I just bought a 'Kaleidoscope' at a nursery/garden center in Sanford, NC, last weekend (Big Bloomers). I am a big fan of abelias, having had 'Rose Creek' line the walkway from my porch to the sidewalk at a previous home. It is a wnderful, hardy plant.

Damn that's a nice presentation. I planted one in a pot so I can feast my eyes all the time, but just got more to plant in front of a blue evergreen. I'm located below a mountain though where it gets down to -20. As far as I'm reading it can survive but dies back to ground. I have three to plant. How close do you recommend I should plant them?

The general planting distance would be about 3 feet apart, but if space isn't an issue and you wanted to see each individual plant, you could increase this put them in a little wider (say 4') apart. If you are concerned about dieback after a cold, persistent winter without much snow, you could employ a little bit of extra insurance by putting down an layer of mulch in late Autumn. This will help to protect the crown, so that if you ever got a really sharp cold period the crown should be protected, so that new growth would regrow back out again in spring.

Beautiful plant🪴❤️ What is the difference between Abelia Kaleidoscope and Abelia Sunshine daydream? from🇬🇧
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 жыл бұрын
Abelia Sunshine Daydream is Dutch selection with a different golden variegation that doesn't take on the gorgeous orange and amber shades in cold weather. Here's a link to a short video that we filmed in our shipping yard just before we sent it to one of our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ It will let you see what it looks like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3LOXn-PhtSAiJI

Greetings to you....will they grow from cuttings? If they do - what would be this best way to accomplish this?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 жыл бұрын
They can be propagated from cuttings but I hasten to add that this is a Plant Patented selection (Abelia grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope' PP#16,988) and therefore it is not permissible to root cuttings unless you have a license from the introducer/breeder to do so.

Hi can you keep.these in a container year round?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 жыл бұрын
That's how we grow them, ours are all in pots and they do very well. You just have to protect the vulnerable roots during the winter time by bring them into an unheated basement, garage etc.

How do you trim?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 4 ай бұрын
Now in early spring is great time to prune them. They sprout well from both old and and new growth, so if you have to take them back hard you can do that, but its best to trim them regularly and commence doing that even when they are young plants. That way you'll be able to keep them shapely and colorful. We've noted your inquiry and will ask David to see if he can show you in more detail he he likes to trim them - so stay tuned. BTW, have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find out about the information as well. And, now that we are entering the main planting season (spring through late Fall) try to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there will be fresh shipments arriving weekly.

Are the flowers fragrant?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Abelias belong to the honeysuckle family. But the fragrance is not as strong as this suggests, and as I am sure you will appreciate from the pictures it is really grown for the wonderful, ever changing and highly decorative foliage effects.

Does this flower really smell or no smell at all..??
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 жыл бұрын
If you "sniff" hard enough you will probably pick up a slight fragrance, but this it is not pronounced and is over shadowed by the eye-popping colorful foliage effects. So, if you are looking for fragrance - scroll and search through this channel or visit one of the garden centers in our region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ that carry our plants and you'll be able to find other alternatives that will bring you garden alive with lots of delightful wafting aromas.
