I used to love Sihanoukville. I used to take my Cambodian wife there every time we had a holiday. After our last trip, we vowed we'd never go again. It's dirty, expensive and the beaches have been trashed. I feel really sorry for the mom-and-pop local businesses that have seen their incomes evaporate.

One reason the progress of the mentioned HSR project in Thailand has been slow is because the Thai government demanded that most of the construction work has to done by Thai workers with, if possible, domestic materials, which have to be tested from scratch to satisfy the required Chinese standard. The government also demanded technological transfer and aimed to build the second phase (the missing link which would connect to Laos) themselves. Since China already invested billions of dollar in Laos and that railway project would have been a white elephant without the connection to Thailand, the Thai government has some leverage to make such demands. If Thailand wants the project to be done quickly, they can just follow Laos: take a big loan from China and pay China to build it with Chinese workers with imported materials. However, as Thailand is in no rush for HSR since they already have existing railways, that path might not be the best for Thailand and Thai people.

Because YOUR people are less than capable of doing the job in quality and a timely manner, don't even think you are half as capable as them when it comes to construction because they are the best in the world at it. Be humble and accept the help, don't assume you can build anything without their help because even the Chinese a long time back needed the help of the Japanese in key infrastructure projects, so when their workers come, learn from them instead of whining like the americans.

From a geo-political standpoint, Thailand is very wary of outside influences and is fiercely independent, so it is fighting hard to make sure that any foreign investment benefits that nation and people. By contrast, Cambodia is so reliant on China that it is virtually a client state so will pretty much go along with what China wants.

@Alphabets T I'm from China. These sorts of tours used to be more popular but the demand is in decline. Since our economy has just boomed in the past three decades, tourism was relatively new, and both the tourists and the local businesses were taken advantage of by these sorts of tour agencies. Nowadays, mostly only old people still go on these zero-dollar tours and the younger generation are leaning towards planning their own trip and interacting with locals. Compound that with government control, I believe we will see a lot of change in the right direction in the upcoming years.

From the video I see more benefits than harm done from the Chinese investment in Cambodia. Those who reluctant to change to improve of course will be falling behind. If you can keep up than don’t blame others but yourself. Of course blaming others are easier to digest rather than blaming themselves. To those who keeps pointing fingers to other, it’s time to point your own finger to yourself and think how you gonna change to keep up with the pace. Or you can just keep blaming others and don’t change at all. The choice is yours to make and it’s your life. Don’t expect someone will come and help you to succeed. No free lunch in this world Ready or not it gonna happen just a matter of time. Not just help from China, it could be other country from the west and the same thing just gonna happen whether you like it or not.

If the China had invested in it, everything would be built by Chinese companies, including the laborers, it would use all the Chinese. There were people almost openly said Japanese culture/products are more supreme than us and they are doing just fine. Recently the government is trying to improve the relationship with Japan. We admit the conflict between China, Korea, and Japan, it's complicated and there isn't a clear winner in terms of these arguments. As for Japan, I love Japanese culture and their people but I think their right-wing influence still owe us an apology. It's always easy to discredit all of our arguments into brainwash.

To answer the reporters first question to Mr Tan, Sihanoukville was chosen for casino development for at least one major reason and that is that the Malaysian Nagaworld casino has an exclusive casino license in Phnom Penh until 2045. Regarding the infrastructure that the Chinese are developing, the most significant one is an expressway from PP to Sihanoukville, designed, of course, to get gamblers to/from the new casinos quickly and easily until Sihanoukville‘s new airport is operational.

On the one hand the Chinese government wish to go faster with the Belt and Road projects, on the other hand the locals may not benefit from the economic growth. Life is not fair, even in the United States. If you are not well educated, or you are not wealthy, you will be left behind.

First I would like to thank Anthony for accepting this assignment I believe that you were born for this purpose. Your show has helped open my eyes to see the world differently, especially Asia. I was born in Cambodia 1969. The first 10 years of my life I was raised during the most horrific period of Cambodian history. I came to the US as a refugee in 1983. I had the opportunity to revisit Cambodia 10yrs ago and it has changed since, seems like night and day. As I follow your show, I've learned that no matter how advanced each country is, still the poor have no voice. Money talks, that is all the leaders care about. Each leader that's representing each country will one day have to answer to the creator of all things that is the LORD jesus christ himself. Instead of taking care of their citizens and letting their voices be heard, they ignored their citizens. They will be judged one day. But there's hope one day the world will be ruled by one perfect ruler the KING HIMSELF, Jesus.

I was born at a time the Middle East had started to engage China in global trade through the Silk and Road Belt initiated by China as the key to prosperity. The program extends from Central Asia to Europe with the ancient method known as “Silk Road”. It was in 2013 that then-China President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) during the opening of the People’s Congress China. Talking about the Chinese investments that have caught global attention, China poured in billions of dollars to make the Silk Road the map for world prosperity. The key component of the ambitious project is the construction of the railway. Indeed, once it is completed, progress will roll continuously and provide financial stability in many countries.

Cambodia wants to work, but not in Cambodia. Chinese people take work, but bring their people. Cambodian people have to flee to find work in Thailand. Other occupations, the law protects only Thai people, and the poor from Cambodia will come to beg on the overpass across the road. When they earn a lot of money, they take the money back to the country. But it's against Thai law. Do not come to beg. Because the government already has an agency to help these people and every company in Thailand. Having to accept three people with disabilities per company, they are all efficient and able to work in the office. And many more that we have laws that foreigners cannot work in Thailand.

Having heard the speaking about China doing in Cambodia. He said China developed Cambodia by building infrastructure, factories, hundreds of casinos. However, most jobs were taken by Chinese. They said Chinese patronise Chinese restaurants, and shops nothing goes to local. Yes! Cambodia is mordenized but locals still not benefited but it only only benefits the Chinese. So, what do you think?

Teofilo L Who exactly are these greedy Americans and Anglo Saxons that you describe? And what exactly are they doing that is so bad? The usual complaint is that they are not doing enough, so I’d be interested to get your info. In terms of foreign companies: There are small scale western miners there but the larger ones are Chinese, Japanese and Indian. The garment manufacturers are largely Chinese and Korean. The builders are predominantly Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese. The Thais have massive agribusinesses, telecoms are largely local or Asian investors, cars are primarily Japanese and Korean. Most of the banks are Asian and breweries are mainly Asian. ANZ recently sold their share of ANZRoyal bank to Japanese, after earlier pulling out of a rubber plantation investment that had forcibly moved people off their land. Most of the land and forest concessions are held by Chinese, Malaysian and other Asian. So what is the basis of your post? You want to keep the bad westerners out? They haven’t got a snowballs chance in hell in Cambodia and everyone knows it. There are many things that stink about Cambodia but by far the smelliest is its own leadership.

I agree with Dr. Surachai. In Thailand the money would have better been used to improve the existing railway and buy new trains then build a new high speed railway. On the other hand I welcome China’s economical goals. While The US cares only for its own benefit and is focused on creating military conflicts, China is working on something that helps ensure peace and corporation between nations.

It's reported that Thailand's economy is on the downhill, it's not like it doesn't grow up, more like grow up at slower speed. Learning Chinese is a pretty normal thing to do even around the world but teaching about one belt one road, 33:45 "want to give the positive view" on the project, even teaching Chinese politics is a quite bold move. I'm not sure if it's a nationalism thing but in my country (Vietnam), we've barely been taught about other countries' modern politics and not to mention any sensitive topic like one belt one road. I can clearly see that the government tries its best not to receive too much from China (it's still hard but at some points still acceptable). Thailand is strong and smart, I think they try to adapt and get prepared. But getting too involved with another country (especially China) is never a sustainable move. For Cambodia, it's hard to judge if they are right or wrong. Personally, I find it risky but I think time will answer.

Who will benifit more from the investments? 3. How did local people feel when the westerners came first and turned the town full of hoetels and western food eateries? Why Chinese construcions make people feel like staying in a foreign country, but English didn't? It seems that the whole vidoe is blaming Chinese money & buyers, but rememeber Chinese can't travel with just a passport as easy as people from other countries.
