ABCs of Anaesthesia

Күн бұрын

Known by many names, Ambu bag, Air viva, Laedel Bag or self inflating ventilating bag, it is an essential piece of anaesthesia equipment.
As it doesn't require an oxygen source, it can be used to ventilate patients in many different contexts - in hospital in critical care and non critical care settings as well as in the field, outside hospital.
In the operating theatre, its simplicity is a tremendous advantage in the instance the complex anaesthesia machine fails. The Ambu bag can perform adequate ventilation and oxygenation to keep a patient alive in the most disastrous on machine failure situations.

Nice video, I am an anaesthetic resident in Nigeria, one of the issues of switching to the AMBU bag is that u are no longer able to maintain anaesthesia with an inhalational agent

If your anesthesia machine is still somewhat operational, you can connect your ambubag's O2 line to the machine's auxilliary circuit gas outlet (ACGO in GE/Datex Ohmeda machines) using the piece of plastic junction that comes with endotracheal tubes and still make use of inhalational agent in your gas mixture, maintaining anesthesia even with manual ventilation. You can also use this outlet and provide non-noxious inhalational anesthetics like sevoflurane over simple face masks, non-invasively. Useful for sedation during long duration operations with continuous spinal epidural or continuous spinal anesthesia, if you want your patient to just have a cosy and comfortable nap instead of enduring the whole ordeal.

Regarding my last comment, I am obviously not recommending or suggesting anyone do what I mentioned. These are simply my practices and I'm just outlining what I occasionally offer to patients that I deem fit. Don't just assume everything works for everyone. Never the case. Use your own judgement.

This problem happened to me 3 days ago. Induced a morbidly obese patients and could not use the machine! (Bad CO2 absorber) That little device is great and should always confirm it's in the room before induction

Just turn the flow up high enough to washout the CO2 and you dont need the absorber, and you still get to use your inhalational agent.

Why is this being taught on KZbin and not in anesthesia residency? This is scary

I don't mean to be snarky, but if this isn't taught day-one in your institution, either pack up and look for another place, or simply be the light in the dark and do teach this to others in your institution.
