You can make an argument for several bands over which was the greatest of all time. But I'd have to say that when it came to variety in their music, nobody can touch ABBA. They had so many songs covering just about any style of music... rock, pop, disco, jazz, Broadway musical, Latin, Russian, I swear they even had a country song or two. Even here, The Piper, what a great piece of music that almost seems like it came from medieval times.

I guess the folk influence but not specifically Russian. Benny made reference to the 'Melancholy Belt' when ABBA was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.. A sort of sentimental Folk music that is played from Northern Russia, through Finland into Scandinavia. The composition 'Arrival' is an example.

ABBA wasn't really a standard pop band. They were too sophisticated. Lots of classical and traditional music, which is what they grew up with in Sweden. They also used unusual chords. On many of their upbeat sounding songs, they used minor chords that really added a "smiling through tears" effect. ABBA was a unique band. They also had a very high level of musicality, musicianship and professionalism.
