What about "sound"? In geography, a sound is a large sea or ocean inlet larger than a bay, deeper than a bight, and wider than a fjord; or a narrow sea or ocean channel between two bodies of land (see also strait). An example: the Cockburn Sound is an inlet of the Indian Ocean on the coast of Western Australia.

So this is basically another “what are continents?” situation where we don’t know entirely know what these geographical features are and just ignore what we made.And it’s an awful way to divide a section of land or water so we can more easily understand it

One small correction, the earth isn't 70% water. The earths surface is covered 70% by water. But, water is only 0.02% of the earths total mass, most of it is rock.

Australia is not bordered by the Southern Ocean even tho' , for some unknown reason Australians are told that it is. Officially the Southern Ocean begins around 66 degrees south while Australia only reaches about 47 degrees south. The Ocean which lies south of W.A, S.A. and to the eastern most point of Victoria is the Indian Ocean.

The Southern Ocean is not recognised by all nations. The Ocean's on the southern coast of Australia are actually the Indian and the Pacific. Please exercise due diligence with your reporting. You are starting to slip ABC.
@abcnewsaustralia6 жыл бұрын
Hey Wayne! Thanks for your comment. The Australian Hydrographic Service - the Commonwealth Government agency responsible for the publication and distribution of nautical charts and other information required for the safety of ships navigating in Australian waters - does actually recognise the Southern Ocean, so that's the ruling we've gone with for this video. www.hydro.gov.au/factsheets/WFS_Names_and_Limits_of_Oceans_and_Seas_Around_Australia.pdf
@wmahomet6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply. But just because a government department from our country recognises something, It does not make it fact to the rest of the world. Borders and boundaries are a complex topic, so please do not simplify based on our own bias. Cheers.
@afh76896 жыл бұрын
Wayne Mahomet Most countries as well as the International Hydrographic Organization recognize the Southern Ocean. The only controversy is the exact northern boundary of it.
@colormesarge6 жыл бұрын
Wayne Mahomet Just because other countries ignore it doesn't mean it's wrong. I wasn't taught about the Southern Ocean in the USA but they neglect to teach us a lot of stuff in this country; very nationalistic.
@wmahomet6 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Its the boundary that I am talking about. Yes the southern ocean does exist, and internationally it is recognised. But for accurate reporting you must show the discrepancies between different nations determinations of the actual boundaries. Look I love the ABC, but they must continue to keep the highest levels of media reporting. Else they will lose the respect they have earned over the many years. Cheers for your comment.
