You may be forgiven for assuming the world’s leading manufacturer of Ducati bevel drive engine parts would live in a bustling city, perhaps in Italy or the United States, somewhere central and close to consumers.
But in fact, this talented engineer and self-described “petrol head” lives in Nannup, deep in the forests of south-west WA.

Brook Henry is world famous when it comes to Ducatis, I had no idea he lives in Nannup, used to go there regularly when the timber mills were working. Mike Hailwood was the best racer of his time, saw him at Brands Hatch around 1968 on the Honda 6. The IoM TT win on the Ducati shows just how good he was. My brother and I both had Ducatis in the 1970s, me on a yellow 750S and his was a 900SS when they first came to Australia.

Wonderful stuff - what a man! (Hailwood and Brook!) I watched Hailwood in the 1967 Senior TT from Hilbery when he was riding that ill-handling 500 Honda. I have never seen before or since any rider with so much bike control. The rear wheel skipped left and right continuously at around 150mph on the straight!

The Ducati Master at work. Really interesting vid about an iconic bike first brought to my attention at 15 when a friend's brother rode into his driveway on one. WOW! Was our obvious reaction to a unique looking and sounding bike, I'll never forget that summer's day and the Ducati's bright red/green paintwork.

I purchased my Darmah the weekend Mike the Bike won Isle of Man in 1978. It just happened that a telex came into the dealer informing them, as we were finalizing the deal. Still looking like new in the garage with approximately 24,000 miles on her.

Interesting fact...the Conti exhausts on a standard 900SS were too loud for the IoM TT. Hailwood raced with Triumph Bonneville silencers painted black on his bike.

If Singer can sell £1m restomod Porsches on an application only basis, you could never build enough of these to satisfy the demand out there... The demand for skills like these is far outstripped by the availability. Take note kids, if you love these types of things then there's a world of bespoke manufacturing out there begging for people who want to learn how to do it.

I had no idea the race 900 MHR had a special engine outside normal production. I have read that some racers took factory engines of that era, and highly modified the crankshafts, and cylinder heads, believe the heads are probably the most unique in this instance.
@jackgreen9062
@jackgreen9062 Ай бұрын
It was actually the NCR works up the road from the Ducati factory that built the NCR race bikes.The engines in particular were a special build series. I think there were about 40 of them built. LThey were nothing like the MHR replicas built by Ducati at the factory. The crankcases were a narrow sump design with a space and spigot for a spin on oil filter. Modern Ducati air cooled twins use the spin filter to this day. Everything in the NCR engine was drilled and or otherwise lightened. Not so the MHR production bike. I built a race motor in 1983-4 based on the same specs. It took us months but it did deliver. Mr Henry builds a complete complianced round case based bike, based on the NCR engine and the 1974 ‘GreenFrame’which you can order. It is in fact far superior to the MHR. the 12 MHR-NCR replicas built by Henry are really NCR Scudaria works replicas as modified by Steve WynnSPORTS Motorcycles in England. Not to be confused with MHR replicas. There is much more to the story than this report has stated.

That is awesome news! Long may he continue. The standard Hailwood Replica was a most enjoyable ride with its willing engine, long wheelbase and Conti silencers, but that race bike must be fantastic.

One point of confusion; the press reports after Mr. Hailwood's IoM win stressed that the Sports MC Ducati's motor was a perfectly standard motor available any customer. This detail made Mike's win even more extraordinary. It also may explain why the motor blew up as Mike took the flag.
