More sides of ABBA you haven't explored yet: - My Mama Said (1974) [a funky soul ballad, very underrated] - Eagle (6 Minute Album Version) (1977) [has a psychedelic sound. Pick the full 6 min version, not the short music video] - I Let the Music Speak (1981) [a complex musical-type song, with a lovely orchestral arrangement] - Watch Out (1974) [uptempo glam rock, with Björn on vocals] - Hey, Hey Helen (1975) [midtempo glam rock] - The Way Old Friends Do (live) (1980) [a hymn] - I Have a Dream (1979) [lovely children's song with a choir at the end] - Arrival (1976) [Nordic folk, no lyrics] - My Love, My Life (1976) [romantic ballad with layered backing harmonies] - Summer Night City (Full-length Version) (1978) [disco-rock. Pick the 'unreleased' version with the extra intro] - The Name of the Game (1977) [one of their most sophisticated ballads, lots of transitions] - Our Last Summer (1980) [melancholic ballad by Frida]

There were 5-7 singles on the album, but they only released 2. Back in the day, it took a long time for singles to make their run on the charts. This could’ve been a pretty big one for them. I heard this, One Man One Woman, and Eagle on the radio in rural Ohio, a place devoid of musical taste in those days.
@kristianmapage97423 жыл бұрын
Abba by the very very wide diversity of their quality production, in the interpretation, the richness of the sound, with a lot of instrument in addition to the voices, vocal backing, arrangements and obviously compositions and themes, leave us a very important legacy in the western pop music. They are, it seems to me because of what they brought to all of this and also to the emotions, a little universal happiness musically. It is striking, from the lightness of the carefree youth, to those most affected by the pains of our lives, sentimental ballads, superficial "jovial", disco, rocks, ispanic song, etc. etc. If there were not the voices of girls, it would be difficult to perceive that it is the same creatord, the same group.

This is ABBA's 5th studio album - sorry if I'm coming to this late: you probably already worked that out for yourself! Interesting comment about the major / minor switch: to my ear, the same note in both lines of the chorus goes into minor - "be", and "hole"...am I missing something? This song always reminds me of «ABBA: The Movie», when it is played at the beginning. ABBA The Album was their highest-charting album here in the U.S. (peaking at a respectable Nº 14). Also,,,,,,, I recommend you see their performance of «Hole In Your Soul», from November of 1979, Live at Wembley Arena. When they played 5 consecutive sold-out concerts, from 6 to 10 November. ⚠⚠⚠Pardon me for correcting you,,,,,but⚠⚠⚠ You said «ABBA: The Album», was a «self-titled», when, actually, ABBA had only 1 «self-titled» album, which was, simply «ABBA», from 1975 (their follow-up album to «Waterloo»), which included the smash hits «Mamma Mia» and «S.O.S.».

This was from ABBA’s fifth album, ABBA-The Album was called that to tie in with ABBA-The Movie, as both were released at same time and they would promote each other. Hole In Your Soul had elements of ‘Get On The Carousel’ in it, that song was performed in their live shows in 1977 tour as part of the mini-musical ‘The Girl With The Golden Hair’. Benny and Bjorn were unhappy with it, so it was left off The Album (footage of Get On The Carousel is on KZbin.) Hole In Your Soul was scheduled for a single release, especially in Australia, but ‘The Name Of The Game’ was released instead. As other commentators have said, the live version is even rockier, and Is worth a look. Great review, cheers.

I don't think ABBA are underrated as songwriters by anyone over 45 or so. If you were there first time round, you know. But I also think their catalogue is big enough that there's many gems that younger people have just never heard. But I do love seeing younger people react to hearing them for the first time now. Greetings Tommy, from Australia 🐨👋😃 'ABBA The Album' was their 5th of their 8 studio albums, released late 1977. Their first was 'Ring Ring' (1973), then 'Waterloo' (1974), 'ABBA' (1975), 'Arrival' (1976), this one, 'Voulez-Vous' (1979), 'Super Trouper' (1980), then 'The Visitors' (1981). At one stage, 'Hole In Your Soul' had the chance of being the first single lifted from the forthcoming 'ABBA The Album' in late 1977 (and ABBA's record label at the time, RCA, campaigned to ABBA that it be so; but, instead, ABBA chose 'Name Of The Game'). Just thinking about it now (after all these decades of being an ABBA fan [since Monday the 8th of March, 1976 😉].), I feel that this song could arguably be a showcase to promote ABBA to newbies of their music, as opposed to the predictable set of hits (that, of course, I also still love 😁), because it shows a spectrum of diversity that *is* ABBA: this is essentially a rock song, that also blends pop/ballad into it, and has various surprises in it, so it's not just a tune. And, as you're discovering through the 'non-mainstream' tunes and songs from ABBA's catalogue, they *are* diverse, and there *are* surprises in their repertoir as well as in many of the individual songs. Each of ABBA were not just musicians, they were crafts-people (Benny & Björn always were open to many constructive suggestions from Frida & Agnetha - as well as the musicians who played with and for them, so they were indeed an ensemble, not just 'puppets' doing what Benny & Björn told all of them to do). Thanks for another great ABBA reaction/review ...always enjoyable. (...by the way, I look forward to hearing the next KZbin of you singing; you have a great voice). Cheers.

Great song - great reaction! It´s from their fifth studio album "Abba - The Album" from 1977. If you want to react and listen to yet another side of Abba, try a real gem - and a bit corny as well: My Mama Said from their 1974 and second album Waterloo! It´s very different from other Abba songs! I also look forward for you to react to Eagle, The Name of the Game and I´m a Marionette from Abba - The Album. They are all very complex and not typical Abba! And there are so many more songs tio discover for you - I´ve been an Abba fan since I was 9 years old in 1974 - and I NEVER get tired of listening to them. This is the first reaction vid of yours I’ve seen and I’m looking forward to checking out your reaction to “The Visitors” which is one of my favorite ABBA songs and a good example of what you pointed out in the video regarding the variety of songs which ABBA recorded. It was a huge album & I believe (someone correct me If I'm wrong) their most successful album in America. ABBA totally dominated the Charts (the UK one anyway) for years, It seemed that they were always No 1 in the charts with something. My personal favourite was "Knowing Me Knowing You".
