Just imagine the example he is setting for the three surgeons. They will always hold him in highest respect and will always look up to him and try to match the ethical bar he set.

You know I didn’t give this show that much credit but this scene was pretty realistic in the sense that once you start downplaying your mistakes you only get worse from there and you have to be hard on yourself to ensure you don’t make any mistakes.

Dr. Nanako knows when to give up before he makes a big mistake that will hurt his career’s legacy. In other words: Dr Nanako was so good that the other doctors wanted his help in their own cases. However he said he will only help overlooking and not joining in on the surgery as he almost made a mistake 15 minutes ago. And almost making a mistake is enough to make him decide to quit now before something wrong happens.

Nakano was his mentor, but Andrews also thought that Shaun was acting irrationally and out of grief because of Lea's miscarriage in the previous episode. He wasn't wrong that Shaun wasn't truly ready to come back to work yet.

@@SJYNYC It's negative and self deprivating people like you that will have people on that track. If you feel like you are unable to perform based on old age, get a medical review first. @@curiouslymavismade At what age one's cognitive level declines below a certain level varies from one individual to another, no matter how healthy one is. Studies come up with statistics which, while meaningful, don't tell the entire story for each individual. Maybe this surgeon was too hard on himself, or maybe he knew himself well enough to know when to move from surgeon to some other branch of medicine.
