There was a news story, titled something along the lines "why mixed families are deciding to raise their children in Finland". I thought the story was going to be comparing costs, social security and schools (Finnish schools are rated among the best in the world), I was shocked that the story was about maternal d*ath instead. The couples in it said they had decided to give birth in Finland because they were afraid to do so in the US.

In America, it’s the opposite reason as to why they’re not taken seriously. Our medical texts still teach that black women have higher pain tolerance and “don’t feel pain” like white do because they have “thicker skin.” It’s BS. But it’s pervasive. Racism. And profit over people.

Im not big on sharing goals ,but as a 22 year old black male who is interested in the female/child connection and health I plan on becoming a certified midwife/obgyn. I love the idea of holistic medicine. The idea that I will be able to provide a safe space for all woman and children to come and allow me to experience the birthing process seems like a joy. One goal I have is to open a practice that will be split in a way. One side will provide the opportunity for woman to come and enjoy the space to allow their bodies to birth a child naturally, and the other side (ob) will be available to give them the option to lean towards more of a modernized birthing technique. I feel as if this will allow me to provide trust so that my patients will feel as comfortable as possible during such a fragile process. I still have a long way to go. A lot of research, question asking and observation will be needed to pull this plan off. But I believe I can really be apart of a solild and positive movement in the black community when it comes to providing a safe environment surrounded by trust and love for not only the birthing process ,but the respect for the field as well. One more goal I have in regards to this one is wanting to base my practice in a predominantly black community. There a plenty of places I havent been but Atlanta is definitely a top spot for me. Keep your eyes and ears open. Youve got one otw…👏🏾💯

This is why women are obsessed with natural medicine and chronically reading web md, because doctors don’t do their damn job. After years of being told I had migraines I left the us and went to another doctor turns out I have a cyst and it’s a miracle I haven’t just dropped dead because it’s grown very large. I wish I could bitch slap every us doc Who told me it was just migraines. My current doctor is confused why no doctor never had me get an mri. Also I’m white so I can only imagine what it’s like for everyone else.

It’s more than that. I worked in L&D trust me when I tell you racism in medicine comes from the top down. It’s total system failure. I had to fight and argue with my providers to take my symptoms seriously, treat it with a different medication and I’m a nurse and worked in Labor and Delivery! The sad part is they forgot to mention in their statistics that black women of ANY socioeconomic background or education level is 4 times more likely to die during pregnancy, birth, or postpartum than white women. Serena Williams had to fight for a CT scan when she was short of breath and she knew she had a PE but they kept ignoring her and she’s rich!

Find yourself a good OB/GYN now and plan on which hospital system to go to when its time to deliver your baby. And if you don't agree with anything the doctor says or does, you have the right to request another doctor to care for you. Please stand up for yourself and speak up if you even suspect something is not right. It's your body and only YOU know it better than anyone else. Additionally, the doctors and nurses have to listen to your family members and visitors so please encourage them to speak up on your behalf. YOU are the patient and by federal and state law, patients have certain rights. I'd suggest familiarizing yourself with them. I hope you have a happy, healthy baby.

We had a day and night emergency number for the midwifes that could be here in 10 minutes to check anything we didn't trust. They take blood pressure ect and will call ahead to the hospital if they think you should go in so that a doctor will look at you right away. They will call an ambulance if they think driving is to dangerous.

Sad....even a simple blood test..could have been done showing high D_Dimer...Shortness of breath and C-section...is a reason for following up on blood clot. ABC ...airway, breathing, circulation is the number one way to prioritize. Breathing issues are critical....to ALL pregnant women....watch for your urine output.....less than 30 ml per hour is a telling sign. If preeclampsia is a issue....know that HELP syndrome is a factor as well. Best thing to do if you are in this position and having trouble breathing....KNOW and LOCATE the BUTTON in the room that is for to CALL a CODE....pull it. Can't breathe... You call a CODE...

Bless this man opening up a birth center in NY. Unfortunately, CPMs are treated like CRIMINALS in NY. And nothing is being done to change that. It’s still the same old same old, the history of our Grand Midwives under the thumb of the medical industrial complex. They are STILL holding midwives down and creating and maintaining barriers for access to midwifery training, workforce equity, etc. It’s gross. And people are dying. There’s a supposed initiative that’s happening… but what I see is backpedaling and mistreatment of the midwifery profession here in NJ. Instead of expanding access to midwifery education, and autonomy, they’re actually stripping the rights and privileges slowly but surely. The medical board of examiners oversee licensure of midwives - CNM and CPM. And they’re doing it all wrong.

🙏🏽♥️🕊️ Wow, after listening to this and listening to several other similar stories about maternal mortality it’s amazing to hear that a number of these black women had H.E.L.P. Syndrome. I myself am a black woman, 53 years of age and prior giving birth to my only child in 1993, I acquired H.E.L.P. Syndrome as well. In all of my reading about this syndrome it indicates it’s so rare and is prevalent in Caucasian women. #4Kira4Moms #BlackMaternalDeaths

The women's complaints of serious symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath weren't being taken seriously, but by who? Were they were ignored by ER's, or are we talking about a call to the OB/GYN, primary care doctors, or all the above?? Im just wondering who is ignoring their complaints so we can finally fix this problem. This has been a known statistic in healthcare for decades but what is being done about it? Where's the research and interventions to protect our black pregnant women??
