A flashy ABC promo circa 1969-1970 (I'm not sure of the exact year) for their Evening News, anchored by Howard K. Smith and Harry Reasoner.

Howard K. Smith was criminally underrated due to his peers at the other major stations.

Well, this ad did neither Smith or Reasoner any favors.

I remember watching the Smith / Reasoner broadcast when I was five years old. It's great to see this advanced (for the time) promo in 2016.

I find it terrifying, at least, not just 'cause of the sheer information volume on this single ad, but also 'cause this one-minute ad gives most information than a full program today.

Harry Reasoner left CBS News for ABC News in early December 1970 and stayed there before "going home" in mid-summer 1978. Early on, he did a half-hour Saturday early evening program called "The Reasoner Report," meant to imitate "60 Minutes" (of which with Mike Wallace, Reasoner was one of the original co-hosts/co-editors in September 1968. Joan Richman had her ABC News producer interlude during the early years of Reasoner at ABC, before also returning to CBS News, in her case via CBS Sports.

That was the better ABC news. Today's is not so good. Not the same without Peter Jennings.

I'll say 1970 or a little later. It uses the Avant Gard type face at the end, which wasn't introduced until 1970.

Right. This would no doubt be pretty late in 1970 (I think that was when Reasoner displaced Frank Reynolds as the New York anchor {Howard K. Smith being based in Washington})

@torgman Yeah, it's 70. I remember this vividly.

This would have been. Harry Reasoner took over as Howard K. Smith's co-anchor in late 1970.

@sto59 I'm wondering the same thing. It's a great percussion ensemble tune.

Is the music by Steve Katz of Blood, Sweat & Tears ?

Was this done by the guy who did those short films (like '68 in review) for the Smother Brothers show?

They'd have been better of by using whoever animated "Yellow Submarine", LOL.

looks like a direct copy of the original. Is it? Pretty awesome if so. I ask because it isn't followed by anything else as if recorded from TV

Actually the video can't be later than early 1972 (one of the names listed in the Washington section was Bill Lawrence {ABC's White House Correspondent at the time}; who died from a heart attack while covering the New Hampshire primary that year).

robatsea2009, this was included in the ABC 1971 Fall Preview. Look up part two of the fall preview upload here on KZbin and you'll see it included in the package.

@gurimrippa It was 1970. Are you REALLY surprised? Women's Liberation was in its infancy and big time journalism was still a man's profession.

Would love to know if the person(s) responsible for this ever went on to do work in motion picture opening credits.

The way this is edited, they could've moved straight from this to making music videos! Not even the earlier videos shown on MTV are this exciting or tightly edited; I think you'd have to wait until late 1982 - early 1983 for that. To be that cutting edge... it's amazing.

Forget CONTENT, This promo makes the National News of 69-70 look even SILLIER than today (2021). Hell. I would NOT watch this then as an adult. They MIGHT have had good coverage, But I would have had to been on LSD to think that THIS was going to be a "grown-up" news program. And I grew up in the 1970s...On CBS....

The intro alone is enough media bias.

My gawd, This is a SO bad, It's a reminder that TV "news" was just as much of a stupid "entertainment" show THEN as it is NOW. The graphics and "music" were no doubt COVERTLY placed by radio people and newspapermen to make SURE that NO ONE would watch TV News EVER. 😜
