FYI: I'm not saying that all frizz near the root is breakage! What I'm referring to is what you see on Kim K in the thumbnail of this video. Lots of short broken pieces that at first glance look like frizz. You'll commonly see this on people with over-processed hair because their hair is already extra fragile. So using styling tools can make their hair snap easily. Some hair types are definitely just prone to frizz at the root and small hairs at the root could also be new growth- but that's a different convo 😊

I am glad you have mentioned that it is potentially new growth. I've not processed my hair in well over ten years and I also dealt with telogen effluvium a few years ago in the midst of a nexus of stressful events. It's been a long process but I have a lot of these short hairs at varying lengths but my hair journey is legit and intentional. I am certain that it is new growth. I try to remember to take photos of the progression and it shows in my photos.

I have been doing hair for 15 years. To add to the “frizz” discussion: it could also be new growth. I’ve seen many times people who are dealing with this, and I ask them if they went through a period of intense shedding 6months to a year prior. Often the answer is yes. They had a baby, they had surgery or an illness or intense stress. Many different things can cause us to shed excess hair, and then once we are healthy and able it (hopefully) regrows. That can look/ act like frizz because it’s a lot of hair that isn’t the same length as the rest of the hair.

My pink scalp was much more noticeable. I went to my OBGYN and got on hormone replacement therapy. She told me, my hair loss was normal after a stressful situation. I said, I wasn't stressed, I was fine with the surgery, I'm much happier without the pain, cramping, bleeding, etc. She said, no, the surgery was stressful on the body, not mentally for me, but physically. Two years later, my hair is now back to it's normal, still thin but actually has a little more density. I believe it's because of balanced hormones! I’m glad you mention Biotin. As someone with a thyroid imbalance, it’s very common to lose lots of hair because of it. I’m hyperthyroid so my shed and growth cycle is sped up resulting in lots of shedding but also a lot of new growth which looks like frizz at my crown. Many people with thyroid issues take Biotin thinking it will help from losing the hair…the danger is taking Biotin 3-4 days before a thyroid test can give false testing results. Most people with a thyroid condition don’t need Biotin, they need to get their thyroid numbers dialed in (which is it’s own monster)

I am 60 and have long hair. I find if I wet my hair and put it up/braid it, then rinse again after swim it tangles less. Hair can only absorb so much water. So if it's wet before entering it pulls less pool water.
@friendsofeli13184 ай бұрын
I work at a pool. You are correct.
@friendsofeli13184 ай бұрын
Ps, you can use a conditioner or an oil. Please do it at least an hour or so before going into the water because the oil freshly applied to hair will immediately come off and float in the pool, and if everyone does this the water will get an oily film floating on to and will cause build up on the sides of the pool and filtration system. Not enough for you to really worry about but as a pool employee, I can tell and i get to clean it. But if you allow the product to absorb in you hair for a while before hand: It will help your hair be protected from the chemicals in the pool and the sides of the pool won't get so much build up. Also, same applies for sunscreen. It needs time to absorb into your skin 10 or so minutes. Otherwise, you are just rinsing it off.

Hi! Huge fan of your channel and your advice has changed my hair health dramatically. ❤ For those who are worried about hair damage from pools, I'm also a swim instructor/life guard who spends 5-6 hours per day in the pool about 3 days a week. Her advice is what has kept my hair healthy. Because of the amount of time I spend in the water, I wear a swim cap at ALL times. But even with a swim cap, I still apply conditioner/oils into my hair prior to getting in the pool. My only hair wash days are the days I work (double cleansing is helpful anyway, but ESPECIALLY if you spend a lot of time in the pool). If I do not wear a swim cap, I rinse my hair with fresh water before entering the pool so my hair doesn't soak up *as much* chlorinated water. Leave in conditioner post wash has also become my best friend. And please don't skip washing after swimming! The longer chlorine is in your hair the more damage it can do. Especially to color treated hair. Keep your hair healthy this summer, friends!

I have also tried Maui nourish & moisture shampoo (blue one), and it was not bad but it definitely felt weird washing my hair because the shampoo is very thick, but in my opinion if you have the money you could try their line since it is not that expensive (where i am from at least). Usually when the ends of my hair are really sticky it’s build-up from leave-in products, and I just solve that by squeezing excess shampoo from my roots all the way down to my ends and very gently massaging it the next time I wash it. I use a super gentle shampoo for this. I’ve never found that applying too much conditioner (or even a mask) can do that, if it’s a rinse-out product, and I have very low-porosity hair. About your second point: I don’t think your advice is wrong necessarily, but sometimes I wish you addressed the fact that people with very sensitive skin or allergies may not be able to use those sulphate shampoos etc., sometimes because of the sulphates themselves, sometimes because those shampoos typically contain other irritants and allergens, such as fragrances, and the same can be said of the conditioning products from those same brands. I also want to say that silicones don’t work for everyone. My experience has been the exact opposite of yours, I used to use silicones and my hair started feeling dry and brittle and actually breaking off at the ends. I remembered that when I had really damaged hair (from bleach) in high school I used to use ‘all natural’ products with incredible results. I have recently switched back to those kinds of products and seen a huge improvement (I did also chop off almost 3 inches of dry, damaged ends). 🤷♀️ For people who might have a similar hair type and skin concerns, I want to recommend this ingredient: coco-caprylate. Look for it in serums and oils especially. It’s an ester derived from coconut oil and it’s a very good ‘natural’ alternative to silicones, as well as to coconut oil, if you find that it’s too heavy on your hair and/or can clog your pores. You can also buy it pure if you like to make your own hair oil by mixing different oils together, and add it to your mixture. It’s really good if you want to create an oil-based serum to apply on dry hair that won’t make it look greasy or weigh it down too much. You can use it pure, by itself, as a serum as well. I’ve never tried that, but if you find that all oils, no matter how little you apply, make your hair somewhat greasy this might be a good alternative. Also, the best oil that I’ve found for hair that can’t usually absorb pure oils very well is Camellia oil, if you want something that can be applied to dry hair without making it greasy. I literally use one to two drops and apply it to the ends and lengths of my hair, focusing on the tips and working my way up. I brush it through with a boar-bristle brush and I don’t find that my hair is greasy at all, just shiny and conditioned. I still use other oils, like Argan and sweet Almond oil, at night, so that’s another tip for low-porosity hair: apply your oils at night (still, only use a couple drops, as described above) so that they have time to absorb. Usually when I do this my hair isn’t greasy in the morning, there is no visible residue from the oils. I do it every night, as it also helps protect my hair from friction etc. If that still doesn’t work for you but you want the benefits from those oils you can try looking for/making a coco-caprylate based serum as I mentioned above, or just using them as a pre-shower treatment, which will help protect the ends and lengths of your hair when you wash it. Be careful though, still only use a few drops, you don’t want to create build-up! That can lead to the sticky hair issue mentioned at the beginning of the video.

Thank you this is very helpful! I had really severe scalp psoriasis (controlled by medicine injections now) and I still have to be careful with my scalp or I’ll be sooo itchy. SLS and other primarily strong surfactant shampoos dry out my scalp just way too much. Silicones don’t work for me either, especially dimethicone. It’s so heavy on my hair and makes my curl pattern appear looser too. I’ve tried to go back to silicones and it just doesn’t work for me.

Hi Abbey, regarding Biotin supplements (as in the oral tablets), what a lot of people don't know is that they can throw-off your thyroid function and lead to an over-active thyroid. So, as you correctly pointed out, you really need to be advised by your GP to take biotin orally. This happened to me recently, I had been taking biotin supplements daily for about 2 months and when I got my regular bloods done my results came back indicating an overactive thyroid. My clever GP - guessing that I, like many peri-menopausal women, might be taking biotin to help with hair loss - asked me if I had been taken biotin supplements and immediately told me to stop. She said I would be better off taking iron (as my ferritin levels were low) in addition to vitamin D (in Ireland we are all chronically low in Vit D as the sun NEVER visits us!). I am about 2 months in and already my hair/skin feel and look healthier AND my anxiety/mood has improved dramatically. So just a quick side-note for everyone (not just peri-menopausal women!!). xxx
@yeahumkay3 ай бұрын
Biotin doesn't actually affect your thyroid, but it does interfere with the results of thyroid tests (the markers they use) - so your doctor can improperly adjust your medication, which would definitely affect your hair (and everything else) (edited for clarification)

For those with naturally wavy hair: I alternate between gentle shampoos and once a week or every two weeks a sulfate shampoo and this works well for my wavy (2B, low porosity, somewhat fine) hair. The only ingredient I avoid at this point is the accumulating type of silicone - dimethicone (this really is not good for my wavy hair). So I follow Abbey's recommendations and leave out what I know does not work for my hair. what I still haven't figured out is that my hair really does not seem to like blowdryers, it almost looses the waves if I blow dry and becomes very very dry, but becomes almost curly when left to air dry and looks much better - now this has some obvious issues interfering with lifestyle and etc. btw when it comes to "natural hair care" - conditioners containing shea butter are too heavy for my hair for example.

They are often just trying to hold onto the hair they still have, & are not coloring or using heat. Please always address their concerns with the knowledge that they are often past the stage of being able to regrow or renew their hair to its recent condition if they have a mishap. Don't think that women 65+ never suffer from losing so quickly their health/beauty, as they are trying to hold their health, lives, work, & families together. The condition of their hair can cost them much more dearly at work & in life than it can for a young woman. So your knowledge for them is extremely helpful, even if they never worried before about their looks.

I will say this too about a dry flakey scalp… sometimes it’s ingredient sensitivity or allergies! I’m one of the lucky folks actually allergic to SLS & it took me sooooo long to figure it out. In soaps it made me dry and itchy, I’d even get a rash around my mouth with some toothpastes (yes it’s in tons)… so sometimes switching to a gentle shampoo (I double cleanse) can help narrow down ingredients that are better tolerated.

The idea of a hair blower brush is great but unfortunately it causes a lot of breakage especially when you have fine hair. So I put mine away and I got another hair dryer.

@lorimoore5589 for me I do have very wavy hair. I usually blow dry with a round brush and sometimes I'll use a flat iron afterwards if I want more of a pin straight look.

Ugh! I thought it was just me doing something wrong. I have very fine, type 1/2A hair(very straight when below the bra strap length and slightly wavy with a layered hair cut/ above the bra strap length). I used the blow out brush and got major breakage from one usage, even with leave in conditioner and heat protection. The only way I don't see breakage when styling is letting my hair air dry 75%+ and then round brush/blow dryer on low. Takes FOREVER with my length now(at the middle of my butt but I'm only 5'2").

Hi Abbey! Your info is SOOO helpful and I've changed up so many things in my routine and have found a lot of success. One thing that I'd love for you to touch on our this hair care brands that come out with supplements: Are they worth it? Do they provide any value? Which ingredients (if any!) are good for hair growth? For example, I'm talking about Act + Acre, Nutrifol, Vegamour, and Wellbel. Thank you so much!! :)

I have a question you may know the answer, if Latisse is successful growing our lashes & eyebrows wouldn’t it hypothetically stimulate hair growth on our heads? I know for sure it works on lashes, and off label on brows depending on individual people. I used on brows after chemo but did so a year later to thicken them. I also know you can’t stop or you loose what you have grown. Let us know if you have any ideas on this subject. Thanks!

Regarding scalp itching, I also get that from products that contain ingredients I’m sensitive to like sodium chloride, anything comedogenic and coconut oil. I have a dry scalp but immediately get itchy and also break out on my scalp and face when I use these products. Unfortunately almost every drugstore conditioner has sodium chloride in it so I’m struggling to find a budget friendly conditioner I’m not allergic to but also makes my hair soft.

I don't use biotin but I do take collagen and I can really see the improvements it makes in my hair and nails. The kind that I take is the quick dissolve peptides by great lakes wellness. You can mix it into any drink like a smoothie or your coffee and it doesn't have a taste. . It's one of those supplements I don't want to go without after seeing the difference it makes superficially, also good for the joints plus, as a bonus, it contains protein.

Couldn’t frizz at the crown just be new growth? I mean, the growth cycle only lasts so long until the hair falls out naturally and a new one starts growing out. I have curly hair, and I have A LOT of short frizzy hairs at my crown. But they seem to be kind of pointy which makes me think that they aren’t broken hairs since that would make them look more blunt on the ends (if that makes sense).

I have dry hair and scalp and I made the worst mistake of going sulfate free and silicone free. I also put coconut oil on my hair (not pre-poo). OMG my hair was straight up straw!!! I thought it was damage, turns out I just needed a good wash. I got rid of gentle sulfate/silicone free shampoos and only used coconut oil only as pre-poo on ends, magical soft hair! Dry doesn't mean not using a real cleansing shampoo!!

To add more possible confusion but solutions to the mix, another reason for itchy scalp is dietary. Many many MANY people range from intolerant to allergic to things they consume daily. If you do it long enough you may not even realize diet is the issue. And unless you do an elimination diet, you’re not likely to figure out the culprit. That said, common aggravators: egg whites, coffee, grains (oat, wheat, rye, rice, etc.), raw vegetables (cooked less likely to trigger), et cetera. If you regularly get flashes of hives or intermittent itchy scalp, pretty strong indicator of dietary issue. Something to test. ❤❤

This is all super helpful! I would love to see you talk about shampoo bars… They seem to be all the rage right now. I tried one and ended up with that really dry but sticky and heavy hair so I went ahead and washed again with a salicylic acid, scalp treatment shampoo which is very clarifying! Problem solved. I am also one who tends to have truly dry scalp, and it is almost all over. I have noticed that some shampoos and conditioners will exasperate and I will feel itchy almost immediately after my hair dries. Other shampoo I can use and go days before I start To itch. Baby shampoo has actually been the best option for me so far. My face is very dry also and I need layers of a richer moisturizer. I am also postpartum…😅 and also acne prone! I would love to see more information about choosing a shampoo for those who have a dry scalp, and skin care for the scalp!

I love how we went through the same marketing wake-up call about “sulfate-free”… ❤😂 Oof! I went back to sulfates when I noticed, I was not even properly removing silicone haircare products. And it was those same effects I would experience. What spooked me out was how much it was synthetically pulling out my hair honestly… [in shampoos] Was the scariest experience. “Sulfate-free” is Very Synthetic & harsher than even sulfates! So immediately went back into clarifying sulfate shampoos. My only matter really is, I notice it lightens my hair so from naturally ash brown hair, into my blondes showing out more (which is fine but I question its longevity sometimes), as a genuine question, and two, more importantly, it’s needing some kind of scalp moisture support and even for the rest of my natural dry mid to end lengths because it is drying. I’d Love to know if you have any silicone oil or silicone-based (as serums are oil based & it’s not working for being a very curly haired texture & when heat styling : it can make or break a heat style for us immediately by evening or the next day* & I believe it’s the serum but I wonder there what scalp type that really is because I categorize it as dry or maybe even sensitive but I notice this theme when using serums that I have this reaction* -?- it weighs my straightened hair down & greases even if I’m only using the tiniest drop of serum particularly only really on the scalp* would appreciate insight there!) ~~ Any product suggestions of after heat styling products ✨ is appreciated, if any, thank you in advance! I preference silicone but that is nourishing or hydrating. And/or, is lightweight, and non-greasy but has to benefit dry (thick) hair. It’s more altered when straightened of course but it is my natural hair typing (thick & high density), with curls underneath the heat style. I’m just learning nowadays, truly, about scalp type. It’s a new hairdresser’s mention vs what I feel and notice of my own scalp (she claims it’s oily on the scalp and dry on the mid to end’s length: I had a pomade with natural oils as ingredients prior to going to the salon & I notice a theme of product culprits), when I see for myself, I notice normal but dry patch & signs of dry typing as well, and it may be categorized as maybe even sensitive because it’ll itch within time (usually by wash day), though, just naturally that’s always been (I do have sensitive skin so am not surprised). Not sure! I used to always think it was normal to prone to dryness. She acclaimed it as combination based off that description alone (I feel it’s wrong & possibly even snooty looking back). As I saw for myself (even my fam’s with dry typing).

Hey, thank you so much from rescuing me from all the ‘evil silicones and sulfates and parabens’ bs that I used to believe , my hair thanks you too! 😊 My question for extremely damaged (like bleached 4 times within 2month damaged) is: What do you think about applying lamellar water after applying a bond treatment? Be it K18, Olaplex, or a pre shampoo treatment like Elvive Bond Repair. My train of thought was, after having the bonds strengthened maybe using lamellar water to close the cuticles would be beneficial somehow? Or would there be some kind of weird interaction in terms of charges and ph and all that stuff that I love learning about but now realize cannot really use in a sentence 😂 I might’ve gotten the scientific part wrong but I guess you get what mean:)) Hope you see this, thanks again!

Hi, not sure if you've addressed why hair (my hair) gets so tangled after washing it? I gently brush through in shower, but by the time I add conditioning products with gentle scrunching with a t-shirt or soft material (I have wavy hair), my hair is tangled! My hair dries extremely fast as well, so sometimes I have to use a water sprayer after this due to drying/tangled/starting to frizz😮

100% agree about biotin supplementing BUT when I went to an animal based diet and started eating a lot more protein, collagen(in the form of ground beef) and animal fats (help heal/regulate female hormones) my hair started growing in the thickest it's ever been in my entire life. I've always had super fine hair that's embarrassingly thin and it's finally starting to have natural thickness to it without volumizing products 😊
