Over the last twelve months, China has launched a wave of trade sanctions against Australia.
Industry after industry has been hit with a range of punishing measures, from massive new taxes to import restrictions.
As a result, many Australian products have effectively been banned from entering China, leaving the businesses that rely on this trade in peril.
But why is China punishing Australia and who is at risk?
From the barley fields of WA’s salt lake country to the lobster trawlers of Hobart, Four Corners reveals the human and financial cost of the ongoing dispute.

When governments and businesses stop making money out of peddling death and destruction will this nonsense stop, but of course it won't. Yes, we should be concerned about China's current political trajectory. China's government is rubbish. It doesn't act in the best interest of its own people or the world. It wants to be a world power, but what does it have to offer? I don't see anything coming out of China that inspires, evokes confidence or optimism. Here we have another totalitarian regime grasping for wealth and power. The only thing close to the heart of China's Communist Party is its own survival at all cost.

Queen Elizabeth techincally still has the power to fire your PM. Australia looks up to the UK and the US as her masters and surrenders her sovereignty over foreign policy to these two countries. Unfortunately Biden is still following the policy of America first (though more subtly) and Australia is only a pawn to be used. I feel really bad for the hardworking Australians, but let's get this straight: the Australian government is to be blamed here. Your government has chosen to fight other's war instead of putting your well being as priority. If they really care about human rights record, they would have never dealt with both US and China (and I'd argue that the US has done worse). It's not about human rights, it's plain politics for the benefits of those on top.

To add, the overall export to China from Australia has increased because of iron ore. So essentially your government is still dealing with China with or without your (ordinary Australians) support. If China imposed tariffs on other countries it would not hurt them as much. I come from a western country, and I am shocked that everyone is so vigorously blaming China for everything while totally ignoring our rotten behavior. Huawei was the easiest one to avoid: they should have allowed Huawei to tender, and just not chosen them (this is precisely what Singapore did). It's called diplomacy. Banning Huawei outright in March 2019 is what started the war. The other easy issue to stay right out of is Hong Kong: for 155 years the British stole Hong Kong from China at gun point. It makes absolutely zero sense to interfere there: the British 100% caused that one, not China. If the Australian government had remained rational and acted diplomatically on these two issues then China would still be friends. If you want to claim the moral high ground, you first need to actually have the moral high ground.

This is a bad argument for defending China's actions. Have you ever heard of "proportional response"? For example, If I said bad things about you and then you shot me in the foot for it and threatened to shoot the other foot unless I apologized then that's not really a proportional response to my actions is it? You would be seen as psychotic. This is the same situation. Sure, I don't think aggressive rhetoric from the PM actually accomplishes anything, but China has wanted to use more aggressive coercion for a while now. Not because Australia's PM said something they didn't like, but because Australia holds completely different governance, economic prospect and values. Although most importantly because those structures align us with the USA, their direct competition. A structure that threatens the CCP's existence. So why I do believe Morrison deserves some blame for his dumb rhetoric. I similarly believe it is ignorant to the understanding of geopolitical prospects to think he is the reason this is happening in entirety. It was coming eventually with or without someone like Morrison.

@@kamikaze1888 Well, China would generally be the cause of f the demonisation of China. You see, China, like many powerful nations, tends to act in certain ways. And of course in the media - both corporate and social- they tend to be denounced for these behaviors. You only have to look at the vitriol directed at the US continually. And boy do they deserve it sometimes! But of these nations it's generally only China that screeches in outrage about it. Rather creepily the CCP seems to feel entitled to the same control internationally as it has domestically and is quite happy to expect other nations to somehow silence their free media to soothe their butt-hurt. Put simply Australia deliberately spoke to the US only last year that it would retain freedom of action. But perhaps that wasn't reported in the state controlled media of China. It wasn't the approved narrative maybe... It's this closed off media, endless one party police state dictatorship machine that makes so many pro-CCP posters make comments that make them seem so out of step with reality. Especially to those who haven't had the 'benefits' of a one party police state education system. The simple fact is that China wanted a voiceless quarry and food bowl and when it became clear they weren't going to get that the tantrums started, the standard Chinese trade coercion routine they've used so many times over. In a way it's probably lucky all media in China is state controlled and stays on message constantly- how else would Chinese people be able to remember who they were offended by or had been insulted by from one week to the next. Given the myriad of trade spats China gets into how else would Chinese people be able to keep up..

39:19 "There seems to be this perception that if the Australian government softens its stance towards China, that we will be perceived as weak". The real reason Australia IS weak is because it keeps bending over for the United States interests against its own people's interests. Any intelligent person realizes that the US empire is dissolving because of its evilness and greed and all the while the Chinese economy is booming and it is physically closer to China than the US. Not softens, but switching to a stance of mutual respect is how relationships are preserved and business should be conducted. What each country does internally is THEIR business and should not be discussed at all, no meddling.

Add "Between a rock and a hard place" As described in Charles Dickens novel "Great Expectations," England shipped its jailed inmates of debtors and criminals to settle Australia, but in Dickens novel, some of these people wanted to return to England for various reasons, specially after these debtors and criminals became very rich and successful developing the lands of Australia. Later, Australia was part of the British Commonwealth. It can be guessed that the Queen of England rather wishes England can regain Hong Kong back, while China believes that England took Hong Kong by unfair force during the Opium War, when the English forced the Chinese to become addicted to the drug opium, and when the Chinese tried to block the opium importation, England sent its naval forces to start the Opium War that ended with England getting Hong Kong. Guess that Australia still feels affiliations toward its old mother country of England, like in Dickens novel "Great Expectations" so that some of its politicians may side with England concerning Hong Kong. This creates the "between a rock and a hard place" issue. Another saying is "One cannot have the cake and eat it too." Another saying is "Seven years of feast are followed by seven years of famine (and drought,) specially if runaway global warming occurs. And, Joseph advised to the king of Egypt to build huge grain storages, and the king placed a tax on the farmers to set aside 20 percent of the harvest during the feast years to fill up the huge grain storages to prepare for the following famine, when the Earth becaome bone dry, and nothing grew. And, in the Book of Revelations, after the white horse appears on the scene with a loud noise (like the iron horse appearing on the scene with a cloud of white steam about a couple of hundred years ago) announcing the beginning of the End Times, the earth will become hot and dry with nothing growing, and all of the grasses are burnt in wild fires.

@@oldman2800 They were reliable for at least the last thirty years until Canberra joined the MAGA wagon and ScumMo fell for the snake oil salesman pitch. They joined the anti China band wagon and wanted to provoke their biggest trading partner. Now the industries suffering need to sleep in the bed Canberra made for them. Never mind being talked into joining another gang called AUKUS and painting a target on OZ by ANY other nuclear power by purchasing nuclear subs from said gang. Yes they won't come with any nuclear missiles but they can easily be integrated into them in the future. Yes spend billions on weapons for imagined enemies. It's also ironic that OZ is now Ally's with the one country that actually did invade it..... How some people forget The not too far past history....

My question is, has Australia seen it is coming since they banned Huawei products in 2015 and kept treating China as a enemy after that? If not, it is just stupid, isn't it?

@@artofthedeal4637 Before Australia turned against China, do you have any evidence of China intent to cause harm to Australia. I don't think you do. Australia can trade with any country it wants, China can do that too. Australia treats China as enemy, China just do what Australia wants to achieve! China is not punisching Australia, China is defending itself!
