These are brilliant. I want to add this: do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Don't worry about replicating someone's IG meal plan. Or adhering to any of her tips or rules perfectly. Just do something that is better than what you were doing yesterday. Every day. That's how you keep on track and meet long-term goals.

Thanks for this video, I'm not really trying to gain or loose weight, my current focus in that department is more "whatever happens happens" but I have been worrying a bit about my weight loss this past year. I mean it's not on an unhealthy level or bringing me into an unhealthy area weigh-wise but I still am starting to worry a bit. So this definitely helped. Also: shout-out to all those who lost weight during quarantine due to mental health struggles and now have to listen to their family congratulating them on their weight-loss, even after telling them the reasons. I'm very sorry you have to deal with that, take a hug from me!

ARGH. messed up diet culture is real. i feel so alone in my struggle. i used to love food and had no problem eating. but various things over the years - digestive issues reducing the foods i can eat, and mental health / stress issues reducing my appetite... i'm now in a situation i never thought i'd be in, where i find it a chore to eat. anyway, hugs to you too!!! and also i have to say @@AbbeysKitchen i really appreciate this video just to validate that the struggle is real. and also the part about eating bland food - OMG i LITERALLY did that tonight for dinner. i was like, i need to eat protein, i haven't had enough protein... but just didn't feel like eating anything until i thought of making soft scrambled eggs. added cream for calories! also some ice cream, and now i'm gonna make a protein milkshake to up my calories, which i've been doing but feeling bad about - but no more!

Yes! I found that I needed to balance the small volume, calorie dense foods (higher in fats and protein and fiber) and the easy-to-digest carbs. One of my favorite simple, quick meals was rice (easily digested and meant I didn't stay full forever), meat, and avocado (higher in calories and good nutrients). Also salt, pepper and sometimes onion and garlic powder.

Took me a while to build up the courage to watch this. I had to put on weight about 18months ago after my ed escalated during the pandemic. As I couldn't go into hospital or a facility, my step mum took it on herself to help me (she's a trained Samaritans councillor). It's really good to see that we did exactly what you recommend.. I find that even now, I have to remind myself that now I am healthy, eating is keeping my heart going and even though I am heavier than I want (still focus on the rolls on my tummy) that thats just me and it's ok. Sorry, just thought I would share what an excellent job my step mum did - she saved my life when the NHS was saving the rest of the UK!

Yes finally! This is such a topic that isn't spoken about much, however I've been underweight all my life and due to illness I lost even more the last few years. Thanks Abbey! Edit: I do want to point out that not every person that is underweight and/or wants to gain weight, is unable to tune in with their hunger cues. I eat about 2500 calories a day, I'm a 25 year old short female with an average lifestyle. I am naturally underweight, even though I eat more than all of my peers. I always have, yet I'm underweight. Three years ago I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, which made me lose more weight and thus I need to gain even more. It's not that I don't have hunger cues or that I am unable to eat. I just don't gain weight. I don't have an eating disorder either.

unless you have a medical condition, eating 2,500 calories will make you fat. you're not counting calories properly, or you're eating too much unprocessed and raw food which the body doesn't absorb as easily (only about 2/3rds of its calorie count).
@missessimple
@missessimple 3 жыл бұрын
@@kseniachevenard839 as I said, I do have a medical condition, but only the past three years or so. Before that, I was just always super hungry, low blood pressure, low sugar, etc. I eat a lot, yet am still underweight and unable to gain weight. Even when drinking nutrition drinks prescribed by a dietitian. Sometimes bodies behave this way, just like bodies being more overweight when the person doesn't even eat much. I don't think you should judge this easily...

This video was incredibly helpful, the small ways that I can add calories to meals make so much sense! It’s a struggle tho when you have a partner that’s trying to lose weight and your trying to gain weight. it’s easier for me to not eat what’s in the fridge than it is for him to resist the urge to eat the high fat foods that I need and he must avoid.

Maybe the fact that you eat super regularly is why you don't feel like your hunger cues ever returned? If you feed your body "continuously" it just thrives its best live with fuel all the time and don't need to warn you that you need to feed it. A bit like thirst and drinking. If you drink enough you are not supposed to feel thirsty either I've been told ;) But maybe you also need to wait still... anyways, congrats on getting your periods back !!

I have a blog post about getting your period back that you might find helpful: www.abbeyskitchen.com/lost-your-period/ - however, recovery can be a lot more than just getting your period back or weight restoration. There is a physical and psychological recovery and it can take just as long, if not longer for some to gain those cues back as it took to lose them. Please be patient and kind with your body and don’t give up! Keep doing what you're doing.

I have always maintained my weight within 3 pounds up or down, but now I do not have much of an appetite and only feel like snacking when I do get hungry. Of course, disease crosses my mind, but this video helped me to realize that I am not the only one that may be experiencing this situation. I am excited to go back to eating what I am comfortable with but will add some of the items you mentioned in the video! Thank you much! :-)

This has been an area of real struggle for me. It never bothered me when I was younger - even the infertility/ irregular cycles part. But I’m 42 now and thinking about the later half of my life, bone health, immune health, etc. 5’5” and 107. My goal is to reach 115. I have also tried to balance the weight gain with eating healthy and not sugar loaded foods. Even though I’ve been a nurse for 20 years, I TRASHED my body with my diet in my 20’s and 30’s; eating Eggo waffles and drinking sodas for breakfast… My diet wasn’t too good growing up either - raised on Hamburger Helper and corn dogs. Anyway, that did some damage to my metabolic health and I have some insulin resistance now. I have to force myself to eat walnuts, salads with lots of EVOO, avocados, etc. I really appreciate you touching on this subject. I learned some helpful tips that I plan to put into practice.

My top tip: There are many kinds of hunger cues, and rumbling in your tummy or everything sounding delicious are only two of them that you may or may not be getting. Crashes in energy is also a hunger cue! When you start feeling irritable and sleepy it could very well be your body's way of saying it needs more energy (calories). Anytime I start feeling that crash I ask myself when the last time I ate a real meal was and it's usually been too long.

Hi, wiithout knowing anything about your journey I did want to share something from my own experience: my partner has a very bad intolerance to garlic and onion, which took us years to figure out, and the symptom is nausea. Nausea can be triggered even if there is garlic or onion powder in prepared food (they are in literally all processed foods), or even when vagueries like “natural flavors” or “spices” are listed among the ingredients. I wanted to share this on the off chance that it sparks something for you. I cannot believe the difference since we identified this.

Are there any nutrients we need more of? I know I personally supplement vitamin D. Edit: Meal or supplement ideas that promote healthy sleep when you have to sleep during hours that go against your circadian rhythm. I know melatonin is not good long term, and as someone who has spent 2 years on midnights, I had to quit taking that. I'm sure there are all sorts of ideas others can think of for this to be turned into a whole video!

I understand that this video is following common nutritional advice BUT from experience I can say that a lot of the conventional advice doesn't actually work in practice. Yes, calorie dense foods do have lots of calories, BUT they are also very satiating. I was always so full trying to gain weight on avocados & hummus. My body kept trying to "maintain" under my BMI by sending me fullness cues after eating all these nutritionally dense foods. I wasn'table to move the needle consistently until I accepted enough "junk food" in my diet. If you need to gain weight, then "healthy foods" are whatever foods will get you back to healthy weight. Eat the pastries, ice cream and cookies. It's OK! Staying underweight long-term is far more dangerous for your health than eating some processed foods.

I absolutely agree with this. Nuts, nut butters, seeds, avocado, cream, real cheese, full fat versions of dairy, adding oils/butters to salads or dishes, eating meat with a lot of fat on it, etc are all very satiating and self limiting in my experience. The only difference between skimmed milk and full fat milk is the fat content, since carb and protein content of it is the same, yet I am able to drink skim milk and not get any satiety (my body would just feel the same as if I had consumed water) from it and not interfere with later intake of food, but if I drank full fat milk it would physically feel like I had eaten a meal. What I really think makes weight gain easier is eating junk/processed foods that combine carbohydrate with dietary fat, such as ice cream and pastries, crisps/chips, etc. Just like you said. Maybe these things are not healthy if eaten too much but certainly the calorie dense healthy food approach could end up backfiring because for some people because they are so self limiting due to satiety.

@@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this nutritional weight gain advice counter productive. Sure, I can eat a more nutrient dense meal or snack, but the satiety from full fat foods with keep my body to full and lower my hunger at my next meal. (And yes, I has the exact same experience as you with milk)
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 3 жыл бұрын
@@racheltheshadesoforange8700 I saw someone else in the comments recommend the processed food carb fat combo as well, it's very "more-ish", doesn't give much satiety, it stimulates insulin secretion more than a lot of healthier foods would. Did Abby mention avoiding fiber rich foods? (I have forgotten). Because that can help if stomach size and appetite are both really small and other tips haven't worked. That's also one of the reasons why the processed food tip works, as those are mostly low in fiber.

Removing fiber from my diet, albeit temporarily, was the key to gaining back weight after sickness. I couldn't digest vegetables very well at all and had to make a drastic change to white rice and more processed foods. My dietician had to basically hold my hand through the process because my former diet was remarkably balanced and healthy, but to get back my last 10lbs, I needed to forgo the healthy stuff just to get enough nutrients and calories in. Coconut milk in smoothies, curries, and adding sun butter on everything is a staple to help me maintain my wieght. I've been using mechanical eating and am still missing my cues but hope those come back soon.

Because of my anxiety, I cannot eat in the morning, so breakfast immediately went out the window.. Then on campus, not only do I have no break between classes, but there’s nothing available to me! So I find myself on the train, at seven pm, heading back home and realizing that.. I’ve only eaten a sandwich and some crackers 😬 My appetite is so low and I really look at mealtimes as chores! All of this makes me so upset because I have struggled with weight loss in the past, and I’m finally happy with my body( being home definitely helped me gain weight because I wasn’t skipping meals).. And now I’m so stressed out that I’m gonna start losing weight again 😭

I'd been restricting my food for the last 2 or 3 years because I was very stressed about my living situation and I gained an (unwanted) 20-30 pounds and lost my appetite, and thankfully now I'm in a much, much better living situation but I still struggle with low appetite which is made worse by my ADHD medication. I used to want to lose the 20-30 pounds I gained but after watching Abbey I decided to just be kind to myself because things happen and my body clearly doesn't want to lose the weight so I'm working more and more towards acceptance! But the appetite issue sucks because I'm trying to be healthy now and I'm trying to eat enough calories in the day but I rarely eat enough even though I try. This video helped me though, and I'm going to try these tips out! Thank you Abbey for such an important video

I created a youtube channel recently, so I could find lots of videos related to this and post comments, and I came across your channel. You are very knowledgable about nutrition and I enjoy watching your reviews about celebrity diets. I just subscribed to your channel. After being underweight my whole life I finally found out 3 years ago that I am sensitive to gluten (different from celiac disease). I studied nutrition so the doctor told me I didn't need to visit a dietician. I strongly suggest everyone to still visit a dietician after finding out you need to cut something from your diet. However, what helped me most was to seek help from a psychologist. After all these years of feeling weak, I suddenly had a lot of energy. Changing your diet can change your whole life. It certainly did in my case. So instead of just going to the doctor or dietician, also take your mental health into account. p.s. Half a year ago I reached a healthy weight by just eating healthy meals. My appetite has been low for about 2 years and the planning mealtime in my calendar helped a lot for me! I do receive hunger cues now :)

I’ve always been super skinny and tall my entire life, same as Mam. So in September 2021 when I started to realise I had severe Dysphagia, i was absolutely terrified. As you can imagine my build isn’t ideal for someone with Dysphagia. (investigations are still ongoing as to why I have this, but we just found out I have severe B12 deficiency, again like my mother) It continues to progress and I am now on soft/liquid foods. Cream soups, mash potato, and runny eggs are pretty much my only dinner options. I seem to be one of the lucky ones who can manage perfectly at breakfast (so I tend to have most of my calories at this time) but after that my options are slim. Ensure shakes, soft cheese and milk are my snacks of choice. Even yogurt is too thick! If you haven’t already it would be great to see some tips for making a Dysphagia diet nutritional and interesting. It’s such a struggle to keep on the weight these days. I’m 5’7 and 46kg when writing this. I hope I’ll be able to enjoy my favourite foods once more ❤️

I’m 16, almost 17, and I’ve been trying to gain weight for over a year, but it is very hard for me to do so. I’ve always been a thin build, but when Covid first started, I was upset a lot of the time and forgot to eat much, not having a good appetite. I unintentionally lost weight, and have had a very hard time gaining it. I tried for months eating lots and lots of extra food, peanut butter, yogurt bars, and things that weren’t very healthy, because I’m quite picky, but after I’d finally managed to gain five pounds, I just gave up and decided it was ok if I was a few pounds underweight since I’m otherwise very healthy. However, I immediately lost weight again, and this happened several times. I hate being so thin and just want to be able to be a normal weight without having to eat enormous quantities. I’m very picky, so that makes it harder, and I don’t like having large breakfasts; I prefer having snacks in the afternoon. Does anyone know what to do about this? I feel so alone. My parents are trying to lose weight, and it’s so embarrassing to be so thin when everyone around me isn’t.

For me I suffer from eating disorders that makes me don’t want to eat anything because I would feel like I’m full or sick even tho I didn’t have anything all day but recently I started watching a great youtube channel where the creator makes food and eat it (and the food looks so pretty) so I started to follow the recipes and eat them while i watch them eat and it made me feel more hungry and my appetite opened up idk why but I guess the idea of having someone to eat with me is nice and made me feel better

After starting a new medication that destroys my appetite, this is SO killer. I've been filling my calories with junk food because that's all that sounds good, but it leaves me feeling CRAPPY coming from a WFPB lady. Thank you thank you thank you.

I used to find it helpful to graze on a calorie dense nutrition or protein bar throughout the day by cutting it into fourths or eighths. And POPCORN!!! I found this so easy to eat between meals or noshing on after dinner while watching tv!

thank you thank you thank you for this video. every time i find a video like this it invigorates me to double down on continuing to fix my weight. ive been chronically underweight my entire life and it sucks. i feel guilty sometimes because i know that im technically '''''the ideal'''' in terms of the fucked up diet-based beauty standards, particularly from the 2000s-2010s standards, but the fact is that being small combined w/ my disability is an absolutely awful cocktail full of chronic pain and fatigue and co-morbid depression/EDs. i am SO ready to help my body help itself i think particularly wrt living with EDs, making food fun as well as nutritious is SO IMPORTANT. food-as-experience is the cornerstone in like every single culture. theres a reason why east asian food, for example, is so often paired with social gatherings and groups (like hotpot!). we're MADE to enjoy food. we SHOULD enjoy food! and i can say first hand eating with loved ones makes it so much easier. i love making food for my partner because a) i'm taking care of them, and b) it means im also taking care of myself, which in turn makes them happy. i highly recommend having a meal buddy. the last time i was with my partner (we're ldr and trying to immigrate, so we stay together for half-years oof), i bumped myself up 20+lbs and oh my god, my energy!! my strength!!! i was even BREATHING better. the change felt incredible

This was so helpful and comforting! I want to be more active and I can’t reach my fitness goals unless I properly nourish my body. I’m going to get out of bed and make myself a snack thank you! :)

i appreciate this video. i have a chronic condition that presents itself with indigestion, reflux and other fun stuff, and i'm also currently trying to recover from an ed and malnutrition, which includes weight gain. so i don't only have a problem mentally (ed voice) to eat the food, i also have a problem physically. even if my schedule allowed for more frequent meals, i still wouldn't, because it's hard to keep food in my stomach (reflux) and it's easier to go through that 3 times a day... i also despise anything but water and sometimes i have a problem swallowing even water (chronic illness strikes again) and i absolutely hate nuts... plus the RD i was assigned to is absolutely horrible, and she and the people around me would want to see me gain 5 kgs of fat in a week by binging on fast food every day while i'm trying to cope with having to gain weight and wanting to continue to live a healthy lifestyle (my family didn't, i started and then it turned into an ed, but i still want to eat heathily, not go back to litres of oil and takeout every night). it's fucking hard and i feel like i'm so alone in this, battling my mind and my body at the same time. currently i've got such stomach cramps i can barely sit. i don't even know why i wrote this, i guess i just needed to let it out ://
