Because the reason she lost it was a lien put on her house for non payment of a service. That's the law. If someone does work for you on your house and you don't pay the full amount, the law states that they can take your house.

This is truly unfortunate, but you need to read your paperwork. I have had to fight my own parents to prevent them signing something like this to get some extra money. I ended up giving them the money to avoid their being scammed. If you have family that doesn't read paperwork, you need to keep an eye out for this. I doubt she will get anything back.
