I didn't realize schoolhouse rock was trying to teach me alternate bases so early on. I certainly never learned this in school, and only got a taste of it when a friend attampted to explain it in University.

@@tnhl77 Our number system is base 10, meaning that each digit represents a power of 10. Early humans likely chose such a system because we have 10 fingers. For example, the number 486 in base 10 means, 4×10^2 + 8×10^1 + 6x10^0. The song proposed a base 12 counting system, meaning that each digit represents a power of 12. This means that 486 in base 12 would mean 4×12^2 + 8x12^1 + 6×12^0. As a result of this, adding and extra 0 to the end of the number eg. 10 -> 100 would not multiply the number by 10, but instead by 12. The most common non base 10 counting system used by humans is base 2, usually called binary. This means that there are only 2 digits, 1 and 0. Binary has applications in computing, as it is currently only practical for computers to represent values as a series of "on" or "off" states, corresponding to 1 and 0 respectively.

@@lukeh5521 Dude, all you had to do was say, since we have 10 fingers, we count by tens, if we had 12 fingers we'd count by 12s.

I love this song. But I sometimes wish it wasn't about numbers. Like... I feel like it has some potential, you know?

I always loved this tune. The video was freaky, but I suffered for the sake of hearing this song again.

I think they bit off more than they could chew with this one. Trying to explain the concept of base 12 in a special about multiplication was more than my child mind could handle.

Nah man, that's literally the whole point. They start by showing the goblin, a strange base-12 system, and play ominous music. But then they switch to 10s and things instantly get light hearted and colorful. They aren't teaching base-12, they are trying to contrast weird Greek symbols with how much easier it is to just do 12, 24, 36... Most kids get confused at the first part, but enjoy the 10s part. Mission accomplished.

I kinda wanna make a Dnd race/monster named "Little (12) Toes" now. Given how he's depicted... Probably a Spell jammer variant/relation of the Sasquatch/Bigfoot.
