Overhauling an Old Story! | Concept Corner: HEARTLESS #1

It’s been a hot minute, but it’s finally speedpaint time again!
This week I’m delving into my old notebooks and exploring one of my all-time favorite story ideas in a new segment that I’m tentatively calling; “Concept Corner”!
I’ve been wanting to make a series like this for ~a g e s~ where I could really go all-in and tell y’all a lil’ bit about the myriad of characters I made as a kid, and give them a fresh coat of paint in the process - so I really hope you enjoy this installment!

Howdy y’all, thanks for stopping by! \(^^)/ This ended up being a real big video -- I hope y’all enjoyed it! It feels like forever since the last time I worked on a speedpaint, so it was nice to get back into that familiar editing rhythm again. It was also a ton of fun to play around with this new format! Their redesigns as well as personality/story changes are so cool and amazing!!! Idea for Eira rejecting his magic: Perhaps the reason the kingdom is covered in snow is because of magic. Like, some magical accident or an evil wizard. Because Eira's magic is focused on ice and snow, he has the same type of magic that caused this eternal winter which is why he's so ashamed of it. And if an evil wizard is responsible for the winter, maybe Eira is one of their descendants.

This might be able to tie in with the fact that he was a street punk in the past. Maybe he disagreed with his family about this, and was either disowned or ran away from his family on his own. And he just doesn’t wanna be like his family/ancestor so that’s why he’s so unaccepting of his own magic.

I relate to that but the funny thing is one of the main characters from my current project is THE first gay character I've ever made (basically I was raised homophobic and while I started to grow to be more accepting I randomly went "hm how about make a gay character for once?" and so I did and he's one of my favorite characters I've ever made to this day)

I did this same thing to a story i came up with when I was in 4th grade 😅. Specificly a character now named Seth who is gender fluid now. But before, they were some evil girl named Alex who "pretended to be a guy/was a tomboy". At the time, she also got smooched a la sleeping beauty by the protagonist who... was... named... Luna... how oRiGiNaL 😂 (her name is Artemis now, so at least a little less on the nose)

man the fact heartless is dead is so morbid and sad if you think about it. he possibly has a family who lost their son and they have no idea he’s walking around undead and just fine and he can’t even remember who his family is if he has one at all. he can’t remember who he is either. I can’t even imagine the inner turmoil heartless must have some nights as he wonders who he was before he was dead and what things could have been like if he never did die. he would probably try with everything he has [maybe literally] to remember but he can’t and i can’t imagine how much it would crush him to not even remember a scrap of his old name. yet he powers on in spite of it and doesn’t let it hold himself back from going on the search and being as happy as he can. the image of heartless looking in the mirror and not even recognizing his own face is so incredibly sad to me. he is by far my favorite but these batch of characters and the villains have all won my heart equally and i can’t love one more than the others. i hope heartless finds who he is but doesn’t let it clash with how he is now and it joins together and he becomes a whole new person full of love and freedom of who he is. all with his friends alongside him the whole time GOD I LOVE THIS STORY so sorry if this was messy 😅 and have a lovely night or day🩷

God, I can just see it. Eira, standing near defeated by the king's captor, his sword knocked out of his hand, Heartless and the others knocked out. The bad guy taunts Eira, takes his time. He draws out his blade and presses it to the king's throat. Asks Eira: "What are you gonna do about it?" BAM! Dagger goes flying, we get a look at the villain's shocked face before a full-page spread of Eira, standing before his friend, newly created ice sword raised high, the first time he's ever done so. The power of (possibly more than) friendship, baybeeee~!

(Oh my goodness, I can't help but add detail to this - ) No. No, no, no, repeats in his head, seeing the blade get closer and closer to his king's throat. He doesn't have time to get to his sword. The outsiders are defeated, scattered across the floor behind him. Even if he ran, he wouldn't get there in time. This man, this insolent, disgusting invader, knows it. It's in his eyes - triumphant and gleaming, sickly victorious. Like every gang member on the streets that hurt people, just because they could. He would hate it, but he can't think through his horror. Not him, he can't help but think. Time has slowed but every millimeter that dagger crawls forward is too fast. Please, not him. *CRACK.* His vision whites, and then it's back to normal, except it's too dim, where is his king, where is - ? Please, he thinks again, and his tears freeze on his cheeks. His eyes have adjusted. The windows have been frosted over, ice covering the stone of the floor and walls in a blast pattern, deadly and explosive. Spikes rise, sharp and fatal. His king's breath comes out to add to the white of the room in little puffs. There is blood on the side of his face, but he is alive. Snowflakes grow out from dust, water forming crystals on specks of dirt and falling when they become too heavy. *Not him,* he had thought, and ice had formed from him, a sick imitation of shaping snow. Eira knows he is just as filthy as the dust in the center of snowflakes, but for now, with his king alive, he is too relieved to think about that.

The way I was thinking, “ah, that talk of diversity was very important and nice. Just wish there would be a black girl in this line up.” AND THEN YOU DREW RIVER DIAL’S HAIR. As a black female artist who is weary of how the world views people like me-especially on social media where people can be exceptionally cruel and obtuse-my heart SOARED seeing her redesign!! (And green is my fave color! 💚) I always love your vids, especially redesigns. It always motivates me to draw and your voice is so comforting. (Not to mention, I could watch you draw hands all day, I have yet to really nail that in my art @_@). I love every single one of your characters, pls pls pls make more content of them! Sophia Young (Apologies in advance for the word dump lmao) I’m not an animator, so my experience/advice is limited. BUT! I’d suggest looking up African American/Black protective hairstyles and see how the hair moves and behaves! You can also look up tutorials online on how to draw such styles (I learned so much from twitter! Black creatives there are very organized!) I also tend to binge “How to Braid” vids because I’m just learning myself. Such protective styles that I know of (anyone pls correct me if I’m wrong) are TWISTS (two strands “braiding.” It kind of looks like rope) , FLAT TWISTS (braided into natural hair), SENEGALESE TWISTS (weave/feed in extensions for longer twists), BOX BRAIDS (three strand braiding with weave/feed in extensions), and CORNROWS (natural hair braided into the scalp), etc. The weave/feed in extensions can be any color! From matching the natural hair to any color you wish! An Afro/kinky curly hair would most likely be easiest to draw/animate because you can shorthand with puffy hair with a few strands but don’t be shy to experiment! Protective hairstyles are versatile! Just don’t try to change up the hair styles from day to day because a number of these are meant to stay in for a while i.e. box braids. Learning the maintenance it takes for black hair is helpful too. Again, sorry for the word dump but one last tip would be to follow a lot of black creatives who specialize/show a lot of hair diversity! It takes lots of research but I hope the key words of protective styles I shared will help you on the journey! I’m still learning everyday 🤗

@Sophia Young I think having consistent hair will be no problem for your character because we tend to keep protective styles in for longer periods of time like OP mentioned, simplifying black hair can actually be really fun! Locs like in this video are an option, cornrows too, or even playing with having her hair slicked up into a puff or two afro puffs could be something simple and iconic. ( oh and edges r really fun to draw BHSDJ )

As a twin watching this, my first thought upon learning Dopple's story was the angst opportunities they could have. Like the anxiety side having an issue of wanting to be treated better, given a separate name, or even just treated as something separate. He's been separate from the original boy since they were small children and it just feels like something that would come from a situation like this. They started the same and my brain really wants to poke at the fact that they're separate now. There's also the really messed up option of them figuring out how to put Dopple back together and having to make that choice. Lose the basically brother you made when you were a kid and get to be whole again, or stay the way you are right now. Like dude, the angst possibilities with those two it so strong! Anyway, this story sounds super cool and if you ever make it into a full-on thing, I'd love to see it! Hope you have a nice rest of your day! :DD

You know, because Eira has snow/ice powers, what if his skin was really cold? He doesn't mind the cold (for obvious reasons), but what if all people that have magic that has something to do with cold had this? It got me thinking: What if, the group went somewhere really hot, and Flint (being Flint) was struggling. So he just walks over to Eira and just hugs him. This of course makes our frosty boy VERY uncomfortable, but he just sighs and give Flint a pat on the back. Another idea I had for a story arch or what not, is that for reasons, Alchemy disguises themselves as a bad guy, and infiltrates their base. During this time, the rest of the group is stressed and panicking, and have to fight the urge to go in there and save them. It would be a cool opportunity to show how much they care about each other, even if they don't show it all the time. A simple thought for angst (because that's what I'm good at), is that one day, Heartless uses too much power, and ends up beginning to drain River's energy, causing her to become unconscious. She's only knocked out for a few days, and everyone assures him that she's fine. But after that, Heartless becomes afraid of his own abilities. He only uses a small percent of his powers, and becomes distant, afraid he'll hurt his friends again. And my closing thought: What if, one time while they were visiting a town for a job, they meet a girl, and she takes a liking to Eira. Now, Eira being Eira, he freezes (no pun intended), and just stands their awkwardly. I'm thinking too much about a story that isn't even mine again.

It would be really interesting if in the story, Eira gets his ice sword when he's in the midst of a fight with someone much stronger than himself, and the sword he's using gets shattered. I think it could be kinda cool if River's ability to help others with her magic but not herself also played into her as a person, like if she sometimes provides a listening ear for the rest of the team when they're feeling down but is terrible at vocalizing her own problems. That being said, Alchemy is also 100% the group therapist.

he is having a battle, he needs more strength, and in a final moment he finds himself using more power than he remembers having, he turns around to cheer at his other half exclaiming something like “i did it!” and “did you see that halfie?!” only to realize that there’s a mask on the floor with a note saying “you did great, glad i could help” and while the other characters are silent and he is crying we can hear in the background the weak half being like “i’m glad i could help, i’m gonna miss you all, please, continue the fight without me” there, there’s the angst you wanted xoxo

Doppel is by far my favorite, mainly because of his design and powers are so interesting. Also a story popped up in my head hearing about him. That doppel slowly starting to like his "twin" and the "twin" slowly finding a place in the world and considering himself to not be just a copy, and for that to all end because a villain kills the "twin". Having Doppel watch it happen and feel all his power coming back only to fucking rage and explode with angry and killing/defeating the villain, would both be heart-breaking and amazing. Still the design's are really cool and super unique. ^^

Some thoghts/ideas on Doppel: 1-. The "Core" doppel is actually the shy one, the bold one is the product of the spell 2-. They may fuse back some day, but since they've spent so much time appart they have developed distinct souls, so they cannot remain for long in this fused state 3-. Doppel actually comes from a family with a long line of twins, wether he actually has or had a twin or not is up to debate (imagine alchemy changes to imitate Doppel for a mission but they find Doppel's actual lost twin and things just go feral). 4-. He's a good getaway driver, not because he's actually good, but because he can just flip the car around on a blink, so he crashes a lot less than he should. 5-. He's a cryptid, and not like "weird guy" cryptid, a real one, like big-foot, or mothman. 6-. Bold Doppel has already dated a lot, but Shy doppel just runs into the woods when things get too heated for him, this point links to point 5.

I like the thought of Eira being in love with the king, maybe possibly that could be the reason why Eira rejects his magic? the king (being the ruler of a anti-magic country) could be against magic and although he knows Eria is magic, he demeans Eria’s magic usage by saying “you aren’t like those wizards” or “you’re different” causing Eria to sort of repress his magic bc 1) he’s in love with the king but also 2) he’s grown up with the view of being magical as something bad but only him being the exception of this stereotype. The thought of rejecting a part of yourself for the sake of someone else could be very relatable and angst worthy. i think it would be really nice to see Alchemy teach Eira the importance of self-love and not sacrificing a piece of yourself just bc you want someone else to be happy. also i think it could reflect Eira being a closeted gay? possibly reflecting the inner torment of being a young kid in love with someone you were taught you shouldn’t love bc of their gender and gradually hiding and rejecting that part of you just like Eria with his magic? idk but i think that would be really nice but i’m also just a glutton for angst and one-sided love lol :]]
