ABBA had planned to release 'If It Wasn't For The Nights' as the 1st Single, off the 'Voulez-Vous' Album, in January 1979. They even performed it on 'The Mike Yarwood Christmas Show', in December 1978. (UK TV - BBC1). However, by January 1979, they changed their minds and released 'Chiquitita' instead. 'If It Wasn't For The Nights' was never a Single, after all - except to end up as the 'B' Side of 'Super Trouper' in Japan, in 1980...

The song/clip that started ABBAmania in Australia in 1975 - thanks to Molly Meldrum - and his wisdom. They were not going to release this as a single at first - but they gave in to the pressure from Australia - and the rest, as they say, is history !

Another great reaction! Mamma Mia brought them back to No.1 in the UK, the single before was S.O.S, also in top 10 in UK the following singles after Waterloo were not so successful, and they were called: "a one hit wonder", what a mistake. They realesed the following singles it this order S.O.S. Mamma Mia, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Money Money Money, Knowing me knowing you, The Name of the Game, ake a Chance on me...., most are No. Ones, what a journey!!!! And a lot follows...

If it were not for us here in Australia, Mamma Mia would not have been a single release, because ABBA had no intention on it being released, until the film clip was played on a music tv show a number of times and pressure was put on Stockholm to out us release it.

ABBA won the Eurovision contest in 1974, it's a big thing in Europe, people make sure they're home watching it, out of all the singers and groups ABBA won and they were on there way, Honey Honey is another great song you should listen to, there's a video

@Martin Charron I have their 1980 album, «Gracias Por La Musica», and it includes «Hasta Mañana». The whole album, is Spanish versions of some of their songs.🎼🎶🎵

Mama Mia also played a big role (as did ABBA in general) in the Australian Drag Queen movie "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" in the mid 90s.

I think what makes this song so distinctive is the staccato accompaniment of the piano and the marimba (I thought it was a harpsichord) together and all then combined with the more rocky bass, guitar & drums. Great reaction. Another excellent (and less known) Abba song great to react would be "The Piper"

C'est Frida qui créait les design des costumes portés par les membres du groupe au début de leur carrière. Le look glam rock était à la mode. Mais, le plus important et surprenant, c'est qu'ils pouvaient recevoir des crédits d'impôt pour les costumes. Les suédois sont énormément taxés. Those jump suits were iconic in there time. Charlies Angels also used jumpsuits for his Angels in the opening theme for the Show.

Nice as always with abba Dereck. I really thing you need to give the studio version of Gimme, Gimme, Gimme a chance. The live version from Wembley you watched is really quite different in my opinion. Also, it's one of Agnetha's most powerful performances in my view. The ultimate pop song.

Mamma Mia! Movies are pretty cool camp escapism movies. If you want to review ‘When I Kissed The Teacher’ from the 2nd movie, don’t worry, it won’t spoil the plot! Plus there is a cameo from Bjorn in it too. Yeh, these outfits the girls were wearing were for their 1974/75 tour, it was around this time that Agnetha got labelled with the ‘Lady with the most sexiest bottom’ although, it was repeated in the press all around the world, Agnetha became pretty tired of the constant questions regarding it, a female journalist asked her about it and Agnetha’s reply was “Oh how interesting.” Frida’s costume on the other hand was much more revealing! Especially when she twirled around on stage, both ladies helped design costumes alongside their designer Owe Sandstrom.

Both Mamma Mia! movies are entirely based on ABBA’s songs. Though the singing doesn’t hold a candle to the original songs, it’s a must for every ABBA fan and I would recommend you watching both movies! However, it’s really a shame that in the US, Mamma Mia is more recognized as “the movie with Meryl Streep” rather than the song by ABBA. I will never understand why they weren’t as famous there as in the rest of the world.

Abba was never the main act in USA, and the movie itself has an awful plot. A story in Greece with no Greeks!

​@@resireg Indeed the plot wasn't written by Shakespeare but it's a fun movie that pays tribute to ABBA and the special bond between a mother and her daughter. However, I must point out that the movie has a lot of Greeks, all the background characters being played by folks living on the real island. Plus, ABBA knew quite a success in the US, just not as much as in Europe, Australia, South America and even Asia (notably Japan). The Broadway musical and the 2 movies were a great push to renew their American success.

@@felixjoz6513 well, I was bothered that the first movie, Greece is just a background. For example the Meryl Streep character, she spent at least 2/3 of her life there, so the logical thing would be her speaking with her staff in their language, especially when they are simple folk. In the second, Cher is her mother when she is almost like her sister in age, and she was in love with Andy Garcia, who is way too young to be her lover. And they changed the meaning of songs by actually using alternative lyrics, like in "when all is said and done,"

Kudos, Dereck!! You nailed the pronunciation of Björn perfectly:). Searching for deeper meaning in the lyrics here is still a bit premature. In the earlier days their mentor, manager, and sometimes co-writer Stig Andersson would often come up with a song title and throw it at Bjorn and he would end up having to figure out the lyrics to work around that. Waterloo, SOS, The Name of the Game, and this one, Mamma Mia. So there would be Bjorn, forced to come up with a whole song built around a clever phrase or a play on words. Benny and Bjorn were solely responsible for the music, which was always flawless. The chorus would be built around Stig’s clever title snd invariably the results would be a brilliant and catchy ear worm that would stick in your mind for hours. Typically the verses ended up having less meaning and relevance. as time wore on Benny and Bjorn became less and less reliant upon Stig’s assistance and by the time the Voulez Vous album came out the were completely independent in the writing of lyrics. It is at this time that Bjorn really started writing stories instead of simple lyrics. Chiquitita is a brilliant example:) Dereck, you commented on the propensity of white in their wardrobes. Cool of you to notice and point that out. The white is VERY Scandinavian....in their fashion as well as their signature decor and interior design. Scandinavian decor is incredibly iconic even to this day. Besides this, Agnetha was and still is an absolute fiend for white. Fashion wise, it was always her first choice and, at least in the beginning, the 3 other members would acquiesce. The girl was strong willed and could argue the stripes off a tiger. Later on Frida became more vocal about their costumes and outfits. It was her visions that inspired the rabbit and bird tunics, the spandex cat suits, and the bolero blazers. Always a joy being a witness on you ABBA journey, Dereck. Looking forward to the next one!

Well, Derecks pronunciation is no way near correct. I wouldn't expect it to be, my English is far from perfect as well. Björn (bjœːɳ), also the Swedish word for bear, should sound close to the English word "burn" with a "j" tucked in there, and with an American accent I guess. Bjurn that is, not BjOrn. Funny how the title of the song «Mamma Mia» is in the Italian language,,,, but ABBA never did all that well on the Italian pop music charts. 😕 Non capisco!

Yes, they had no No.1 Singles, or Albums, in Italy. I'm told, that it is because, ABBA only made one 'Live' TV appearance, on Italian TV. That was in 1975. 'Mamma Mia' was not a Hit, in Italy, until October 2008, when it reached No.12. It was not a Hit there, in 1975/1976, because it was made the 'B' Side, of 'SOS', which was ABBA's biggest Italian Single - No.2. Most of the Italian Sales of 'SOS', were in 1976. It was the 7th Best Selling Italian Single of 1976. 'Waterloo' and 'Dancing Queen' Peaked just outside the Italian Top 10. 'The Winner Takes It All' reached No.8 in one Italian Chart and No.11 in another. Their only other, Italian Top 10 Hit, was 'Fernando'. That was No.3 in one Chart and No.6 in another. They had several Italian Top 10 Albums. The highest Charting was 'ABBA Gold', which was a No.2 Album...
