The Big Lie: The Cancer Bride

The New York woman who faked a cancer diagnosis and scored thousands of dollars in wedding donations now says she didn't act alone.
In her first broadcast interview, Jessica Vega told "20/20″ co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas that a friend forged letters from doctors about her supposed cancer treatments and that Vega signed them.
Vega would not reveal the friend's identity, but said that person was no longer in her social circle.
"I'm not a snitch," she said, but later added, "I don't need that person in my life anymore. "
Vega, 25, was living in Montgomery, N.Y. when she told her then-boyfriend, Michael O'Connell, that she was battling a rare form of leukemia and had six months to live. Word spread and soon Vega's story was featured in a local newspaper. Friends and those sympathetic to Vega's story came forward with donations of more than $13,000 to pay for the couple's wedding and honeymoon.

Our town held a benefit for us to help with hospital bills and ppl gave of their hard earned money to help us-who they didn't even know. 2 yrs chemo. Radical surgery. Surgeries for complications. Almost died. I’m still here. I wish I looked as good as this woman. My hairs didn’t fill in neither did my eyebrows, ongoing weight issues, the c word sure ain’t rom antic. But my friends family husband stood by me. And when you have cared for a souse with cancer...my husband passed years ago, way too young, well, you really know what it means to covenant unto death. I would not wish the c word on my worst enemy. Not even #45. To me, this is kind of hard to grasp...the whys...but I am glad she has a marriage and love and doing the hard work of restoration. I hope she will volunteer to help people dealing with the c word. It’s funny, I never even thought about a funding page, even tho times have been hard, although I’ve seen it done. This all baffling.

I kept getting diagnosed with anxiety and needing to see a therapist and learn how to “breath”. Women aren’t taken as serious with anything when it comes to drs as men. Sad but true. I prayed he'd tell me to stay home (we were eloping) but instead he told me it was likely just wedding nerves & to take a bunch of gravol & immodium. My wedding video shows me looking like a dumpster fire & I'm eyeballing the stairway behind the JP trying to muster up the courage to run up them. I didn't though. We went back to our hotel to get ready for a concert we had tickets to & I still just felt like shit. I woulda killed for a Xanax. I finally told him I couldn't muster enough to go so instead of holding my hair all night, he went without me. I didn't see him for 4 days & had to make my way home by myself. Needless to say we split after 11 days. Morale of this story & your....TRUST YOUR GUT!!!! 😕

I think this woman should be forced to visit a cancer ward to see what people actually have to go through. I battled breast cancer in 2014. I went through 16 rounds of chemo, surgery 33 radiation treatments and one year of Herceptin .. Now I suffer from heart failure from all the treatment. They had to implant a cardioverter defibrillator . Never once did I ask for help. This woman makes me sick. She is not sorry for what she did, She is just sorry she got caught.

This is absolutely disgusting!!! I saw my dad suffer for 4 yrs and have multiple stokes due to his cancer diagnosis. We lost him at age of 55 on June 7, 2016. Just the word cancer makes me sick to my stomach and brings back so many bad memories of my dad clinging onto life 😢....Yet, there are crazy people out there that take it as a joke and are lucky enough to be healthy. My own dad passed not long after yours-- October 13, 2016. He was 64 and had been through dozens of surgeries and treatments for brain tumors over the last 19 years. He refused to let anything slow him down or ever feel sorry for himself during that time, which is what made seeing him decline so quickly in his last few days the hardest to deal with.. My husband is in stage four melanoma with multiple brain tumors and two on his spine and one large tumor on his pancreas. He's been through countless surgeries, over 40 radiation therapy sessions, 15 and counting Keytruda infusions and countless other procedures. He was unable to go to the doctor alone every single time. He went alone a few times, but he mostly needs someone to be with him. We have two young children. I had to quit work to take care of him and live off of his disability income. We have been through hell and back and again. I'm his full time caregiver while also taking care of my children and their emotional health. We have gone through so much and continue to go through a lot of pain and worry. This woman makes me disgusted. I don't care if she was miserable because she's a liar. I don't wish cancer on anyone, but I would love for her to know the fear of being diagnosed with terminal cancer. She's heartless. She's full of nasty excuses. I am sick. She's upset about being away from her children for a little while. My husband is upset that his children will be without him for the rest of their lives. She's not interested in correcting her so called mistakes. A mistake is something you do with out knowledge of a wrong. She lied; she made no mistakes. She meant to do this. She has no remorse.

CCknows thank you for your kind words. We did set up a gofundme account for his brain surgery a few years ago. I felt bad about asking people to donate their hard earned money to us. I was surprised by the amount of support we received. We are over $300,000 in debt. I had to quit my job to take care of him. We live on his disability benefits alone. Some people give us grief over receiving his SSI while he's young. It's the same as what everyone receives upon retirement as long as they worked and paid into the system. He's not going to make it that far so he's receiving it now. Besides, he's unable to work in his condition. I don't know why some take issue with that. We don't seek special treatment. Every week we see hundreds of patients at the clinic. Some are much worse than my husband. I am thankful for the quality of the time we get to spend with him. My daughters are young. I feel very sorry for them. I know what it's like to lose one's father at a young age. People need to take care of their neighbors. My church doesn't even help us with things like transportation to and from his appointments or help with my girls. Society has become so greedy. Perhaps it because of scum like this woman who have jaded them. I don't know. I just know it's not like it used to be. People used to reach out to those in need. It's all very sad. Just do the best you can to all you can in any way you can. That's my motto.
