Known by many names, Ambu bag, Air viva, Laedel Bag or self inflating ventilating bag, it is an essential piece of anaesthesia equipment.
As it doesn't require an oxygen source, it can be used to ventilate patients in many different contexts - in hospital in critical care and non critical care settings as well as in the field, outside hospital.
In the operating theatre, its simplicity is a tremendous advantage in the instance the complex anaesthesia machine fails. The Ambu bag can perform adequate ventilation and oxygenation to keep a patient alive in the most disastrous on machine failure situations.
