The Dept. of Education funds way more than people realize. FAFSA, IEP grants and Pell grants could become essentially non extinct not to mention title 1 funding which is the life blood of many poor and rural schools. So when college stays unaffordable, when special needs kids are not giving proper education, or when your school gets closed and consolidated due to lack of funding. Don't complain you wanted this

our school systems need to look at how they do things in Denmark, Switzerland, Holland, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, they seem to have higher academic performances, lower drop out rates, better behavior / less delinquency in their students. we seriously need to look at the models of how they teach, how they interact, encourage students, how they deal with punishment and discipline. we need to revamp our systems and i feel like they are some good models to look at in planning and setting up ours.

24 years ago for me! Class of 2000! I thank God everyday that I am done with school! I worked in the private sectors for most of my work career, but transitioned to Education last year and I can tell you that major changes are needed pronto and I do believe the Trump administration is going to implement some very useful new policies and procedures in public schools and the education system at large. There are extremely innovative and brilliant people on his team. Trump is also willing to tweak concepts and plans after talking to people he respects who has feedback, and I believe they will truly reverse the evil changes in the Education system that have led us to our present day situation.

Because the parents are a disgrace. Parents expect teachers to not only educate their kids, but teach them basic manners and respect too. A lot of a teacher's time in the classroom is spent trying to control disruptive and disrespectful kids who are interfering with the learning of other kids who are actually there to learn. When teachers contact parents about bad behavior many parents try to find a way to blame the teacher instead of addressing the behavior issues with the kids. Parents don't realize that there is need for collaboration with teachers, and a need for them to be actively involved in their child's education. These middle school kids are sexting, coming to school out of dress code, swearing in front of teachers, not following instructions in the classroom, fighting, constantly on their phones and not paying attention during instruction, many are not in school to learn. If your child is failing and you are just sitting there blaming teachers and schools then you are the problem.

Actually it is a major factor in what is wrong with schools. The Federal Government basically took over the curriculum of the schools in one year. We now have the Government teaching our kids, and you can see how well that is working. Higher education in the US is a joke. I'd know better than most, after teaching at the University level for 20 years. Only 1/3 of University students should even be enrolled at institutions of higher learning. 1/3 don't have the mental capacity to do college level course work. The other 1/3 just don't care. The result is rampant grade inflation and the reduction of academic standards. Universities priorities are not maintaining academic standards/rigor--it's maintaining funding. My university, was actually considering censuring Professors that failed too many students.

School choice actually means the schools get to choose. They can discriminate and refuse to enroll any child or kick out a child. Vouchers to private schools are often not enough too pay the tuition, and are usually just a discount for wealthy people who could already afford the tuition.

When I was visiting the Soviet Union in 1987 every child attened a red camp indoctrination in the summer. Your IQ was constantly tested. If you tested higher I you were taken from your parents and put in special schools. If you were gifted at anything that is where you were sent. Lower I Q, there were massive farms with apt type buildings that everyone lived in. Not apts like in rhe US. Rooms to live in. Dorm like bathrooms on each floor and a general kitchen area for 1 or more floors. No Baptist church, no evangelical church, no Catholic church...to go to on Sundays. The rare Russian Orthodox church that mistly old WW2 widows attended. The Russian people hated the Nazis with a passion. Rare freedom to travel. Stores were basicly bare. Im 18 and graduated from a public hs last summer so i think i have the most accurate view on whats wrong with public school. Public school should not be a place for adults to push their beliefs onto children and thats exactly what it was in my district. The education system is a joke, it isnt set up to make kids want to learn or want to be smart and if my parents didnt push me to try in school i wouldnt be at the point im at in a very respected university. Every single teacher i had that discussed politics was Liberal and you can literally graduate by showing up and giving minimal effort.
