I love this, it's one of my favourite songs, and just shows the vocal ability of Frida so well. Interestingly, I also feel it is one of the foundations of Chess the musical as you can really hear the similarity in music styles, and chord progressions between this and Chess ... bits of it could almost be from the musical ... of course it wasn't so long after this that they wrote Chess. All in all, I think one of the many hidden gems of ABBA's back catalogue

I've listened to their music over and over and I've never really heard all the little musical pieces they put into their tunes until I watched your reactions. Now I'm hearing Abba all over again but not just listening to the girls' voices but hearing the synths, the flutes, the guitars, the piano, the bass, the drums, etc. It's like discovering them all over again! My favorite Frida lead ABBA song! Her vocal performance here is superb! You have to understand that when they recorded the visitors album the boys were moving away from creating the typical 3 minute pop song of the few years past. They wanted something different that is why ILTMS sounded very different from what they've done. Musical theater is the obvious choice for Bjorn and Benny and i think ILTMS is a great recording by the band.

When the boys wrote the music for the girls, they would write it with either of the girls in mind as some songs would've been written in a style specific to the voice required. This is a beautiful ballad with a lot of pictorial imagery woven into the lyrics. A truly mature, deep and unusual song for Abba. Listening to it a number of times the meaning comes thru.

They started recording sessions for 'The Visitors' album right after Benny & Frida had announced their divorce. The sadness of it all coloured much of the atmosphere on the new album, with most songs dealing with regret, loss, loneliness and melancholy. For the first time on an ABBA album, Agnetha & Frida did not sing in unison in the verses on any song. Also, unlike the previous albums, 'The Visitors' had very few potential singles. ABBA was becoming less accessible and less commercial. It also showed in its chart performance. Although the album shot to the top in most territories, its chart life was much shorter than usual. The first single 'One Of Us' was a major chart hit but with the second single 'Head Over Heels', commercial decline set in on most of the singles charts as well, by not getting into the top ten (or even top twenty) in a lot of countries. This was unheard of for ABBA, especially in countries like the UK and Germany, where every ABBA single had been a guaranteed top five hit. The album sleeve for 'The Visitors' also gave a clue that they were drifting apart. For the first time they were not portrayed as a close unit, but standing apart, as four individuals, as if they didn't even acknowledge each other's presence. Benny & Bjorn were keen to start writing a musical and you could say that 'I Let The Music Speak' was their first venture in this territory. It's not really a pop song, with its changing tempos and moods. It's a song that would be better suited in musical theatre than on a pop album. That being said, Frida delivers a masterful vocal performance and Bjorn's lyrics are profound and poetic. The song is one of my big favourites and I'm glad it was included. According to ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions, Benny, Bjorn and Frida have all singled out this particular track as one of their five favourite ABBA tracks a few years ago. On a side note: 'The Day Before You Came' was not part of the original 'The Visitors' album. It was released as a stand-alone single almost a year after the album (and at the time included on a greatest hits package). On later CD issues of 'The Visitors' it was added as one of the bonus tracks.

An unassuming banger of a song this is. Yes it is theatrical, but that's where the similarity with Money Money Money starts and ends. It's such a beautiful song, but you must listen to the lyrics to get this song. It's tough, requires a great deal of decoding and needs effort. It's not song you'd understand in one sitting.
@dragpalace4 жыл бұрын
I hear strongly in this song that Björn and Benny probably were already working on a musical (Chess) when they wrote "I let the music speak". Indeed this song sounds theatrical like it was a part of a musical. When the Visitors came out, no one knew that is would be their last album. But when ABBA broke up as a group and Björn and Benny came with their Chess musical, everything fell on its place .
@thisworldofwater80174 жыл бұрын
Ooh, what a fantastic deep cut (as you youngsters call them). This is basically a stage musical tune, indicative of the way Benny and Björn went afterwards. (There's even a part that sounds a bit like One Night In Bangkok - another strong rec, by the way.) It's also initimidatingly *musical* in the sense that it takes several listens to fully take in such a complex melody and arrangement.
@glebeboi4 жыл бұрын
The entire The Visitors album is a break away from their other albums with a more complex adult sound to it. You are right regarding the song has a theatrics sound to it as Benny & Bjorn were wanting to create a musical score and as such, it needs to be meaningful and not so boppy like pop songs. The lyrics are also telling a story, creating an image that best suits something you would hear in a stage production. Frida's voice is totally suited to this song and being trained in opera allowed her to carry the notes the way she did. Lines like “I’m hearing images, I’m seeing songs, no poet has ever painted.” as well as "and in the dead of night, I find myself a blind man in some ancient valley." (not finds a blind man). You're also right about the drum sounds creating a type of marching beat which is also noticeable on a few other tracks esp Soldiers. The Visitors is my favourite album of Abba mostly due to the composition of the songs, the more mature lyrics & singing and the levels of different instruments being more broadway stage production orchestra.

Bjorn is trying to explain in the song where he gets his lyrical ideas from, the ABBA backing tracks’ were recorded, and Bjorn would listen to it over and over, and he would say, eventually the song would tell you a story. “I’m hearing images, I’m seeing songs, no poet has ever painted” Benny said he would’ve used this song in their Musical ‘Chess’ if ABBA hadn’t recorded it.
