This is a problem that Chase could easily address. Knowing how this scam works, they could simply update the software to close out automatically once money is dispensed, making it necessary for you to have to tap again if you want to do anything else. This shows a lack of concerns for their customers.
@photonjones5908
@photonjones5908 Жыл бұрын
The software could simply limit cash to one withdrawal per tap. You wouldn't have to tap again to do anything else,, you would only need to tap again if you wanted more cash. That would solve this.

It's not the tap feature, it's the functionality of the ATM. Always make sure everything is exited out before leaving the ATM.
@darrennew8211

It's the functionality of the ATM. When you insert your card, it gives your card back before it gives you the money, because too many people take the money they came for and walk off and leave their card. If you deposit, it often asks if you want something else, and most people take the withdraw last. But for sure, if you're too stupid or flustered to make sure it's asking for the next person's card before you walk off, well, ignorance is curable but stupid is supposed to hurt.
@ginsu101

@@darrennew8211 it's my understanding that most people are used to the card with the pin. Even if u leave after your initial transaction, you must enter pin for any new transaction. Crazy to think that a multi billion dollar bank chain didn't have the brains to realize that most people automatically presume that an ATM transaction is closed and finalized after taking their cash from the ATM. Instead, a stupid screen pops up after taking their cash and asks if you want to do anything else. Leaving their account totally vulnerable to the next person in line at the ATM.

Didn’t you listen? Using the tap feature, you’re required to enter your PIN number for each transaction, the flaw was letting some creepo stranger hover over your shoulder. I had someone walk up next to me to use the ATM next to me, then pretended her bank card didn’t work. I was attempting to use Apple Wallet to withdraw money, and she grumbled about her card not working, and asked me for help. I pointed to the tap sign and ignored her completely afterwards. In hindsight, I suspect she went through all that because she wanted to get my PIN. But I wasn’t about to do anything while someone blatantly stood right next to me and staring at me. I have heard of it occurring when one individual makes a purchase at a store, for example, 200 for groceries at Walmart, and the next day they call and say that they didn't authorize said transaction and somebody "stole" their debit card but after investigations, you can clearly see them on camera make the purchase and lying about it. When we catch them lying about transactions that they did authorize but claim they didn't, we basically close their account and send them a check for whatever balance they had. And even if an ATM requires a pin for every transaction I would still make sure to log out so no one can walk up and see my account regardless if they can't do anything. It's common sense. Honestly, a pinhole camera placed in the right spot can do all the looking for them and I'd be willing to bet that leaving the transaction window open wasn't the whole story. There are RFID readers that can pick up that signal if close enough. Once the ATM powers on the RFID chip in your card, a simple scan can pick up the information. And with a camera capturing your PIN they now have access to your account. I could be wrong. Some people are way too trusting. As for me though, if you get too close to me at an ATM or in a store when I'm checking out, I am going to say something. If someone ever takes my card out of my hand to, "try and help me" I promise, they are going to be in need of some help.

It happened to me last month , thankfully I tried to make the transaction while the bank was open. I was going on vacation so went to A T M out front of bank it said transaction complete but no money came out then a receipt that said technical problems , I immediately went inside of the bank and gave them the receipt that came out of the machine and I was escorted to their office and was told I couldn't take out the amount I wanted to withdraw and had to wait for security clearance from the main headquarters after waiting for an hour still no answers but was told to go ahead on my vacation and everything would be ok in a few minutes a hour later while I was on the road I got a call from the branch saying everything was ok my money was in my account. No! when I stopped and went to check into the hotel my card was declined and by that time the banks were closed so I had to sleep in my car I'm a 80 yr old female having to sleep in 100 degree temp in AZ untill the bank opened and then spent 3 hrs on the phone being put threw different departments before I was told to use my card again. I finally got my money but they put a hold on any balance I had in my account. Now my vacation plans were ruined and I turned around and had to go home. I went into the branch that screwd me over and said they had no control over what happened and couldn't use my account until it was resolved. Three days later my account was reopened. I was told I would receive a letter with an apology and the reason but a month has gone by and nothing from them. Not even on my bank statement does it show the transaction even being made. No apology for destroying my vacation and sleeping in my car or anything on my hard copy of that transaction appears. If I had the money to sue I would but at my age I'd probably be dead before it ever got settled. Closed my account today just another inconvenience because that was the closest bank to me other's are quite future to go if I have to do transactions and change all my personal accounts that had automatic payments coming out. Just a nightmare and so much stress.

Since the manager knew the machine was glued up, she should've closed that machine down. Or either place a note stating the customer, using the tap feature, needs to complete their transactions when they see the screen stating, "Would you like to do something else?" How is this even a thing, the bank is asleep at the wheel and blaming customers for their own stupidity. In the UK, if using NFC to carry out ATM transactions, they get you to repeatedly Tap your card for each subsequent request to prove the card is still present to authorize the request for withdrawal. Sheer incompetence on their part, not the customers in failing to implement basic security

This is actually pretty genius social engineering and vulnerability exploitation. It’s too bad that their isn’t better fraud protection for scams like this. The bank should have closed the ATM down to prevent further victim losses.

I can't help but appreciate the ingenuity of people who put in the kind of effort some scammers will put into figuring these scams out, but I can't help but wonder how much better the world would be if they applied that intelligence, talent and ingenuity to bettering society instead of being leaches.

They need to add some sensors into the card slot to detect this. Like if one particular ATM fails to read cards a number of times, it will display an out of service error on screen and turn on a silent alarm to alert technicians of a possibly tampered ATM.

I'm confused. I thought all ATMs had cameras. Couldn't they just look at the footage of when the card was used?

What I don't get is why Chase apparently can't look at the security cameras to validate if their customer was still standing at the ATM or not instead they denied the customers their money back from an inconsistent withdrawal process if people aren't used to saying yes or no at the end of their withdrawal than what the heck did they change it for with the quick tap feature.
@sblijheid

Because they left tge session open. You must log out after you're done and these people did not do that. The customer is 100% at fault here and virtually every bank scam. Laziness and ignorance do not absolve you from your responsibility.

It seems silly that people wouldn't wait to close out the withdrawal window. It doesn't need to be "tap to pay." ALL ATM transactions will be open to manipulation, whether card or tap, if you don't close out the transaction. For me personally, I would want a paper receipt of the transaction, too, which generally doesn't print until you close out. 🤷
@dancheb
@dancheb Жыл бұрын
It is totally a software usability issue and a faulty software design. When you are using the chip, your card is kept inserted until the whole transaction concludes. After you get your card back, you are guaranteed to be logged out of your account. When you use the tap method, it is much easier to forget or not realize that the account is still being open and walk away.

It's also why most ATMs will return your card before they give you the cash. The number of people who would take their cash and leave their card is astoundingly high.

@dancheb chase actually has you remove the card prior to getting the cash. You can further choose to have an email confirmation, printed receipt or make another transaction. Me, myself. I wait until the closing window chime. The only problem I have with chase is in how you can catch a pending transaction and they won't do any reversal until it goes through, then it takes at least 3-5 more business days for you to get your money back.

It certainly took these reporters long enough to get to the point. Early on they referred to thieves getting people to use the tap feature but I was wondering what that has to do with anything. How does using tap allow thieves access to a user's account? It was only at 2:30 when it was explained. This has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time with the media. Either they relegate important information to near the end of an article or in some cases don't report it at all.

There are cameras on each ATM. Banks can work with law enforcement to see who was behind the victims and if it’s the same person.

This is a flaw in the consistency of operation in the Chase ATMs. Chase should make all of their customers whole and rush a software patch out to their ATMs and consider deactivating the RFID readers on their ATMs in the meantime.

This is misinformation. This is not an issue with the tap feature. Tap is actually more secure than swiping or putting a chip in. Also, it seems like these people are really dumb and not exiting when it prompts you to exit. Please don't walk away when you're not done at the ATM. It's just dumb
