Harmful to the child's self esteem my ass. You humiliate someone, you have *no* right to think you can't be humiliated back. It's ridiculous to think some people consider that child abuse. That's wonderful parenting. Teaching your child empathy is one of the best things you can do as a parent.

Kudos to the parents on this. Making a kid wear thrift clothing isn't shaming. It's teaching the kid some humility. If you say it's shaming, you're saying that people should be ashamed of having to shop at thrift stores or low end clothing stores.
@psps1180
@psps1180 6 жыл бұрын
Don't forget to drink your Cyanide agreed! First thing my mom did when she caught me picking on another girl was to call my brother and cousins and have them tease me. Then she said, you're upset that people that love you are picking on you. She may not be as lucky to have somebody that loves her. You don't have to be her friend if you don't get along but I expect you to apologize and at least be polite. Well. I thought about it, and I asked. The girl had been mean to me before I picked on her, but I learned that her mom and dad were divorcing and she had been sent to school in Texas and was actually very jealous of all the nice things I had. So I helped her make friends in our class, gave her a few things I wasn't using, and we got along fine. We're not ”best friends” or even that close but I learned that day that hurt people hurt others, and reacting badly just makes them hurt more.

I know I might be hated for this. I hope u understand. But I would never be best friends with my "bully" after what they did to me. Back in the days I was bullied cause I was quiet. Everyone in the classroom was against me. Soooo after a few years later they picked on me for having a broken arm saying "it isn't broken", teachers never did anything. Then of course I started the most evil way. Even to the point I exposed them on their lies. I guess u can say I went too far. I mean it far too late for them to say sorry.

I totally agree with the stepmom's method of correction. It was firm, but full of compassion. I saw another example where a father found out his daughter was bullying another girl. He took the money that he was going to spend shopping with his daughter and spent on the bullied girl with his daughter present. He found out that the girl didn't have a dad in the home, so he reached out to mentor her along with his daughter. Both girls are now friends!

+cosmic infinity That is a COMPLETELY different story. The mother didn't really publicly shame her daughter, unless she posted it on social media or something. She taught her daughter a lesson in humility with the punishment not being too severe. Many parents either go way to far, like the father you speak of, or they do nothing. This mother, I think, had the perfect punishment.

There is a line between abuse and discipline and I believe the mother took the appropriate course of action. She gave her daughter the opportunity to walk in someone else's shoes. It's very clear some people these days do not have the money to buy brand clothes and to be honest, I don't see why thrift shop clothing is bad either... kids these days are too spoiled to understand the struggle that is economy... Besides, this mother prevented her daughter from doing any future bullying, I call that a win in my book.

Intentionally putting your kid through bullying and public shaming - both shown to be potentially traumatic and lowers self-esteem - is not only dangerous but lazy parenting. You need to talk to your kid like a human. If your kid makes fun of someone with a Borden leg will you break their leg? It’s stupid. There was no way that girl could sympathize with her classmate that she bullied until she walked a day in her shoes. Bravo bonus mom and dad (I hate the word step LOL)! I probably would've reverted back to what I knew worked on me and spanked her, and that's only because I don't have that creative process in my brain. The thing is that is relative you know. You gotta know your child, in this case it was great and she learned the lesson. But the same treatment on other child could have gone really bad, a child with social anxiety could have focused way too much on what others say about them and instead of (just?) learning the lesson it could be worsening her/his anxiety and even traumatize the kid. You know, it’s not drama if it’s real and people should respect the differences on people, there’s not a formula for everyone.

It's like...yes, it DOES make them feel "less than." That is the point. This girl thought she was MORE THAN someone else, and "talking to her" (who is, indeed, a CHILD) is NOT as likely to reach the same impact. Children don't have the depth of awareness adults do, or the ability to understand, empathize, or rationalize things they don't understand, and SOME kids bully because they don't actually KNOW what it's like to feel "less than," and would think twice if they actually, truly KNEW how horrible their words make others feel. We don't know EXACTLY what was said, but I'd bet in the 2 days she had to wear them, she eventually heard things that were very similar to the things she was saying. A lot of bullies end up eating their own words later in life, but to so quickly be forced to have them cast unto you...no wonder she's now friends with the girl. And she's at a young enough age where that would have been enough to make her rethink her attitude. Hopefully everyone who watches this story has ignored the "doctor's" warning LOL.

The sad part is that they probably HAD to have someone come on & say that, for the crazy sick parents in the world, who would go overboard and actually humiliate their kids. This was a beautiful teaching moment that was appreciated by all involved. But there are those out there that think that if a little is good, then.... There are some sick twisted people out there shouldn't even have kids. I think the silly expert was meant to put it into perspective for the idiots out there

actually the expert (with a phd) that was on the panel after the report, towards the end of the video, said that it was a very creative way to teach the lesson that needed to be learned and she likes it. The expert mentions how a lot of parents in North America are afraid of the consequences of punishment which means they parent based on emotion instead of by principle(which is what she recommends). She even comments how she like second hand clothes which i think also puts things into perspective; as a lot of people mentioned here she looks cute in those outfits regardless, it's just about how the girl is perceived
@VanSaused

@@achocot Agreed, the lady at the end offering her perspective is agreeable. Edward Hallowell on the other hand just made himself hypocritical by saying he doesn’t support humiliation via wearing “ugly” clothes when he himself said nothing about the bullying and didn’t offer his own advice on how to approach a situation like this.

This kind of humbling experience does not harm a child's self-esteem, if it's done correctly by the parents. What it does harm is a bloated ego. Once upon a time i wad bullied by two people. I had moved to a different place and went to this school, but when i got there i was bullied by these two girls. There was a girl in that class and she is now my best-friend but anyways, I hated school and wanted to go back to my old school badly. A week later the girl came back from her trip, so i play this game called MSP. So in weird off but the girl was a lot like me so we became really good friends. And then the rest of the year was a little easier. So next year one of the bullies was in my class and I was mad. We eventually became friends and now I have two besties. She told me that the main one made her do everything and that she didn’t mean to hurt my feelings, my mom had no idea btw. Anyways after I became besties with them I started to like school. And now, I’m glad that I moved to that school. The end.
