What’s up! Today I’m sharing the science-backed best “diet” for weight loss. AKA if I had to do my weight loss journey all over again - what I would eat, how I would calculate calories, meal plan, and which habits I would focus on to start losing weight.

CALCULATOR USED

-------------------------------
CHOCO CHIP ZUCCHINI BREAD BAKED OATS
(WHAT YOU NEED)
½ cup rolled oats
1 scoop vegan protein powder - I use this one: tidd.ly/3BD0zWU
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp baking powder
½ cup almond milk, or as needed to stir
1 small zucchini, or about ½ cup shredded
1 tbsp mini chocolate chips
(WHAT TO DO)
1-Blend oats into flour. Pour into a small mixing bowl, then whisk together with protein powder, cinnamon, and baking powder.
2-Stir in almond milk until smooth, then add zucchini and continue mixing until evenly distributed.
3-Spoon mixture into a small greased baking dish, then top with chocolate chips and bake for 25-30 minutes at 350F.
.
THAI CRUNCH CABBAGE SALAD
(WHAT YOU NEED) - amounts can be adjusted to suit your needs!
(WHAT TO DO)
1-Preheat oven to 400F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
2-Drain and rinse can of chickpeas, then evenly spread across the baking sheet. Spraying with cooking spray + sprinkling with salt, as desired. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until desired crispness is reached.
3-While chickpeas are baking - cut cabbage in half, then cut the base to remove the stem. One half at a time, slice cabbage as thin as you can so it comes out as “ribbons”. Set aside.
4-Slice green onions, then dice remaining veggies and separate each into its own storage container.
5-Portion out the veggies and chickpeas you want, toss together, then add in your protein of choice + serve with peanut dipping sauce!
Store leftover veggies in separate containers for up to 3-5 days in the fridge and enjoy!
SPICY PEANUT DRESSING / DIPPING SAUCE
(WHAT YOU NEED)
3 tbsp fish sauce
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp rice vinegar
1 tbsp sriracha sauce
¼ cup powdered peanut butter - I use this: amzn.to/2WOIAhi
¼ cup honey or stevia 1:1 baking blend - I use this: amzn.to/2YnQHBZ
NOTE: depending which powdered peanut butter you use, you may need to add more to thicken this up. I’d add 2 tbsp at a time, up to 4 additional tbsp. This will thicken the longer you sit it, so maybe blend the night before if you like your sauce a little thicker!
(WHAT TO DO)
Blend ingredients until smooth, then store in an airtight container for up to 5-7 days in the fridge.
.
BAKED CHICKY NUGGIES
I followed this recipe www.ambitiouskitchen.com/cris... then served with honey mustard dipping sauce + sweet potato fries and roasted broccoli
HONEY MUSTARD DIPPING SAUCE
(WHAT YOU NEED)
½ cup plain Greek yogurt
2 tbsp yellow mustard
1 tbsp dijon mustard
2 tbsp honey
½ tbsp lemon juice
(WHAT TO DO)
Blend ingredients until smooth, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for 5-7 days.

When I struggled with an eating disorder I started watching Abby's workout routines and eventually the nutrition videos. Being reassured that I'm not a freak for being constantly hungry, that I need a lot more protein in my diet and that my priority should be to feel good rather than deprived really reeeeallllyy helped me. Thank you Abby, keep doing what you're doing, I'm sure you've helped a lot of people like me xx

I used to be overweight + slowly creeping into the obese category, and started working on my weightloss during the pandemic. So far I've lost about 15kgs and I'm about 5kgs away from where I want to maintain. But recently it's gotten so hard and I'm always so hungry now. I haven't tracked my intake and have been eating not so good food in about 2 weeks and last I checked it looks like I gained back a kilo or 2. It's kind of discouraged me a little, so I'm really glad you uploaded this when you did. Cleared up a lot of things for me and helped me feel better about wanting to eat a little more now.

I’ve been tracking calories (calorie deficit) for over a year now and have lost 35lbs. I’m back in all the clothes I loved when I first met my husband. I’m physically disabled so can only do little exercise so I’m proof that what you eat (and drink!!) are so so important in weight loss. It’s not all about exercise.

Thanks fir sharing. I can get the workouts done with no problem. Its the food that's an issue. Don't get me wrong, I don't do processed food, but wholefoods and cooking from scratch etc. I'm known as a health freak around my work colleagues. But since menopause I find its a struggle with bellybutton. I tried different things: keto, intermittememt fasting etc but feel like it's all a chore. Can you share if you are pre or postmenopausal and what worked for you food wise? Glad you reached your goals

I'm in maintenence right now after going from 310 lbs to 165 in roughly 4 years. (5'10" female btw) I find videos like this helpful because it reinforces the path I've taken and will continue to be on the rest of my life. After losing weight for so long it can be hard to no longer see the scale change since that's what I was used to. However for the past year or so I've been focusing a lot more on resistance training. Though the scale is no longer moving, I'm still noticing results from my workouts and eating habits and it's a good reminder to not focus too much on the number and pay attention to how your daily routine makes you feel. Anyways, I know it's a lengthy comment but best of luck and love to anyone on a health journey. It truly is possible, and you got this! 💛💪

I did the math along with you for calories and I have been seriously under eating. This is totally the reason why I’m exhausted, and I binge eat. I was eating roughly 500 calories less. I had refused to count calories because I felt it was unhealthy for me. But I think it’s doing the opposite, where it helps me understand that if I eat enough (of good food) with the right macros I can feel satiated and continue with my workouts and health goals. Thank you!!!! 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

I’ve lost 100+ lbs with 30 more to go since 2017. I worked on slowly increasing and leveling up my healthy behaviors and making them habits I could sustain all along the way and worked on my binge eating issues and prioritized that whenever it popped up so as not to regain. That meant taking maintenance breaks along the way and learning to no overly restrict. It’s a process and there is no timeline! It takes as long as it takes and sometimes that’s the hardest part mentally cuz it’s a bit boring lol

I have been so lucky, fortunate, and grateful that my mom has always been good and consistent with our diet growing up. I am very blessed. Things I did change when I started wanting to fix my stiffness and overall pain and to feel more fit and strong was exercise (I did not move at all...it's hard to be more active when you're a violin performer and violin teacher). Once I built that habit, I changed my diet. I upped my intake of veggies and protein. I have carbs every meal otherwise I spend the day dizzy and lightheaded and sick. Protein keeps me full when I'm on the run from 9am-9pm with only a 30 min lunch break. I also discovered I prefer eating 3 large meals and dislike small or snacking meals so I plan that accordingly. And it works for me! 3 year progress - trial and error (cutting carbs was a big and worse mistake I made - almost crashed my car one time going to work) but I have lost 35 lbs and have been able to maintain it even when things go so busy I can't do my daily exercise (sad days - it helps with stress) and diet isnt great. It's easy to get back on track when the habits and lifestyle is built in slowly. -PS I am so sorry. This is so long 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've been on and off the fitness and weight loss wagon for years and years. Just started AGAIN on September 1st. I have a request for a video because of the way my body reacts to different sorts og carbohydrates. If I eat white rice, regular potatoes, bread, oats etc I feel full. But if I eat all kinds of pasta and sweet potatoes I get full at the moment the food are consumed, but only 10 minutes after I feel like my stomach "eats itself" and I'm near starving to death! Why is this happening? Sweet potatoes is supposed to be a good carb source, but for me the regular potato keeps me fuller for longer. Is there a scientific explanation for this? 🤔😊

Hey Abby! I’m a new subscriber and a fan of how you describe weight loss/muscle gains in scientific forms (while also explaining everything in laymen’s terms) I find so many weight loss websites, magazines, video etc, to be so confusing on what I should actually be doing to lose fat on my body. My workout schedule is Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 30 minutes of weight training and 30 minutes of cardio. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday - an hour of cardio. Sunday is my rest day. My main question is how long should I actually be working out for fat loss since I am an endomorph? (I see so many different answers to this question which is why I’m asking lol) Current diet is low carb, drink nothing but water (except for my morning coffee) and i fast 18/6

Hey girl. I just finished a fitness challenge if you call it with a trainer that I started last February until June. And I lost 20 lbs. I was on a strict 1200-1300 calorie meal plan and was strength training 3 times a week. I finished and immediately started binging again. I gained back all the weight within the 4 months after. I realized the workout plan was solid but the meal plan diet part was not the best. Although I find it very insightful to see how many calories are in the food I eat and to give me a good base knowledge to eyeball things I do think. That 1200 is not right for me long term as I struggle with binge eating and I must admit I was freaking hungry all the time. I find having balanced macros helps me avoid hunger cravings and right now I am doing around 1500 calories and tracking it and it seems to be good as far as not being hungry. Hopefully now that I started the workouts again I will see some good changes in my body. However watching your videos just kind of clarified that the time in my life that I was happiest with my body was when I was eating what I wanted and listening to my body’s cues. And just being mindful of what I felt was the best way to fuel my body, none of this whole being scared to eat an avocado because it’s so high in calorie bullshit. I was so skinny and eating avocados regularly lol and nuts and hummus and I never counted a calorie and I felt free. I hope to get back to that.

Do you have advice on how long to do the compound movement workouts? I was doing well. Then I ended up getting a back spasm that was incapacitating. I couldn't really work out for awhile so I was just doing short easy walking workouts just to keep my heart healthy and stretching to help with healing. I am much better now but feel like I need to start from scratch. You can also see my comment in your metabolic damage video.

At 48 I have been up and down with my weight. Now I am a diabetic taking insulin (a lot) but my A1C is 6.4. However weight doesn't come off like it use to. My goal right now is eating healthier food and exercise in hopes to lower the amount of insulin I need and then hopefully the weight will come off. I am making small changes in my eating (like packing my own lunch) and I get up at 5AM to exercise. This is my second week. I only exercise for 15 minutes because I am very obese...like I am 2 average humans. I do a little aerobics and resistance training. I am just trying to build habits and add new habits slowly. I hope I am headed in the right direction. So much differing information it gets confusing.

I completely agree, there is so much information out there and so many different ideas of what is right for you that it’s hard to chose a solid path to follow. I do like listening to the science behind it all, although processing all of that information into what can work for me gets convoluted. I’m in your same shoes, trying to find an easier path to follow after yo-yo’ing for so long that I want to make small changes leading to bigger results. Good luck to you. For you low carb diet is a must. Forget this video. keep carb intake under 50 grams per day. Dont track calories or macros but just eat veggies and fatty meat until you are full. Goal is try to only eat 2 meals a day with no snacks in between (eventually). Then slowly transition into ketogenic/carnivore/ketovore way of eating which will bring total carbs under 20 grams per day. Exercise is good but its a minor point to focus on in the beginning. Doing this will reverse you will improve or reverse diabetes in 6mo. Check out Dr. Ken Berry about keto/ketovore/carnivore.

Hi Abby! I lost weight about three years ago and have maintained it. My weight is healthy. I strength train 4 days a week and feel strong and good. I would like to lower my body fat percentage by 5 to get a bit leaner. That's just five pounds but man! I have tried several times. I can take it off, but can't keep it off. Tbh, sometimes I can't even take it off. I usually try a 25% deficit, but I think this time I'll try your somewhat lower deficit, which ends up being about 17.5 for me. Slow and steady wins the race?
@morganbaldwinmiller

I've never been overweight but I've never had the slightly more lean body that I've always wanted. Lately I've been very frustrated trying to lose just a few pounds of body fat, especially because I feel like I've been doing everything right. My weight isn't going UP (it's gone down very slowly, like, 3lbs-since-May type of slow) so I know I'm not eating surplus and bulking but none of my measurements are going down and I look exactly the same. I'm going to start including more cardio but I'm worried it'll make me feel too hungry. The internet is full of all of these "simple" things to lose weight and yet it's such a struggle.

I'm always unsure of activity level when using these equations. I'm a bartender in a fast paced restaurant. I work 6 days a week. Three days a week I'm walking/fast walking/shaking drinks/lifting for 6 hours a day, and for 3 days I'm doing all that for an average of 10 to 12 hours a day. I do not exercise outside of work. Would this still be considered moderate activity?
@esmee6308
@esmee6308 2 жыл бұрын
I work as a bartender as well, occasionally take extra shifts as a waitress, I do dedicated cardio, walk often especially on days off and lift weights 6x a week. (And yes, I don't have a social life outside of work / gym :p) Bar shifts appear to burn around the same as a 1h jog, 2-3h of brisk walking, more than waitressing-shifts, lifting burns about the same as walking but can't sustain it for 3h. This is for my body however, I walk relatively fast, do a lot of full body movements behind the bar (our bar is way too fucking wide...) and am above average in muscle mass. For most people's perspective that's more than 'moderately' active. That being said these are estimates from experience, since I never do just one type of activity, even on work days I lift and often get 10k steps in before my shift by just going about my day. But I have had to pay quite close attention to it the first few months since my weight was dropping due to work, maintaining well now.

You know honestly if you're working hard during a shift or if it's a slow day and you're not really doing much. Through the summer when we're really busy I count each shift as a 'workout' in terms of how active I am and in winter when we slow down I only count maybe the weekend shifts. I always lose weight in summer because of it, and gain some in winter, unless I'm really careful about what I eat. Some calculators give a physical job option, but I tend to go for light or hard exercise depending on the time of year. I'd rather underestimate as your body does get used to working long shifts on your feet.

Hey abby, i wanna ask you something. If we do resistance training and calorie deficit same time doesn’t it cause muscle loss?

The main struggle for me with high fiber is for sure the bloating/gas. I haven’t watched the full video yet so you might mention that but does anyone experience that?

same here! I eat a pretty high fibre diet and experience a LOT of bloating, especially with certain vegetables. It can be quite uncomfortable :/

I struggled with this A LOT earlier this year when I was going through some gut issues. My best advice is to build gradually, pay attention to if certain foods trigger bloating more than others, and if you’re able - invest in a high quality probiotic 🤗

Question: how did you get the number for the weight loss cal per day? After the percentage of cal deficit per day? The number I’m referring to is 1528 cal/per day if that makes more sense
@thatgreenpistachio
@thatgreenpistachio 2 жыл бұрын
that’s the number you get if you wanted to lose 1% of body weight per week for that hypothetical woman. imo thats too restrictive because it requires 850 calorie deficit per day.

I am at a point where I really want to change my habits. I gained a lot of weight due to medication and really want to lose it. I got some pictures back from my sisters wedding and I hate how I look. I know aesthetics aren't most important, but I want to look & feel like a badass heroine and feel more comfortable in my body (and hopefully help out my symptoms)

Hi Abby! Thank you for making this, I really appreciate your content. Could you please help me understand how to calculate my own caloric deficit? I was understanding the example until you got to the “Maintenance = 2378 Calories/Day”… I’m just confused on where that number came from because I thought it would be 2975. - I know I’m missing something but I’d really appreciate your response so I can apply it. -Thank you!
@thatgreenpistachio
@thatgreenpistachio 2 жыл бұрын
she’s talking about calories per week and calories per day simultaneously so it’s easy o lose track. 2975 is the calorie deficit for the whole week. what abby doesn’t show on the screen is that if the hypothetical woman is at 2378 calories per day, which x7 is 16,646 calories calories per week consumed to maintain her weight. 16,646 - 2975 = 13,671 calories per week for deficit. 13,671/7 = 1953 calories per day for deficit. that’s the weekly math to justify the 1lb per week weight loss rationale (well 0.85lb in that case)

Wondering if you've ever done a video on the science behind digestible calories if that is a real thing. Recently found a peanutbutter that claims only 28 digestible calories. In fine print is says actual calories 200. The claim is because of the high fiber the remaining calories pass through. Is this trustable, does the science support it?

I guess I just don't understand :( at 1% per week my calculation is 1,234 calories. At .5% it's still only 1,626. Then there's all this talk about "1200 calories isn't enough!" And I've heard the same of the 1500-1600 range. So do I follow the calculator or not? How do you adjust these based on days with workouts vs days without? *sigh*

On an unrelated note. The conclusion part of the video show you with your natural eyebrows. They are beautiful. PLEASE, PLEASE stop painting on eyebrows. It looks like you used a marker. They don't look natural or attractive. You can fill in your natural eyebrows with a LITTLE bit of eye pencil to enhance them, but stop painting them on. You are beautiful!
