The " Come Taste the Band" album with 🎸 Guitarist Tommy Bolin replaced Blackmore for their last of the 70's ? If not check " Dealer" . Let me know you're thoughts ! I love Bolin and that album is way too overlooked. For me 🔥 start to finish. Not comparing with MKII Purple which I also love. It's just different.

I wonder if you're familiar w DP's '60s work? Specifically, 'THE BOOK OF TALIESYN'... similar sound sonically, but completely different vibe. It was, loosely, a concept album, based on the legend of King Arthur- according to some legends, Taliesyn was a Welsh wizard/mystic & advisor to the king. Most of the songs contain references to the kingdom, & there's an overlay of mysticism! I recommend 'Listen, Learn, Read On' to start! (BTW, the album is very 'weed-friendly'- LOL!)

This album was recorded over 3 nights in Japan - no overdubs - the album is reckoned to be one of the best live albums of all time. This was the show opener- as a singer myself you try not to overstrain at the start of a concert - you need to warm up the vocal cords - later in the show Gillan hits the highs. As Gillan states Purple were (and still are) an instrumental band with added vocals.

Great live sound. Frenetic tempo, pure rock n roll, but they somehow make it look easy.

Gillan was actually sick during the recording of the Japan concerts. Still you would not notice it theoughout the concert and in fact he always sang the highway star this way after it was released. He would definitely be able to sing it higher if he chose so…

"Made in Japan" is one of the greatest rock live albums. Also great are in my opinion "Rainbow" - "Rainbow On Stage", "Thin Lizzy" - "Live & Dangerous", "Led Zeppelin" - "The Song Remains The Same", "UFO" - "Strangers In The Night",.... Enjoy!

Made in Japan is my #1 and UFO Strangers in the Night is my #2. There’s a gap between them and my next group of live albums, which include Mott the Hoople Live, Grand Funk Live, David Bowie Live from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium 10-20-1972.

Aah the music I grew up with, everyone of them outstanding musicians. One of the best organists of all time, and the vocals. Child in time is amazing live.

Stellar tune & performance. S-tier for me. That footage is from an earlier show in Denmark, I believe.

This album has a reputation as being one of, if not the, greatest live album of all time for a reason.....it's f**king awesome! Recording wise, performance wise, atmosphere wise.....just brilliant. I have a Japanese pressing of this LP but it is titled "Live In Japan" for obvious reasons.....as the LP is literally made in Japan.😄 Stunning sound quality! Andy's right about the footage....there's too many Westerners (Americans or English?) in the audience for a concert in Japan!😉

If you really want the high notes from Ian Gillan , then you need to check out , Strange Kind Of Woman , live from 1972 . Ian and Ritchie go back and forth with high notes . You will like !

That right there? That’s as good as it gets. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 The fact that that Gillan didn’t hit all the shriek notes is whatever. They were rocking hard AF, and for me that’s what counts. Also, if you dig Deep Purple, you ought to hear Big Elf. Songs like Neuropsychopathic Eye, and Death Walks Behind You really deliver the goods.

Always a banger! One of my Deep Purple faves! Please react to "Perfect Strangers" or "Knockin' At Your Back Door". They were a little later in their career but still so bomb!

That high note that you seem to think is missing is actually a harmony part he put on in the studio version. It wasn't that he was too lazy to sing the high part in the live version, it's that he chose to sing the melody.
