I kind of hate that I employ some similar strategies to Abby (undershirts, lower hemlines) because they make me more comfortable and I like how they look on me. But then, I also don't bash people who wear different things than me, so there's that going for me.

I’m so confused by these modesty videos. Everyone has different rules for modesty. There are no rules so Abby’s idea of modesty will be too sexual for others. Also, where is the line between attractive and alluring/sexual? I think that it’s in the guy’s head not about a woman’s clothes.

What’s sad is that if her video wasn’t steeped in judgement and a-holery, the advice would actually be pretty good, especially for younger people. ‘Don’t assume that a trend you like will stay in fashion so stock up then’ or ‘plunging necklines and slits that go to far up for your comfort don’t have to be dealbreakers because -insert strategies to wear them’ are both good advice. Kinda sad, really. :/
@KireiC3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this exactly! Tips to alter items slightly to fit you, or ideas of good items you can layer for coverage / comfort, or mix and match for different looks - it's solid fashion advice that has little to do with "respecting others with your modesty" and more to do with "how to look good and be comfortable in your clothes."

For ONCE, I'm going to give Abby here the benefit of the doubt and come at her advice with sincerity, because I do like to dress modestly both for aesthetic reasons AND sexual trauma reasons. Will update at the end of the video.
@mallowhoney3 жыл бұрын
1. The flesh toned undershirt is OKAY but a pastel or white one may "break up the V neck" but they layering looks delicate and elegant. Consider your camisole/undershirt an accessory if it's worn to be seen and match the color to your outfit in a complimentary way. 2. Just buy dresses without slits you goddamn alien. Sewing up the slit in a dress will inevitably ruin the silhouette and make it look super weird and in many cases it's gonna be a nightmare to walk in. 3. OBVIOUSLY. There's always something on the shelves that's modest but if something pretty and modest is on-trend, buy it up. Then stop worrying about trends and just wear what you like to wear. 4. fuck you abby baggy sweaters and cardigans are cute as fuck. modesty can also mean hiding your figure, abby. don't be a jerk, abby. 5. Not good advice. A dress that's too short for comfort can be paired with leggings, shorts, or even a long skirt. It's very granny chic to wear a flowy long skirt under a shorter dress, that's called layering. It's mori-kei if you're cultured in Japanese trends. It's aesthetic and sooooo comfy and cats will hide under your skirt, it's great. If you find a dress you like, you can make it modest with some creativity, usually without sewing up the side of the dress.

Being "modest" is okay. The problem is thinking your "modesty" makes you better than everybody else, when it is entirely a subjective and superficial standard that is promoted by blind consumerism and an unhealthy desire to appear "upper class". But hey if you simply like having the aesthetic of modesty and treat it only as such, then all the power to you. Also keep in mind that Abby, while looking "modest" also looks like a plastic robotic android and not a real human, so it might not appeal to everyone's taste

*flesh-tone undershirt? But what if you can't find undershirts/camisoles that are the same color as your skin? Is she saying that wearing undershirts/camisoles that aren't the same color as your skin isn't modest? [Lol. I kid. But seriously, it isn't her business on whether one wears something under their v-neck shirt or not. Also, Ann Taylor isn't cheap.] *I guarantee that Abby doesn't actually sew up any of the pre-made slits on any of her dresses and only saying that to please her viewers and sponsors. [Doing that can ruin a dress and the entire look if you aren't careful, especially if you are getting those dresses from places like Chanel, Ann Taylor, Express, Neil Gaiman, etc. I also bet that she doesn't do any sewing or alterations herself.] *Shop when the trends are modest? That's just another version of shopping when you find a deal you like and shop at places that contain stuff you like. Also, what if you have to do emergency shopping for special, formal, or important events? Another thing, aren't a lot of women's fashion in medieval Europe prone to showing a lot of cleavage in certain periods of time? *Wear clothes that fit? That's just basic clothes advice everyone gets. She's not saying anything new. She's against women and girls showing too much skin yet also against them wearing baggy, loose clothing. Basically, she just want women and girls to wear clothes that are feminine, don't show too much skin, and are form-fitting (since she keeps emphasizing "showing their figure"). Also, not everyone lives in a area that has a tailor (let alone a tailor that isn't costly and is culturally sensitive). *Literally no one looks at the hem of the dress before the top of the dress; including Abby herself. Dress has to look good if you even want to consider trying it on. What maybe be long/short on one person may be long/short on another person - people come at various heights and weight distributes different on different bodies. Also, looking at the bottom of the rack doesn't always tell you how long the dress is if they are using a hanger that lifts off a portion of of the bottom of the dress off the ground.
@shelbyschroder41403 жыл бұрын
So on the tailoring thing. Ingoring the modesty message entirely because screw societies expectations. I buy fewer clothes because I get ones I really really like tailored. I'm more likely to wear what fits and love all the clothes in my closet. We all should have access to better quality clothes and not kill the planet with fast fashion. But at the same time it's not always accessible to lower income people. Which should be considered a crime. We need clothes to protect us.

I just realised she never uses pronouns when she’s talking about certain subjects, she just uses the name of the subject over and over again. “So I saw a dress with a slit, and I don’t like slits so I sewed the slit…” “I see a dress I like on a rack, but I look at the top of the rack instead of the bottom of the rack…” I don’t know if she’s padding out the run time on her videos, or if she just can’t speak like a human, but either way it’s exhausting to listen to.
