@bridgetfitzgerald5393 : I came into sober recovery on December 23, 2978 in my 20's. I come from a family of alcoholics and there is a genetic component to addiction. I do not blame anyone -- my drinking got me into every scrape I had and alcohol always was in the mix. If you are struggling -- there is hope and yes -- you will have a far better life and one that is beyond anything you could have imagined. It is your decision and yours alone to seek help for addiction -- if you want help. Blessings! And for @Karentemple6306: Keep on keeping on....a day at a time with gratitude !

I had a massive crush on Chandler and I noticed him getting sick and wondered for a while what it could be until it made public news that he was battling addiction. My God , the bowel perforation 😳 As a nurse I know how close he came to the other side. Wow. I still care about the cast and Google them occasionally as it is reminiscent of my youth and working in the city. I wish nothing but the best for him. Grateful that he shares about his depression and anxiety that drove him to self medicate and abuse drugs and alcohol. I hope Matthew can fully understand how his candidness in addressing his addiction will inevitably lead to others being able to have honest conversations with themselves and the ones they love, and ultimately result in many seeking help. Especially with respect to opiate addiction. It's no secret that opiate addiction has become a global issue that should no longer be ignored, but unfortunately it still is. Of any addiction, I think opiate addiction is the most pernicious, as it generally comes from a place of trust, we are far more susceptible to succumb to something given to us in good faith, but the warnings that accompany opiate prescription are either woefully under exaggerated or absent entirely. When someone like Matthew comes forward with their story, it helps to open up that conversation, while the fact Perry is such a well known, successfully and broadly appreciated talent, his message can be seen from a more human perspective and shine a light on the reality of such addictions, with no one being beyond the pull of these medications.

The problem with addiction is that it's always looking over your shoulder waiting for the opportunity to pull you back in. I've seen and heard of so many who had 1, 2, 10, 20 years relapse and die from an overdose. Sad but true. True recovery means that you go to meetings daily, get a sponsor and stay in touch, develop a true support system of people that not only care for you, also hold you accountable daily. Be completely honest with others and especially yourself.

I absolutely adore his insights about feeling insecure in relationships. Men are absolutely conditioned these days to be insecure about ourselves. And in dating it's especially difficult to feel at peace with yourself, especially when you're with someone who you're genuinely physically (and emotionally) attracted to. I did this dance with my wife for months before I finally let go and allowed myself to be vulnerable with her. It coincided with the death of one of my best friends, so she had to be my emotional support during a very hard time for me. To this day (16 years later), I love her for that. Fellas, even celebrities like Matthew Perry get scared of interesting, beautiful women. Embrace your fear. Seek out someone you really, really want.

Strange how different minds work, I was an alchoholic for twenty years, then I decided to talk myself out of alcholism by picturing myself in the future as either dead from alcohol or causing damage to my friends and family, I did this evereyday for a month. then walking down some stairs in a building one day I pictured myself leaving that building and the alcohol behind, it worked no AA just left it behind, and now 15 years on I can walk into a bar with my wife order her a drink, and the joke always is don't worry about me I'll stand in the corner and kick the cat, but seriously I just gave up the booze that day and the rest of my happy life is history, I just hope Mathew can see the end of that shiny tunnel that leads to a happy life as well, good luck mate from a sober Aussie.

My dearest friend relapsed into his heroin addiction after we'd known each other for just 6 months. It was so devastating and yeah, I recognise Matthew's point that anything that happens, good or bad can lead to a relapse. It must be awful to live on that knife edge. The problemt I experienced was, that I got the blame for any 'loss of balance' and that's so distructive for friendships with addicts. I miss him. I hope he survives to find the solution to living a drug-free life without any more relapses, but...I have lost that friendship. 😢

When you realized that you’re a spiritual being, you’re more than your physical body and when you have had enough of a certain experience, e.g alcohol / drug, then you can let it go because your mind is much more powerful than your physical body! I started drinking when I was 18, I remember there were times when I was drunk 3 times a week with all the vomiting memory and bruises on my body which I didn’t even recall. One day I learnt that how the evil spirits can take over your soul when you’re drunk, I no longer let that happen. Overnight decision to stop drinking, and it’s been 2 year haven’t had any.
