Only problem with Chikara is the assumption that using 'may' or 'might' is fence-sitting when it's basic academic language. No scientist in any field will use decisive language. It's part of understanding that all knowledge should and could be falsifiable, and that this principle underlines the scientific method. Abbey is a certified dietician and not a doctor, but still a certified professional. For credibility she 100% should use non-decisive language when discussing potential side effects and complications. If psychiatrists said 'Ritalin will always cure your ADHD' it would be incredibly unprofessional and also unscientific, even when speaking in a casual context. We must acknowledge situations in which it doesn't.

As a dietician student, intuitive eating isn’t supposed to be an end all be all for every single person. but dietitians have speciality’s and I think this is the field that she is most well versed in and decides to treat her clients with. There are a lot of dietitians out there and you just have to find the right one to help you in your specific situation
@xosecox124 жыл бұрын
Exactly. She is focused on restrictive eating. I wish people got that. Many medical practitioners specialize like this. I wouldn't want an RD treating obese patients treating me as someone who is recovering from anorexia. I’d want someone who is focused on my ED type. If you had swollen tonsils would you see an oncologist or an ENT? It's common sense and I wish people were more open-minded about this
@moretyquira4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! just like how therapists have different fields and specialties! I really wish more people would approach it with that kind of open-mindedness. just because it doesn't work for you DOESN'T make her a bad dietician or wrong.

@@seriesjunkie90 From what i've seen under Abby's video a lot of her viewers do suffer from some kind of ED and her being very the way she is kinda helps some people introducing certain type of good habits into their eating. She talks about her approach the most because it's likely the only one she knows because like the original comments say it's probably her field when it come to being a dietitian. nothing wrong with you disliking her approach but it's my 2cents on that. i don't think her approach will and can work on everyone but if it helps even a few people appreciating food again then it's a good thing. :)

i’m a recovering anorexic and i just wanna say thank you john for your talk about intuitive eating! i’ve been incorporating it into my life for 10 years now (not always successfully, let’s be honest lol). i first heard about it when i was being treated as an inpatient centre for my ed when i was 15. i had to do a month of having a rigid diet plan where i followed a strict schedule for meal and snack times. this was bc if i tried intuitive eating right off the bat, i would’ve continued never eating because my brain had actually convinced itself that i was never hungry anymore from the 5 years of disordered eating. i had to force myself to eat regular meals to reset my clock before i could really learn to listen to hunger signals and intuitively eat. i know a lot of people recovering from eating disorders agree that it’s not as easy as just saying “okay, i’m gonna eat intuitively now” like i get it, obv it’s the ideal but start treating it as something to strive for, not something that’s gonna get you there.

Dude's missing a GIANT and important step in eating disorder recovery and the journey towards intuitive eating. If you've ever been to a dietician who specializes in ED then you know that the first step is not jumping into intuitive eating. OF COURSE there's no way you can do that. Step one is mechanical eating - eating a set meal plan at set times of day - so you can rediscover your hunger and full cues. With time the ultimate goal is intuitive eating, but some in ED recovery will never get there and that's okay, too.

1:01:20 I understand wanting equality, but in comparing it to alcoholics or drug addicts, I think the channel Young Dumb Honey Bun has explained it the best which is that a "normal person" posting a video of them where they have some drinks isn't a problem, but an alcoholic filming themselves drinking and monetizing it is an issue because they are directly profiting off of their addiction, which makes it harder for them to want to seek help. Food addiction is also a thing, so I think we can correlate it pretty seamlessly in that people who (at least to the outside world) seem to have a healthy relationship with food filming themselves eating is fine, but people who have diagnosed EDs shouldn't because, again, they're profiting off of their addiction. Amber has outright said that she gets the most views (and therefore money) when she posts videos where her body is in the thumbnail "looking like a big elephant" (her words, not mine), so she is fully aware that she is in the position she is in financially because she's abusing her body and her addiction. I hope this was easy to understand!

@azlizzie4 жыл бұрын
Intuitive does not equal mindless. I know this is a joke but people genuinely misunderstand and think it’s just following whatever you want to eat whenever you want to eat it. It’s doing serious work and getting to a healthy place where you can trust yourself and your food choices without having to overthink every bite.

Counterpoint: Intuitive eating got me to realize I hated 98% of desserts because they were boring with literally no other flavor than sweet involved and got me eating more plant based.

I like your channel so much, I watched a few of this woman's videos but had to stop because she had a few opinions that just kinda hit me wrong. It's cool to see you articulate that in real time.

I wouldn't have a problem with Abbey having a specific demographic she's talking to if she was upfront about it.
@MissKitae4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I'd have more respect for Abbey if she'd stop with the "disclaimers" and then give her "opinion" on why certain behaviors and choices are "problematic". Also if she wouldn't cherry pick select videos for her confirmation bias. Just walk out and say it. We all know it's what you're doing with the roundabout.

Would absolutely prefer this! It would make a lot of sense and just illuminate her points further

Some people watch to "shock" themselves into action. Seeing where bad habits can lead can spur folks into change. Seeing what can happen to you if you don't change can help some people.

Comparing different things though. Yes not as many people die from AN because compared to people dying from obesity complications less people have AN (in population size), but AN is still the most lethal mental health disorder and the most lethal ED when it comes to mortality rates.

Her food challenges aren’t mukbangs. She does things like testing certain diets. Like she ate like Amber Lynn Reid for a day and did blood pressure readings to show how certain diets will impact your body so people can see what these influencers are doing to their body.

Rather than bringing illicit drugs into it, alcohol is a good comparison to food (at least from an addiction standpoint) Someone who drinks occasionally and sparingly vs someone who is spending each paycheck on alcohol (at the expense of rent, food, car, clothes etc). We call the latter an alcoholic and try to help them if we're close to them, it's ruining their health and their quality of life is diminishing.

I felt John was being slightly condescending towards Ilona. Is it a big youtuber versus small youtuber thing, I don't know, but I doesn't look good that he didn't give her credit for being open-minded, understanding and decent youtuber who's not stuck in their narrow agenda.
@carlysmith66184 жыл бұрын
i can kinda see that. like i’m at 45:19 and i paused to see if anyone commented on it bc he seemed upset? but at the same time everyone’s different and he’s probably just joking. i think everything he said that maybe seemed condescending he was jus sorta joking around. but you may be right. it’s jus to me i feel like he wouldn’t intentionally like be rude to people like that. but may be i’m wrong.
@natalie53344 жыл бұрын
@@carlysmith6618 Well, for me, I wouldn't say that he was rude (and by the way I think in the majority of cases when one is being rude they don't do it purposely to be rude, it's just the moment where their true nature shines through). I think John showed unjustified condescension to a person who, yes, is to not afraid to clearly state their strong opinion, but also, seeks for truth and middle ground, yet at the same time he shows A LOT more respect to Abbey, who is pushing an agenda (a pro who is pushing an agenda - very dangerous btw). That just doesn't sit well with me. He disagrees with Abbey in a very different manner. My only guess is that he is the type of person who "respects the authority". While to me the fact that Abbey is certified dietitian doesn't say much more than the fact that she is trained to analyze and has easier access to scientific information. That's it, it doesn't require automatic extra respect. But just to be clear, I don't think John is a bad person, maybe a little misguided?
@carlysmith66184 жыл бұрын
@@natalie5334 yeah he does seem to have different attitudes towards both of them. but to be fair abbeys video is a little more sophisticated than ilonas. so maybe he’s jus unintentionally reacting differently.

She’s got a huge disconnect here. Someone in a club partying and someone on the street shooting up may both suffer from addiction. You cannot look at someone and decide their an addict, that’s not how addiction works. Neither should be glorified or monetized. The same goes for these Mukbangs in my opinion!

Binging in a mukbang and then cycling 100 miles to compensate is bulimia though, right? I'm almost certain that excessive exercise is one of the compensation methods listed in the DSM-5 for the bulimia requirements. I have never heard of the guy mentioned so idk anything about him, but being ridiculously healthy doesn't negate the fact that the guy sounds like he could meet the requirements for bulimia.

I have to admit I was scared to get weightloss surgery or lose weight because I didn't want to have lose skin, but I saw a doctor on here who said don't worry about something that isn't even a worry right now. Now I'm down 128 lbs 😁
