Dr. Nanako knows when to give up before he makes a big mistake that will hurt his career’s legacy. In other words: Dr Nanako was so good that the other doctors wanted his help in their own cases. However he said he will only help overlooking and not joining in on the surgery as he almost made a mistake 15 minutes ago. Studies have shown that with proper diet and exercise, even the elderly can perform at a high cognitive level, on into their 60's and mid 70's.

@@curiouslymavismade At what age one's cognitive level declines below a certain level varies from one individual to another, no matter how healthy one is. Studies come up with statistics which, while meaningful, don't tell the entire story for each individual. Maybe this surgeon was too hard on himself, or maybe he knew himself well enough to know when to move from surgeon to some other branch of medicine.
