Tribal warfare remains a traditional part of life in Papua New Guinea's highlands but the introduction of high-powered weapons has made local conflicts much deadlier.
Six months after violence flared during the nation's election, thousands of villagers are still too scared to return home. This report from PNG correspondent Natalie Whiting. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5 Read more here: ab.co/3npUo70

I'm really impressed of how the villager spoke very fluently during the interview. The interviewee should questioned him more so that he can share light on what has been the cause factor to the trible war in that part of our beautiful country. I'm very sorry for their losses.

I am not from ENGA but I love ENGA. I think ENGA people are generally very hospitable, loving and caring but there are two sides to a coin and Enga's can be very protective over what is there's and will fight for it regardless. We must all change from the ways of our ancestors. We have a common language and just need to find better ways to resolve our issues. God bless PNG. P.S...those commenting negatively here can go make your own videos and upload. The ABC report was focused on TRIBAL FIGHTS/VIOLENCE. More media will come after our FOREIGN MINISTER called us USELESS PEOPLE and PRIMITIVE ANIMALS.

Paul Kurai, thank you for taking the initiative to step in to mediate and stop this senseless killing that the world is seeing. As an Engan and Papua New Guiean, such horrific killings have never been seen in the history of Enga and for that matter in Papua New Guinea. It is the first time such a senseless mudering of brother's and father's, uncles have lost their lives. I feel sorry for the Poor So Called Leaders, the Governor, the member for Koipaim and the member for Wapenamanda. They have gone into hidding and have sacrifficed other people's live for their own self fish ideologies as Members. They should strep down in shame! They show they are not good leaders and idf they cant quell a village fight, what can they in the country? Nothing and I call upom them to step down as members of parliament and let the Wapenamand or Enga people have no representative in Parliament for the durration of these time remianing. That is the most senseable thing to do! The three Parloiaments must step down!

Rubbish, Tribal warfare has been endemic in much of PNG forever. The coming of Europeans stifled it a lot, but it continues. Guns have always been there,(since the Aussies in particular entered the scene) but now drug and arms smugglers are more prevalent in the region. As for being a tourist region...no...Malaria is rife, as are many other tropical diseases, infrastructure is non existent, many of the population are one generation away from the stone age, most are tribal people, Law and order is fragile, the state is corrupt...no. Please research at least a little before posting.

Australia needs to take an active role in this to assist the government to bring stability to the region, before other parties move (sounds like they maybe already there) in and it becomes a power struggle, with the local groups and government. Dont sit on your hands Aust, this is where our gov needs to really be invloved...to assist. Other countries would have there eye on the resource-rich country, for there own outcomes and this maybe the start of that push with offerings to he different groups to start the ball rolling..

Don't you realise that PNG is a sovereign country? Australia can't do anything till PNG changes its constitution to allow it and officially asks for specific help. There are a few federal police stationed in Port Moresby with permission, but they can't interfere legally in another country's internal issues like the Highlands tribal fighting. It's no different to Australians wanting to stop the gun killings, suicides and massacres in the United States, 31,500 by 24th September 2023, since it's a far more murderous, barbaric and backward country than PNG. Think about it.
