ABBA has that magic. It all starts with the "tune" ...For whatever reason Benny and Bjorn just had it in them to write timeless melodies... Endlessly catchy...... Then to have Agnetha and Frida's voices to sing those melodies........ Ha ha. Is Alchemy........ Pure Gold. ......... Thanks for your reactions.

Hello, nice to see you again with your reactions to ABBA songs "Waterloo" (1974) is one of my favorites, and is in my Top 5 of all ABBA songs (with S.O.S. , Dancing Queen, The winner takes it all & Don't shut me down) and I think that is the song that change history, not only for ABBA, for Sweden and Eurovision too "Waterloo" was the song that ABBA wrote especially to participate in the annual Eurovision Song Contest By the rules of the competition the songs could not exceed 3 minutes (that its 2:46) and ABBA made a masterpiece! ABBA sing it in Swedish, for the local selection in Sweden (February 1974) and finally ABBA sing it in English in the final held in England (April 1974) before 16 interpreters and songs from all over Europe. it's a link to that historic moment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKGUkIKBltx7j9k "Waterloo" and ABBA win Eurovision for the first time for Sweden It will be Their first big worldwide hit: #1 in UK and half Europe (also South Africa), and Top 10 in U.S., Canada, Australia , New Zealand and the rest of Europe ABBA recording "Waterloo" in swedish, english, german and french Several years later, in 2005, to the 50th Eurovision anniversary, "Waterloo" was chosen as the Best Song in all the history of Eurovisión i hope you have a nice week Kind regards from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷 South América

They are the best imo, I just saw the Voyage concert last week and it was fantastic. The marketing is correct, it's truly a concert like no other. Waterloo is a classic, even better when they play it live with the massive sound. You have a ton of hits to choose from like S.O.S, Fernando, Chiquitita and many others, but there are also the likes of The Visitors and Soldiers which are probably ABBA's most political songs. Both amazing songs imo. For live, you wanna check out their Wembley performance in 79, Does Your Mother Know right into Hole In Your Soul, the transition is so good. Or Summer Night City from the same concert, also great

It's interesting watching younger people hear the sax in a song and get so excited. In the 80's, the sax was common, it was in quite a number of hit songs and I think we must've just taken it for granted. In fact artists like George Michael (from WHAM) had huge hits (like Careless Whisper) which was entirely built around the sax. Other artists like INXS, Dire straits, Gerry Rafferty, Glen Frey and others also used sax prominently.

Back then, the contestants at Eurovision always had a live grand orchestra to provide the music (or assist, as the case may be), usually with the song's composer conducting. As Benny and Björn were the composers, I dunno who the actual conductor was, but he showed up wearing the eponymous Napoleon bicorn hat. Oh, and all Eurovision songs had that same time limit. Abba were the first group ever to win Eurovision, too, rather than solo singers or duos. Their music still fills every dance floor in the blink of an eye, even 50 years later.

"Waterloo" was written as an entry to the Eurovision Song Contest, which meant that it couldn't run over the allotted three minutes. And pop songs in Sweden in the 1970s didn't go much over three minutes anyway, so it wasn't much of a restriction to begin with.
@greglane80923 ай бұрын
I looked through the comments and didn't see any that mentioned that the Eurovision Song Contest places a time limit of 3:00 on all of the participating songs, so that helps to explain why the song is so short, but it is still amazing what all was accomplished in 2:46.
