The 9/11 bill got passed. Jon Stewart’s efforts and brilliant speech paid off
@boppob13434 жыл бұрын
@Ben Honestly, it's not the House delaying it. It had passed through the house already, months before hand(albeit, the first vote for it wasn't even bipartisan, 2nd was purely bc Jon called them out). Mitch McConnell purposefully fucks over bills that pass in the house to the tune of about 300 bills in the last 365 days alone. Hell, he tried to drag his feet AGAIN. EVEN AFTER THIS SPEECH! Its hilarious to watch an interview he did for Fox News(lol... yuck), they gave him super softball followups. He tried to say that, "well we have a lot of work to do and we'd never let it expire anyways. we'll pass it like we always would, hes just yelling over nothing. we'll put it in a bill in the next few weeks and it'll be passed" But even the Fox News anchors were like, "I think they just figure you should just pass it in its own bill, just real quick. yall can do that right?". And Mitch was like, "oh. uh. i mean. yeah i guess we can, but... *stall stall stall*". He's such an evil person. He doesn't pass bills that the GOP are specifically pushing themselves. Those are the most likely to be passed obv because of his party alignments, but he even blocks most of those! If he wasn't a key person in writing the bill, or if they don't let him edit them to the level he wants to personally, he wont let it go to vote in the Senate. He does it just for the power. It's disgusting. You should look up how many bills have passed in the House over the past 8 years that Mitch McConnell didn't even let a vote be done for. Several of those include this previous iterations of 9/11 First Responders Healthcare bill. So many people in need, went without what they needed, worked, and campaigned for with committees. Just for McConnell to not even read them, and then blow them off.

Jon Stewart changed my life during the 9/11 crisis. I had taken 2 weeks vacation as soon as I saw this to go to NYC, thinking that my fire fighting and first aid training from my Navy days might be useful. Once I got there, it was not easy getting through the lines, but I finally found a cop who let me in to try to help. My skills were not needed by then - there were no hordes of wounded needing first aid, and NYFD had the fires under control. So I spent most of my time schlepping food and drinks to the real heroes digging through the rubble for remains, or when lucky a rare survivor. One day, doing that, I saw something I still don't talk about - don't like to think about. And for the first time, I went outside the lines, got some beer and a hotel room and started getting drunk. Later, I turned on the TV to try to distract myself, and I saw that the Daily Show was going to be on in about 5 minutes. I had never seen it but had heard great things about it, and I thought some laughs might do me good. There were no laughs in the 1st part of the show - just Jon talking about 9/11, and then he said "Any fool can destroy, but to see these people, the first responders, and people from all over the country, literally with BUCKETS, rebuilding - now THAT is amazing." When I left, ground zero, I did not worry about whether I could get back in. I had no intention of ever going back. Jon restored my courage, and my resolve and the next morning I did go back. He lifted me from the depths, and helped me go on at one of the lowest points in my life.

One of the most sobering realities I’ve been struck with, as I’ve consumed copious amounts of news and media around politics over the years, is that the people at the top of the ladder are overwhelmingly, disconnected, dispassionate, Self-serving sociopaths. They did not stand, and they did not clap because they did not care.

Every single word measured. Every single sentence short, and to the point. Every point made hit with devastating accuracy. Every sentiment genuinely felt. No bull, no waffle, no attempt at even handedness. Integrity. Passion, articulation. One of the single greatest speeches I have ever heard. If I was a target of that, I would have folded. They won’t have done of course. They are amoral, careerist scumbags, a comment Jon would not make, but I would.

But the level of disrespect that every single one of the "Empty Chair Congress members" is beyond disgusting. Imagine what kind of a response they would give when their sons and/or daughter would say: "Mommy/Daddy, how could you disrespect our nation's heroes like that? Wasn't the motto of September 11th 'Never Forget?' And you didn't even show??? @jamesrawlins735 Жыл бұрын
Occasionally an event transforms a person. Jon Stewart could have just been another celebrity who just gave lip service to 9/11 - but he became the greatest advocate for those who answered the call that day. Gary Sinise was so affected by playing Lt. Dan in Forest Gump that he became the most well known figure speaking for veterans. Pat Tillman gave up a career in the NFL to enlist and serve as an Army Ranger in the Iraq War (where he was killed by friendly fire). These three serve as role models of what celebrities (and all of us) should aspire to be.

I watched "No Responders Left Behind", a film that came out on September 9, 2021 about the Victim Compensation Fund, and John Feal explains that amazingly, he told Jon to go offscript at the committee hearing and not use his written speech. And u must’ve bought every packet of both flavors (boxes of packs for your bottled water are included) in the juice & soft drink aisle. I can tell by reading your reply a whole year later that you’ve been chugging “00Cheeto’s” regular & hot flavored kool-aid like a college dude at a frat party. That’s the only reasoning behind you calling Jon Stewart whose been working on, advocating for & backing this bill for 10yrs when he was asked by his friend & NYC Firefighter who passed b4 Jon spoke to the sub-committee. It was Rand Paul who did the grandstanding by not even taking the time to meet with Jon by himself or with other first responders who could meet Rand w/out Jon present in a more private setting. Jon allowed the first responders to use his name to help them get their foot in the US Congressional & Senate Doors. Him refusing their offer to meet with them several times has disproven his theory about the fiscal costs. As well as him saying the same thing about a tax break or cut, but ultimately voting for it in the long run. If Agent Orange even signed the bill a few days later, and the vote was 97-2 to approve of it, Rand is the problem! Not the ultimate fiscal costs that will occur if they decide not to wait out another 5yrs like both him and the other guy who voted against it wanted to happen. So keep drinking the kool-aid Miss Mildred. Hopefully it won’t stain your teeth like the way Cheeto dust does to ppls fingers.

@HeyMildred You call this grandstanding. Aren't you lucky you aren't a brave man or woman willing to put your life out there for others. When you think of how good this speech was, there’s the dynamic that jon realized so many of the congress were not there and was able to add that to his point, that they needed to get this passed immediately. I love watching this to just take in how he’s able to see the situation and add it to his main focus

That makes no sense and isn’t logical to say, I agree with the bill. Politics and things like this shouldn’t really mix so don’t bring it up in the first place.

I mean, I’m from across the pond & that resonates with me. Our Conservatives are vile. David Cameron to Theresa May to Boris *obese scarecrow* Johnson to Liz Trauss (for a day or two) to Sunak … They’ve literally created a revolving door of employment at the highest jobs in government, it’s embarrassing. What we do share is Rupert Murdoch’s control over the narrative. Here, he’ll fear-monger, spread lies using The Sun, The Daily Mail & some TV shows I can’t remember because they were instant flops. In the US, he has Fox News (& probably supports organisations like QAnon). You’ve also got oil companies price gauging &, yet again, Republicans / Conservatives supporting this. You had Ron DeSanctimonious pushing to loosen gun laws in Florida when residents wanted *STRICTER* gun laws. He does not want to legalise or decriminalise cannabis because *HE* doesn’t like the smell. “Yo, Ron DeDumbDumb, it’s not about you. It’s about the millions that can be helped by cannabis consumption & your constituents / base / following *WANT* this!” Who are these people? Republicans are literally prostitutes for corporations who keep their ignorant audience blind in 1984 fashion …

Gab rielle because it’s purposefully attached to a bill that was understood to be put off, like they do with all of them, to look good and to make others look bad for either voting for or against a bill that would ultimately help or hurt their states, and either make them look good or bad by dragging out the bill that’s attached to purposefully unpassable legislation meant to passive aggressively attack partisan politicians on the other end in true Machiavellian underhanded normalized behavior that happens every day and is business as usual. They purposefully drag out these pork belly or attach it to something that someone wants for their state, but if they vote for it, they also accept the other unpalatable legislation that, if brought to light, will hurt them. They parade this shit in front of the public, especially during election seasons (which, honestly, is the only job a politician focuses on, even week one, how to get re elected).
