I rescued a retired sled dog that was seized and beaten. These dogs came from Whistler, BC, and there were many dogs that were seized. I am disgusted by this, though I know it is like any other dog owner. He’s not the sport, but it is the owner.

Sad to say this is often quite true in places like where the Iditarod happens. It isn't always the case but it does happen. I'm glad that dryland sled dog racing hasn't got to a point where money is involved because that it was, that would be the point where the animal abuse kicks in. However, The dogs are happy doing this... they live for it! Well, as long as they aren't pushed to the limits

I respect your comment but feel that animals should never have been bred in the first place. Since the establishment of civilization, animals have been grossly mistreated at the hand of humans and it shocks me that we haven’t evolved much since then. The comment may be old but nothing has changed in 5 years. I guess I feel so strongly about the welfare of animals that I cannot accept the use of animals for our benefit. And yes, I’m a hypocrite myself. I have pets and I eat meat sometimes and use animal products. And I hate myself for it sometimes. It’s a struggle that I live with everyday.

One guy had been in that one room for about two months and when I asked he just laughed.. Everyone when I was in there was there for drugs. Half of all arrests are drugs related and about half of those are for marijuana TO THIS DAY. We need to decriminalize all drugs. End the war on drugs. I wouldn't put my worst enemy in there. But we lock people up willy nilly. Thats a huge part of the problem in this country. We are treating mental health and socioeconomic problems as criminal issues. A weekend in jail is an expensive stay, that was 3 years ago and Im still feeling it. Two $400 dollar fines and my truck impounded. $1100 dollars total and three days in jail all for a joint. To all the people making comments about how these dogs are "abused" or being "mistreated". I own two adult huskies, one male, one female. The female is 55 pounds and the male is 65 pounds- he may be a small percent wolf. Both are pure white, the sweetest most gentlest dogs you could be around- until you get them on a leash and harness. Then its all out the window. Many people watch these videos and make quick judgement, but don't understand the power of these animals. I'm an average adult male- 6', 175 lbs on a good day, just one of these dogs will pull on that leash for hours, and especially in the snow I have to fight to keep from being pulled forward - thats just ONE dog. I don't ever walk both dogs by myself single-handedly. I have on occasion been forced to walk both of them on the leash and let me tell you- its freaking scary how strong just two of these dogs are. I've trained them pretty well, but even still if they get a millisecond inkling that were about to walk or go for a run all bets are off. Just two of these dogs could drag and pull me with some effort- in fact many people do whats referred to as "skiijoring" aka skis + 2-3 sled dogs. NOW, I want you to imagine the power of 8-15 of these dogs. That sled and one guy weighs jack to them

You think these dogs living on chains is cruel, what's the difference between that and being in a house for 22+ hours per day with nothing to do? You wake up in the morning, feed them, go to work, come home, take them on a 20 minute walk (if that), ignore them while you watch tv or get the kids to do homework or whatever, feed them, then go to bed and do it all over again in the morning. And I bet during all that, your dog stays pretty much in 1 room in 1 spot. If you chained them there they wouldn't even know the difference. You really think your dogs are happy? @@lynnlebahn3702 If you read, historically, first nations people used sled dogs for more than just transportation. And even when they did, they weren't covering such vast distances. Tethering dogs is a modern idea. The material science alone tells you that. Steel chains produced at a rate cheap enough to use to keep a dog tied up all of the time is a product of the industrial revolution. This is what happens when European settlers took native technology to its extreme. Inuits made everything out of driftwood, bone, stone, or leather. Good luck tethering a team of hungry dogs through the night with that. Inuit dog teams seem to have been traditionally between 2-6 dogs and they didn't often travel more than 50 miles or so for fishing and inter village trading. And that would have been a multi day journey. Probably involving alot of walking yourself INFRONT of your dog team to guide them when there is no trail. Really slow going stuff. My main point being is that these dogs served other purposes historically. Being tethered would hinder that. A pack of dogs that bark at and chase polar bears away is useful AF. Sled dogs these days in the arctic are tethered and its not uncommon to hear of dogs getting eaten by bears haha no joke. I mean it just makes sense. Its a different world up there though. No comment. Im just saying it DOES happen even these days! Its NEVER been easy to be a sled dog even with out this racing BS. I think we need to put a stop to the racing. I have witnessed a ton of abuse first hand. We should shift to a more enrichment focused model instead of a performance driven one. Banning racing is the easiest way to do that without telling people how they should and shouldn't be keeping their dogs. These big crazy kennels, with hundreds of tethered dogs would fall out of fashion on their own. Theres not alot of reason for it outside of racing. Who in their right mind would own this many dogs? Ive seen some of the "greatest" kennels in the world and I still see loads of holes and flaws with the whole ordeal. Racing allows this behavior to be normal. Even praised.

Pathetic coward....how is this life or the life of a iditarod dog not cruel? Thousands of dogs and pups killed bc they didn't make it. Dying of aspiration while training, killed once they're of no more use or not fast enough. You support death and violence for these animals. I hope for nothing but cruelty to be inflicted onto you.

the only right word for this kind of "sport" is DOG CRUELTY! One only has to watch the videos of this place where they are all chained.

My family and I are mushers. And we love our dogs! If one of our dogs is sick or hurt we make sure they recover and get rest. Our dog's arent chained all day long. I agree there are some bad kennels but ours isn't one of those ones. You can't just watch one video and decide that it's bad. You have to visit kennels like ours. There definitely are bad kennels out there, but there are definitely good kennels out there like ours. We treat our dogs with love and kindness. I bake my dogs all sorts of goodies and they love it! :)

Have an Alaskan Malamute here, he LOVES running and pulling you on the bike and stuff, i did not encourage him to do this at all! Its in his nature, he is made for it! Yeah sure the extreme the iditarod dogs are pushed into is cruel, but don't say they don't love racing.. cause then u have never owned a healthy sled dog

Theres more to it than that. They are chain crazy and neurotic. There is an entire world of mushing outside of racing and thats where you will find the better standard of care. People who care about the dogs don't care if they win or not. Once you start TRYING to win any sort of animal race, it becomes cruel. Riding horses isn;t cruel, but racing them is.

@@caden8329 no you are describing TWO bad things. Racing is excessive. And so is locking an animal up all the time. We don't have to live in extremes. And the fact of the matter is the worse level of care in sled dogs is being perpetuated by RACERS.

Damn I used to be so interested in the Iditurod but it makes complete sense as to how it's just a business exploiting those poor dogs and those people saying it's okay for the dogs to still be chained up for 23 hrs are fucking stupid why not get a big amount of land that they can always run around in that's so depressing just getting 1 hr of running around dogs should always be able to do that whenever they want smh? OR if that's too many dogs to have running around im sure you can find loving homes for them yall just selfish and greedy..

haha you don't know the half of it. Ive worked in sled dog racing the past few years. Its REALLY REALLY BAD. The worst stories will never see the light of day. Like simple accidents killing entire teams of dogs. Culling puppies in a gas chamber. Stuff like that. The 5 winners of "pedigree Stagestop" last year were all women. yay how progressive. (women have an edge because they are smaller and lighter) From what I understand, one of them doesn't even own here own team. Yea, people lease dog teams to race. And I know one has accidentally killed her entire team before, oops! She thought about getting out of the sport but her fellow mushers furnished her with a new team! Yay friendship! Killed 20 dogs by overheating them in your dog box? No worries! We got you! Accidents happen! Scrape those dead useless bastards out of there! We've got plenty of dogs! You'll be winning races again in no time! (Your not gonna hear that story on the news, your welcome) These aren't bad people. I don't want to attack anyone personally. But this sport is messed way the hell up. Something is out of whack. I really don't think people should be allowed to do this competitively. These stories I've told you are fairly mundane in the grand scheme of it. Ive got loads more.

Not all dog sledders are cruel. A lot of dogs do enjoy it. But some are bad people only in it for money and not the health of their animals. Just because it's tradition doesn't make it okay. I certainly do not think dog sledding as a whole should be banned, but the bad people involved need to be exposed.
