I loved this when I first put on that record back in '81 and I love it just as much today. Frida's vocals are masterful. Yes it is theatrical and foretold "Chess" that Benny and Bjorn did a couple years later. The Visitors is soo layered with mature Abba themes. They also let Frida and agnetha take more individual ownership of lead vocals. Frida really shines on the Visitors as her mezzo soprano is particularly suited to the dark and moody vibes. They certainly grew from Honey Honey and Dum dum diddle. I dig your trying to understand and appreciate Abba. They are a constellation in an orbit by themselves...

The Visitors is their most sophisticated album. Often called,, their album for adults. What is meant by that is it will drop the younger and more pop oriented listener. But it got noticed by music theater and classical music critics and fans. ABBA had Anni-Frid Lyngstad, their pro vocalist and front and center pro, who came from the classical/jazz/vocal centric genre's before ABBA. Stage/theater/cabaret/TV, etc... Started on stage in 1956. Pro in 1958, age 13. Highly respected since grace school. The real deal. Multiple National Best Vocalist wins, 1964 & 1967. Swept the talent hunts as a kid. Identified in grade school by her teachers for her vocal talent and her keen ear. She was overqualified for many songs, particularly ABBA's wall-of-sound, heavy rhythm, sing-songy stuff that put the ABBA girls firmly pasted to the wall-of-sound. Before the foursome became ABBA in 1972, they were an uncommitted foursome, 1970- early 71. Anni-Frid was the uncommitted one. She had options. After their cabaret shows winter of 70-71 Anni-Frid left the foursome. Went on tour with a male performer, etc... The foursome was done. No future ABBA. She had a solo contract with EMI Sweden, 1967-72. EMI wanted to extend/resign her as they had big plans for her. Stig Anderson/Polar Music wanted her badly as a solo artist and to be part of Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha. BB were already working for Stig Anderson as Polar Music house producer's, writing and producing for lots of artist too include Lena Andersson. Agnetha and Bjorn married and she came along with Bjorn. Benny & Anni-Frid were bf/gf, but Anni-Frid was not tied to the group. Anni-Frid was a kind of a free agent. In her final contract year with EMI Sweden. Stig Anderson Polar Music negotiated for about a year (1971-72) to get her to sign a solo contract and also join Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha to make the foursome official. Stig Anderson may have been Polar Music, but Anni-Frid had the pull. She was a hot property. Highly respected. Experienced. A pro! She knew her value and understood the business. Just got paid! In 1972, Anni-Frid accepted a sweet deal solo contract and other incentives from Stig Anderson Polar Music and also agreed to rejoin the group. Stig soon after named them ABBA. The rest is history. If Anni-Frid said NO to Stig, the world would never have had an ABBA. ABBA: Bright Lights Dark Shadows The Real Story of ABBA By Carl Magnus Palm

In this one you can hear how strong influence from classical music was in Benny's composing of ABBA's songs. That's the main reason they are so versatile, why there is no copy of another (their) song in their opus, every single one is different, and why every song is a small masterpiece. Listening to this one, when I close my eyes, I see ballet act in an old empty theatre.

You are spot on with the time signatures. The song changes towards then end from 4/4 to 3/4, skips a beat and go back to 3/4 I think, or possibly 6/8. I'm sure someone that know music theory can make more sense of it than me.

A&U always had musical theatre in the back of their minds, so you're detecting the theatricality accurately. (That's why it was so good an idea to write a musical around classic ABBA songs, namely "Mamma Mia"; but A&U wrote theatre scores from scratch too, "Chess" and "Kristina", after ABBA broke up...)

The difference between the singing voices: Frida has the jazzy, musical style voice,Agnetha is more adept in Rock and straight out ballads. Both could sing the classical voice and together they formed a sound carpet of voices extraordinaire. If Agnetha sang this song, you would hear something reminiscent of 'My love,my life. BTW,you looked for a certain instrument,I can't relate to the point in the song, but maybe you just really heard Violins played staccato or fingertipped. Sounds crazy, but violins can deceive you in their sound, when played in an other than the conservativ way.

It's a very descriptive and theatrical song. This album, The Visitors reflects Benny and Bjorn's moving past pop music and developing their theatrical skills. It wasn't soon after this, they started work on the musical Chess. Soldiers, Two For The Price Of One, I Let The Music Speak are all examples of their style going beyond the 4 min. pop song and into more descriptive, melodramatic concepts. Critics started to praise them, but by this time Benny and Bjorn had decided to move on, and so did the group as a whole.

It's not wrong to call it "theatrical". Benny and Björn shortly after starting working on an an actual theatrical piece - the musical "Chess". The closest ABBA came to classical music, I suppose.

An earlier album, ABBA The Album (1977) also contained three songs from a mini musical called "The Girl with the Golden Hair" - "I wonder (Departure)", "Thank you for the music" and "I'm a Marionette". This song is much more complex than "Thank you for the music".
