more power that goes to the wheels on a slippery surface has mucdevastating tating results if grip is lost which is more likely on a slippery surface.
@Jumpsuit13HEYPEOPLETHISISMYURL
@Jumpsuit13HEYPEOPLETHISISMYURL 3 жыл бұрын
lower gear-more torque and power, higher gear-less torque and power, if the ground is slick you want less torque and power to the wheels because youll be less likely to break the wheels loose and lose traction
@JorisLinssen
@JorisLinssen 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with ABAUTO and Jumpsuit. Furthermore, braking in the snow is better than downshifting gears to lose speed. Downshifting only slows down the powered wheels and that's usually only two of the four. Braking is done via all wheels and locking is prevented by ABS. Much better...

Yes, I must play with them more (especially the next time is snows in Queensland 😎), but… at my age, manually changing 9 gears seems like way to much hard work and the Sport + setting is already enough fun for being immature with . Seriously, thanks for the advice and overview .

I can't find paddle shifter extensions for 2017 C63s coupe for less than $250. I see the knock aftermarket ones for the sedan for real cheap, like $50 or below but for some reason the ones for the coupe are all really expensive... Does the sedan actually use different paddle shifters than the coupe? Also, engine braking does cause wear on your trans and engine. I was a master automotive technician for 9 years and also an engine builder. An auto school we learned about engine braking and yes while it was common practice in the old days the way new engines and transmissions are built and the way they mate to each other is not the same as it used to be. Engine braking does cause faster wear on your transmission and it also causes your transmission oil to heat up and break down faster. I have taken apart many transmissions and motors and seen the direct result of engine braking. It's not catastrophic and when done properly it's okay every now and then but it will increase wear.

Hey mate sorry for the slow reply. Working through lots of comments this month. The Sedan should use the exact same paddle shifters as the coupe so it shouldn't be a problem. Beware the prices vary a lot on these because people mostly drop ship them straight from China, some for large profits. Generally all the same stuff re-packaged. If your still struggling to find a pair let us know and I can help :)

If you drive a lamborghini and use both paddles at the same time the transmission puts you into neutral so you can rev up the engine. Thats basically how every showcar makes loud sounds without accelerating

I have a burble tune on my 2017 C300 Coupe. I notice that when I go from Gear 3 to 2, I let go of the gas and then downshift for the pops, but sometimes i see that it keeps popping lol. is there a way to stop the continuous popping? Should i just slow down and let off the gas or down shift to gear 1?

What a great tips and tricks video! I have always been a VW owner for many yrs and all have been manual gear boxes. Just recently I purchased my first ever AMG A35 . Ok it’s a step on the first run of the ladder of an AMG. I have had the car a few months now but always kept the car in automatic mode. I’m basically worried about using manual mode as fear of messing up my gears or doing damage without realising it . I do believe some makes and models will get you out of trouble should you select wrong gearing by automatically going back into auto mode. This however I believe isn’t available on the Mercedes range. I know I’m excessively worried about using manual but as stressed I don’t want to put stress on the engine if ever I did something silly. Any advice would be really appreciated thank you 😊

Hey Paul, not to worry! It can be intimidating at first especially since there's so many gears! I own a CLA45s now and I am going to be doing a full in-depth guide to safely and effectively using the paddles using the CLA45s. It will hopefully be really helpful if your a A35 owner. il admit though I've not started filming this yet but I really want to put it together this year. Lot's of videos in the works but I know a lot would like to see this one. Great choice by the way with the A35, even though they aren't as powerful and full on as the main AMG's It's still a crackling car, very underrated! Hope you are enjoying it.

@@ABAUTOAMG thank you for the reply it’s always appreciated. I did originally have my heart set on an AMG A45s. But unfortunately I was dreaming as they are well out of my budget, but as you stated the A35 is a good car even if it’s down on power. Personally for me stepping out of a VW into a Mercedes it’s like night and day. Although the VW has some premium touches the Mercedes is certainly streets ahead.

If you hold the upshift paddle then yes it will go back into automatic mode, but if you hold the downshift paddle then it will not go into automatic mode, it will actually skip as many gears as necessary to get into the lowest gear possible at your current speed. So say I'm in 8th gear going at 50mph, if I hold the downshift paddle then the car will drop to 5th gear and then eventually 3rd gear.
@ABAUTOAMG
@ABAUTOAMG 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks btp589 that's useful to know! I've only ever used up paddle to swap between modes so I wasn't aware the down paddle had this feature to jump to lowest gear! All good stuff! :)
@BN99239
@BN99239 3 жыл бұрын
@@ABAUTOAMG Yes, holding downshift paddle is awesome. Holding it for about 1 second will skip a bunch of gears to get you into the right powerband. Holding it down for even longer will downshift you all the way into the lowest gear possible, but it's sometimes too high and is out of the powerband, I think this is mainly if you want to slow down via engine braking.

@@BN99239 In my AMG e63s (and probably several other mercs), if you need a quick downshift (for say, roundabouts), you can hold in the downshift, and then slam the accellerator all the way in, ant the car will rapidly downshift to the lowes possible gear. But another neat trick (though I rearly use it) for those inclined to stay in automatic mode, is to rather quickly just tap the accelerator all the way to the bottom (and release quickly again), and that will also trigger a rapid downshift to the lowest gear possible, which will last for a few seconds. The latter is also practical for certain roundabouts, corners etc:)

You’d probably want to be in a higher gear depending on how fast your going then you could drop gears to slow down and brake depending on how fast you need to stop
