as much as I love the idea behind ARCH motorcycles (the keanu reeves bike) I'd take this over the ARCH every day of the week. a bespoke motorcycle that replicates one of the coolest ducati's ever with better, safer materials and its less expensive? who wouldn't want this bike! thanks to jay and especially to Vee Two for keeping these wonderful, soulful bikes alive.

They prolly thumbed it down because Jay 2:44 - 3:50 still doesn't understand how desmodromic valve mechanism works! Jay thinks it works by "bevels", but bevel gears are the gears shown used to merely right angle the drive shaft and camshaft... and is also used for non-desmo OHC Ducati engines... desmodromic works by rocker arms (not "gears" ) that both open and close the valves... relying on tiny valve springs to only hold the valves fully sealed closed...

It's the Desmodromic valve actuation that eliminates the valve float since it has no valve springs that actuate on the valve. The bevel drive is for cam timing accuracy.

I own the Ducati darmah. Desmodromic valve actuation used to be the thing but now we have engines that reliably rev. to 14k rpm with no issues. The bevel drive is a left over from aircraft engines. Highly complex to set up. Chains and belts do a better job only cheaper. The bevel twins almost put Ducati in bankruptcy due to high cost of manufacture. I love the bevel ducks but the new stuff is infinitely better.

I'm a East Coast rider . I have my best riding brotherS move out West in 1999. I bring it up because we started doing week long rides out west. I've done at least 20,000 miles out West. Here's what I love about Jay. Every ride we ever did started at LAX and than through the canyons stopping at the world famous biker spot "the Rock Store. Two times I showed up, I met Jay Leno. I watched him on a Vincent that was leaking oil and wouldn't start. I watched him run and bump start a machine that wouldn't start. It did when he bump started it. No help no one pushing him. I saw Jay a second time,same location. This time on a jet engine bike! Ran on jet fuel and built in France people asked,how far can you go it? Jay says, depends of how fast you go! Jay is the real deal. No back up crew. No cameras, that man rides and lives the Motörhead dream. He's the real deal!

Beautiful bike! The 900 air cooled Ducs are my favorites. Torque, sound, light weight. Sweet in the 3500-5500 rpm range, I used to ride mine on NH backroads, so nice to just use the torque for acceleration and braking, relaxed and quick enough.

Ah yes.Sports Motor Cycles Ltd. Kensal House, Liverpool Road, Manchester, 3. I spent many a happy hour drooling over the bikes. I bought my Laverda Alpino 500 S there in 1978. (I still have all my service receipts on original stationary if you're interested Jay, but I don't suppose you read the comments, or ARE interested. lol) Went to watch Mike at the TT the next year. Loved the Ducati. Love your channel.

Back in 1977 when Cycle magazine tested the Ducati 750SS, they found an Italian fly on the tank stuck under the painting most probably caught during the spraying process. May be the fly in the fuel level stripe on this bike is a tribute to that :)

Jesus, that exhaust note! Such a beautiful bike. I've been rewatching old JLG videos, and I have to say, it's such an awesome channel. The variety of bikes and cars, new and vintage, low-buck and high end, stock, custom, racing, factory concepts, etc. And (not trying to sound like a suck-up, but...) I'm constantly impressed by how well Jay knows the technical aspects and history of the vehicles, his obvious, authentic passion, and his generosity in sharing his insane collection with the rest of us, and his genuine, down to earth approach Personally, I love the vintage cars and bikes, and pretty much anything custom, but I;m pretty sure I've watched every video on the channel at least once by now, and loved them all.The passion for design and engineering, an the knowledge of history that Jay brings makes them all fascinating. Great episode. Jay's enthusiasm for bikes as well, is something I've always enjoyed and feel sets him apart. I still remember when a guest on the Tonight show was telling hi how a bike she was doing a shoot on or, something, fell over and got damaged. If I remember right, Jay said, "What? You didn't throw yourself under it? C'mon, flesh can be repaired." I knew then there was a guy of a like mind.

I am not one to enjoy the bike episodes, but when I saw the title I had to watch it. I love the sound of a ducati, any age including the bb's in a glass jar. For whatever reason ducati makes the proper sound for a bike. Enjoyed every second of it. Thank you Jay for sharing with us, you are right. Building an engine from scratch is equivalent to a guy giving birth. Sometimes the gestation of said baby takes years too and will make a guy queasy when he thinks about said engine. :)

I really enjoy the motorcycle episodes, Jay talks to the camera like a buddy showing you cool toys in his garage. Very engaging. One thing though, at the first when Jay is talking about the bevel drive, he confuses bevel cam drive with the advantages of a Desmo valve actuation. Not that I could do any better. The videos are interesting, diverse and gets a normal schmuck to dreaming about cool vehicles.

Thanks for your comment. I was set to wondering what he was talking about when he described the bevel drive and then got on to valve float, which as you infer was solved by the desmodromic head. It directly pushed and pulled and valves to open and close.

Lorne Spry yes indeed, there are 2 cam lobes, one which opens it, and the other follows up to close to eliminate the valve bounce, a system that Ducati still use, Recently Claudio Domenicali the CEO was asked why they still use it as now days with improved designs and materials there are other solutions, he answered , yes that’s true but the desmodromic system is what we know best and it works! It does increase the maintenance cost though but thankfully on my Multistrada the Desmo service is only required every 30k Kim’s, just done the first one

The reason for the window on the rear cyl was a racing tool these engines use monograde oils and take longer to warm up , so when you start the bike the window fills up with oil once it reaches working temperature the oil drains away , now you can go racing !

I'm so thrilled to discover these last several video's how much Jay is a huge motorcycle rider/enthusiast! It's not actually the bevel gear drive that does the desmodronic valve control it just drives it. Modern Desmos have belt drives. Thanks for showing the Vee Two Ducati a masterpiece!

TRUTH SEEKER indeed... it is the desmo system that was first used by Mercedes and then used by ducati... the latest desmo's are chain drive, i believe. but the bevel drive is the most estaticaly pleasing timing system to me.

Dave Verdonschot The Desmo part is the two rocker arms and two cams for each valve one set for opening and one for opening the valve removing the need for a spring. Whether it is driven by a Bevel gear, chain or belt drive makes no difference...although i like Bevel gear the best, I had a 900ss years ago and miss it a lot. The sound from those Conti silencers is great.

TRUTH SEEKER According to Jim Woods, who was the Ducats and Guzzi dealer in the late 70's to mid 80s, it was a factory screw-up. Curiously I never had problem one with the electrics, and it always fired on second kick, but the handling was so odd I didn't keep it for long. Wish I HAD bought the 750SS an acquaintance of mine offered me, though, including original paint on frame and all the fibreglass. :-(

I like the straight cut gear sound, it's like replacing your cars timing chain with a gear drive, obviously eliminates chain stretch but that sound it makes is REALLY why you do that !

Jay - as always, great video. Like others, am real appreciative of your willingness to give your time up to share all of these wondrous vehicles from and at your shop. Great production values too. One point of discussion: you highlighted the bevel gear aspect of the valve gear train, which is definitely eye candy, but the real aspect of the gear train meant to deal with the valve spring metallurgy weaknesses of the time was the desmodromic technology. As you are no doubt aware, this involves mechanical valve closing via an additional set of cam followers. Slip of the tongue or intentional so as not to confuse the non cognoscenti with too much info? Again, thanks for the numerous awesome videos.

What a great tounge in cheek touch I well remember the original road test 750SS where the clear section on the tank had a genuine Italian Fly in the gelcoat, This one I note has a genuine Aussie Redback Spider in the gelcoat on the left hand side up high on the clear fuel strip.

Paul Judd I was good friends with a guy who owned a small motorcycle shop with his brother in Minnesota. Every spring they would get a shipment of new Ducatis in from Italy, not many, but I fell in love with the sound of the engine and the overall look of the bikes. One of the most beautiful motorcycles ever built.

I owned a Ducati 900 Darmah. What a fun bike to ride on the highway. Like a train on rails. Not very good on sharp twisting roads. Later had the engine updated with racing cams and pistons. Memories

I have a modern BMW sportbike and it's a wonderful bike. It's just about perfect in every way, but that Vee Two is just about the sexiest bike I have ever seen or heard. It speaks to my soul in a language that my BMW just doesn't know. If I could afford one, I'd order one in a second!

Top notch and beautiful. One criticism of the original Ducati bevel drives at the time was, allegedly, that they spent more time disassembled on your garage floor than on the road. Would have liked to hear how this modern manufactured engine compares.

Not that horrible. I rode mine for 20 years until it was destroyed in a fire. A very solid and reliable engine (after the valve guides were replaced with better ones). Now the electrical system, that was another story.
